- The BERNINA song, sung by the men's choir "Frohsinn" Steckborn, was released by BERNINA on shellac disc in 1937. The company was celebrating the production of the 20,000th BERNINA sewing machine, five years after production start in 1932. The lyrics refer to Piz Bernina, the highest peak in the Eastern Alps and the namesake of the first household sewing machine made in the Steckborn factory. Fritz Gegauf, son of the company founder, chose the name to symbolise the robustness and excellence of Swiss engineering. Previously, the company had manufactured hemstitch sewing machines for commercial and industrial use. The global economic crisis, the decline of the textile industry in Europe and trade barriers due to high import duties abroad threatened this business model. The change in strategy with the development and production of machine for domestic use and a strong focus on the Swiss market brought about a turnaround and helped the company to a strong upswing. Over the decades, the model name developed into a brand that is now recognised around the world for its outstanding quality.
