- This is about how parasites attack and feast on over-pampered koi fish. People love their koi carp so much but quite often, people go too far and provide an unnatural environment where koi cannot naturally fend off the common parasite.
It's natural for fish to have parasites, healthy fish have no problem fending them off. If it doesn't happen naturally in the wild, then don't do it in your pond.

Finally someone who talks sense! We visit ponds all over the southwest to help people with their ponds. Why oh why are people so determined to have empty volumes of water for their koi. Guess which ponds we DON’T have to visit very often - those that have a more natural look, with plants, bog filters, places to hide and shade….
I visited a customer recently who had an empty prison cell for their koi. 2 x 100lpm air pumps, no hiding places, no plants. £6k worth of filtration. Permanent levels of Nitrate. Koi really struggling with their immune systems.

Hi, roughly how many 5/6” goldfish could I safely get for my 1,500 gallon pond, 1’6” to 3’6” deep. I have get koi & what you say makes total sense! Great educational video 👍👍👍
This might be a long shot but I recently discovered the channel and I appreciate the straightforward information provided. I have a koi that is having issues with what appears to be a bacterial infection. Red fins and occasional ulcers. It acts normal and is my most aggressive eater. My water parameters are spot on and I'm feeding high quality food. All my research says to quarantine the fish and treat it with chemicals. The pond is 4 ft deep and around 9000 gallons so catching it will probably be a very stressful ordeal. I don't want to make the issue worse. Might you have any suggestions for a treatment that I can do in pond or should I be focusing on boosting the fishes immune system and hoping it clears up on its own? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with relatively low stocking and plant filtration helping to keep koi healthy, but I have the "luxury" of having plenty of land so built myself a 40 square meter pond with an extra 20 square meters of wetland filtration stuffed with 6 cubic meters of pea gravel and all kind of plants. With two big settlement tanks and fencing all round the pond takes up 78 square meters (840 square feet), not everyone has that much real estate in their back garden to dedicate to fish. So you get small but deep ponds with no plants but overstocked with koi😢
Thnx for the comment. Lots of people have large and small gardens with large or small ponds. We are just saying to utilise plants as much as possible

I really find your videos very interesting and more often the complete opposite to other videos saying cover up, keep them at a certain temp all year.
What you say makes total sense and takes the pressure off the likes of me wanting to learn what is best.
What I would really find helpful is that I have the dreaded box of water.
What I want to do is introduce plants and make my pond more koi friendly rather than a cube of water with windows in.
Can you do a video please in how I can turn my man made box of water into something that is more adaptive as in the wild.
I have a 1.4m depth pond and how can I get plants etc that the fish can swim amongst etc.

Water lettice is fabulous. I bought a tiny amount last year and it seemed to double in size every day. I never needed to change the water as my nitrates were always zero. When I was on holiday my pump broke. I came home to only 6 inches of water completely covered in water lettice. The fish were healthy and again zero nitrates. I just topped the pond back up with chlorine free water.
Next year water lettice will be my first plant buy. 😊

@@bigbri59 I didnt do no. But I don't have Koi. I have goldfish and fancy goldfish. But I did give some to my friend who has Koi and it wasn't all eaten by the Koi. It seems to grow so fast that the fish can't eat all of it. Good luck for next year.

Great video. I am one of the mugs who bought the pressure pipe for my new Eazypod filter. In my defence, I don't use a heater and don't cover my pond. In fact, since I'm keeping my filter running all the way through as I usually do, I can turn off my airstones can't I ?
Yes definitely when the water temps drops should be fine, always keep an eye on things but it should be fine
Great video! My plants have helped so much in keeping my water clean and my koi have left my plants alone because I also have gravel and stones in my pond. They don’t focus on my plants. I also have plants in my intake bay and the waterfall that also filters the water. ❤

Some shops are selling koi very cheaply this time of year to move end of season stock on.
Hi mate any time of year they are hard as nails, so the usual acclimatise. We often move fish in winter they don’t mind it at all cheers just don’t overstock and feed the usual rules really

Most plants but you really want to plant them properly or use pots which are almost as deep as the shelf so the fish can’t actually get into the soil, we have a vid on potting plants on the channel
Putting mine together as we speak, I saw the video on rocks and gravel but was wondering about other substrate. I am putting in plants but what about sand? Do you recommend a substrate?
Depends on amount of fish and size of pond. Low stocked ponds will probably require some kind of soil substrate in the plant pots. But medium to high stocked ponds you could probably get away with just using stones (pea shingle) there will be enough nutrients in the water. Even lily's do well in stocked ponds with just stones. I'd stay away from sand personally especially if you have carp. In a week it won't be in the pots but spread over the whole bottom lol
Compared to a princess koi, my fish are born and bred council estate and I dont get any problems with disease etc.

Waste of time and money, anything sterile is not a good option. The more you nature do its thing the better for the pond and less work/money for you

What do you think of drum filters ??
They are expensive but they do filter small particles, the do need maintenance like all filters and they do use a lot of pond water when cleaning which is something that I think could do with changing, so your levels are always draining
How can I introduce plants in a pond which has no shelves? Or protect plants from the fish if placed on the bottom? Anyone able to advise? Thanks

Cheers no probs keep stocks and feeding down and correct filters ammonia will be a thing of the past
