I have some thoughts on the subject. Returning my cart after I shop, holding the door for a stranger, helping the neighbor with their shopping, thanking folks who serve the public- I don't do these things because I'm a saint or to fulfill a social contract. I do them for myself. For my own wellbeing and peace of mind. I practice gratitude, and I make myself of service to others whenever I can because when I don't, I'm doing a disservice to myself. My actions and my thoughts are my own. It's not that I'm naive or that I'm blind to the state of decay. I do it _because_ shit is this way, not in spite of it. I don't consider myself above anyone, but I won't lower myself with cynicism and self-pity. And I won't allow an increasingly nihilistic culture to dictate how I choose to live my life. If this sounds self-righteous or self-aggrandizing, I want to reiterate that I'm not talking about healing the blind here or teaching orphans to read in Calcutta. It's just a little courtesy to help keep my head on straight and express my gratitude. And I know for certain there's plenty of folks out here just like me. Millions.

You can see the 'sentimental' versus 'social contract' playing out on the UK train system at the moment, where the old paradigm where you would get on a train, speak to a (generally friendly) guard and buy a ticket there has been forcibly exchanged for mechanisation through being forced to buy tickets from machines at stations (if they work) and threats of fines if you even dare to set foot on a train without a ticket. The trains are still patrolled, but instead of guards willing to sell tickets it is now by 'fine enforcement officers' ready to hand out punishments for breaking the 'social contract' in its bluntest and most inhuman terms.

@@thejustifier5566 Not really. Citizenship in the ancient world (pre- Caracalla of course) was very different and worth a lot more due to it's exclusionary nature.
In the social contract, there is substantially less one needs to accomplish in order to become a full, accepted member of that society.
Additionally, it is not purely a legal concept we're talking about here, but moreso a philosophical one - an effort to describe the natures of various societies, rather than a legalistic description of citizenship and belonging.

they are closely related to it but not fatalistically tied to it. the republicans tried really hard to push the idea of a singular american tribe, the patriotic american filled with the necessary jingoism to overshadow close sentimental ethnic differences and conjoin these disparate tribes into one singular american identity.
Almost everyone else was willing to play into the game except for one tribe, blacks, and their enablers, the democrats.
I honestly believe that if blacks weren't part of the U.S, the Nation would be better even if it was filled with all manner of other tribes that are entirely different from each other, like the different european tribes, the different tribes of the arabian maghreb, the different asians tribes, and even the different subsaharan tribes, because you can clearly see that these groups are atleast willing to play into the game of assimilation to the greater american culture. They have no issue that the greater american culture, in its core, is born from protestant anglo saxon behaviors and ideals, the only group that does have a massive issue with this is the black american tribe.
I'm honestly not sure why that is, historical pains can be an explanation for it but they were still following the mantra in the early days of their emancipation by the republicans who wished to extend the social contract to the black american tribe, I guess the republicans didn't expect they would be betrayed by these people so eagerly.

If one excludes the counties in the five metro areas with the worst homicide rates from the American statistics - St. Louis, D. C., Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia - it used to be New Orleans but Philadelphia got worse - America is on average as safe as Spain or Italy. I would hazard a guess that were crime broken down by race within that skewed sample of American counties, black crime rates would not be anything near as disproportionately high.

You have to actively hate Trump and Boris or there’s something wrong with you. Having even just a couple of nominally ‘right wing’ views is not an acceptable nuance. He just told me last night that ‘I’ve changed since we met’ and if he’d known what a ‘right wing bigot’ I was when we’d met we wouldn’t have got together. He bases this on the fact I
    a. Occasionally watch GB News, b. voted Tory in 2019 (for the only time in my life)
    c. defend Brexit even though I voted Remain.
He complains about ‘my’ Tory government and ‘my’ Brexit as if he knows what he’s talking about when he has ZERO knowledge, so certain is he that ‘right wing’ = ‘bad’ and Brexit = ‘bad’.
Yet he also doesn’t think illegal migrants should be allowed to stay in the country …. And he doesn’t think transwomen are women- so technically speaking isn’t he now just a horrid right wing bigot too?? I think our relationship may be coming to an end because I honestly am finding it harder to even have a conversation with him about anything. It’s very sad.

Be part of a culture or multiple culture but maintain your individuality above all else. We need to build a better country together as individuals who defend our rights and the rights of those around us. There also needs to be at least some patriotism to hold people together.

I really disagree with the idea that my country is in any way a "Social Contract" society, or that our nation doesn't have any sort of tribal or ethnic roots.
We fought because wanted our rights as ENGLISHMEN to be respected, we didn't just want to be a tool for our brothers in the British Isles to grow rich from through exploitation. This evolved into a war of independence. You will see that the ones most loyal to Britain, that would be New England, were the ones to put the most effort into the war; because we felt violated.
Upon independence our immigration was almost entirely from Northwestern Europe until the late 1800s when a bunch of Italians and undesirables fleeing the pogroms in the Russian Empire came. There exists a true and authentic American people; whose descent primarily comes through the British Isles.

As you can see, one enables the other thus is heavily linked with one another. The (justifiable imo) demographic panic that is repeatedly put on this channel doesn't use the groupings of political values or traditions but that of obvious racial/ethnic makeup as the point of contention so I would say it's the former. Obviously the refusal to assimilate is the consequence of too much immigration, but the data, points, and charts that are brought up on this channel use the census results of native english/anglos to invaders, not british values to whatever the hell else.
There's no need to be a pedant about it, there's just a jarring and inconsistent left-right pull in the messaging of the ills facing the west (or the UK in relation to the example given above) on the channel, which makes me think that theres either a fear of leftist labeling which makes them cowards at best or a discovery of an easy monthly check from the fears of conservative westerners while not caring about the issues themselves through the cognitive dissonance on display in their own videos (like Tim Pool) making them dishonest grifters at worst.
