- Updated 12/27/17 - I've been asked this a few times so I want to update those reading this. The repair has been a success the last few months staying dry in Florida rains. YES!
This video is to help those with Infiniti G series sedan passenger sunroof drain leaks or with water leaks of unknown origin on the passenger side. It goes through repair steps and symptoms.
2007 Drain plug part number called "Plug-Side Trim" online is 74816JK01A which was superseded by 74816-JU40B. Cost is around $15 online for a factory part.
As someone with Asperger's, I have a deep appreciation for my 2000 Infiniti i30. I'm also determined to tackle the flooding issue it's been having. Thanks for sharing!

A little late to this party but I just completed repair of both driver and passenger side plugs in my 07 G35x. I have minimal experience working with interiors and all together this took me 2 hours. Couple thoughts:
1) I disconnected the battery during the repair as I heard you can trigger airbags during the repairs
2) I only needed a screw drivers and a 11in long neck pliers. Definitely a difficult repair without the long pliers as the part is pretty far back into the dash board where it meets the fire wall
3) I didn't need to disassemble the glove box assembly for the passenger side repair. Will definitely save a lot of time by not doing that and I didn't really think it would've added any extra room to work.
4) Seems that there's a little more space on the drivers side compartment and was easier to access, so if you're going to do both at the same time I'd recommend drivers side first just for ease. (I'm also right handed so this could be why)
5) I used part 74816-JU40B ordered from Infiniti Parts Online. 2 cost me $23.46 total which I find comical given how much of a headache this has been.

Z1 now sells them. If your problem comes back I would suggest modifying them as they suggest. Many people I know that replaced the part without modifying them have had the problem come back. Thanks for your tips. About to tackle this insanely annoying issue. Infiniti wanted to charge me $1,200!!! Saying they had to remove the entire dashboard and for a $23 part. Z1 sells them for under $10.

@@danhoven I got this leak developing as soon as I left the dealer for my 50k maintenance. Something tells me that their mechanics messed around with my sunroof drain hoping for me to come back and pay $1000+ for this fix. I called them and they said just to check it out my starting price is $400 and than goes up for every hour worked. Thieves!

I decided to do my fix differently and didn't bother with going through my firewall. Behind the floor insulation on the passenger side there's a black condensation hose. I used a 1/2" pex tee and tied into it. I then ran my drain down to it by using a 1/2" pex coupling and 5/8" clear hose. A few months later my driver's side worked. Some year G37's have a hole already on the driver's side floor but mine did not. I had to create a hole through the firewall to pass a hose through using the same method above. I'll never buy a car with a sunroof again! Good luck with yours!
Thanks for the video. I did away with the plug altogether and just extended the drain tube by using by using a 3/8 nylon hose splicer and about 6" of 3/8 in inside diameter 1/2" outside diameter tuning. I zip-tied the hoses to the splicer and then pushed the hose down the firewall through the hole intended for the plug. So far it works well and only cost me $6 in parts for both sides.
I like the idea. How were you able to secure the hose in that hole to make sure it wouldn't come out?
Hey Matt - so you just extended the original hose basically and put an additional hose on to extend it into the wheel well?
I just did this too. I stuffed some foam in the hole around the hose to keep it from popping out. What a nightmare to get to that damn grommet

Before finding this video the leak in my sunroof has been going on too long that it fried a $1200 component that cost me total $1500. I just kept the old part and cleaned it up along and flushed the tube from debris. Did a test with 3 cups of water to ensure it came out to the ground, SUCCESS! THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!

One tip - I'm told the air bags can potentially go off (triggered by static electricity) so to be safe, best to disconnect the battery before making these repairs

Another tip for anyone out there - you can rent a compact circular carpet drying fan from a hardware store to speed up drying the wet carpet.
Thanks for this. My car is at the dealer right now, charging me $350 for the $15 part (including install.). I am of the opinion that this type of thing really shouldn''t happen for what you pay for this type of car.....

The best fix is to reroute the line into the a/c drain located under the passenger side floorboard carpet.
Dont forget BCM on passenger side . It will get wet and/or the fuse box lower left driver side. Car wont have any power but will unlock. But seems completely dead.
Solution: get wat out; use fan if necessary.
If dry enough, all will be good
If not, dash light out, head lights stay on and car WON'T TURN OFF, u must pull fuel pump fuse inside wall next to battery under hood. Car will die. disconnect negative batt cable. Wait 15min turn on lights to drain any reserve power.
Turn off light switch, reconnrct batt cable. Start car.... 👍

I just bought a 2013 g37 and 2 days later it rained and my drivers seat was soaked gonna try to do this myself wish me luck
That sucks but great car. While your in there with all the tools and stuff you might consider doing both sides. My drivers side failed about a year after I did my passenger side and i was again drying out my car and fixing the plugs. Might be good to do both and get ahead of it, parts are cheap.

Can you come do mine please ?? It just started in passenger side. Dealer said 1800 to replace all the tubing. I have a convertible. 2012 but only 30k on it. Only drive in summer.
wow that's low miles for a 2012, I guess from the summer driving...no warranty left? I think someone else here showed the video to a local mechanic they trusted and had them do the work. You could try that?

You should have moded the plug by breaking the inside diffuser (little plastic thing sticking up on the inside) then added a plastic tube through the hole. Everyone with this problem is doing this mod, otherwise get ready for that crappy gasket to break down and wear down and then bam more water by your feet again
I had considered it but my view was this. The factory plugs lasted 12 years 130k. If new plugs get me the same life the car is unlikely to be on the road still at 260k miles or another 12 years (2031). So I saved myself the MacGyver'ing and said F'it if it last the same life as the 1st go around that good enough.

good video, a little to much detail when you only have 1 hand to work on what you explain; but beside that really nice to let us know we have a hope for our really cool infiniti's car. My mechanics was for 3 hour checking all and we look in some answer in google but we didn't got to your video. my car carpet is off so the water can dry. after we blow air thru the sunroof holes where the hose are connect it, we have some water coming more easy than before but i think to really fix this issue i will have to do what you show here.
Did you end up finding the part number in the publication description? I think this will fix you issues as well. Seems like a very very common problem and from what I saw almost always on the passenger side. So strange...Mines still dry and surviving this rainy season in FL. Good luck and enjoy the car!
Braden Ruggeri yes I found the part number in your description. your video gave me a hope and I was able to think how I can fix but I called a mechanic shop where I worked last summer part time and they told me bring it before I do any thing. they told me this is a common problem for any Honda Nissan or car who have sunroof, so they blow air thru the holes in the sunroof and the water start to run easy. they told me that fix this issue. I tried and dry my carpet and so far it is ok. the final test will be tomorrow where it suppost to rain very hard. if the water show again they were wrong and I will have what you teach us here if every thing goes well until Saturday, I will say no need to change any cap. I will let you know
So i have the same issues also got the part from the dealership brought it to the shop guy kept saying it was too small and the factory one wasn’t clogged he used the air compressor to blow the gutters but I noticed i still have a small leak I think it’s going from the groomets cuz the other side had a small amount off water mechanic probably just didn’t want to do it
yup, you're 100% right. Its not that they get clogged its that the grommet fails.
Also, as you saw in my video depending what year G you have the new one is a slight bit different design(smaller). This caused me NO issues. I ended up having to do the divers side about 2 years after this video and also no issues.

I think chances are really high its the same part. You could verify this in a few ways. If you are comfortable navigating online parts inventory lookup by VIN or model/year/etc do that and see if the part number matches. You could also just call your local dealer or an online parts vendor. I'm sure they are happy to help cross check for you that in fact your model year does have this part by design and also in my opinion probably the same part number.Hey word to the wise, get 2 of them. My drivers side plug failed about 15,000 miles later and I had a wet carpet again. Just my opinion but if one sides leaking the other is right around the corner so just do them both and save yourself the wet carpet PITA. I wish I had because I re-lived all the drama but this time on the drivers side.Note: I never made a divers side video but the process is really the same the biggest difference being you cannot get to it underneath like I could the passenger side. I know some other guys had drives side videos and I followed them with success. So props other video dudes. I think we have both sides covered now to help others
Same car. Just got a quote from the dealership for $1800 to install the new grommets, drain the hoses, clean and deodorize the carpets and dry it out. Told them that they have lost their damn minds.

I am having a similar problem. But I have a 2008 Infiniti EX35. Wet floor on front passenger side. Anyone has this problem? Should I replace the same part?
Its probably the same design even though its a different model. You could swing by your local dealer to verify the part is the same/buy the part. I'm sure most of my instructions in the video will carry over with a little improvisation.

Hey Nate so far so good. I'm down here in Florida and the car's taken some hard rain and the issue hasn't come back. It still catches me as odd that the new part is so much smaller but its been fine for me so far. Online I saw the old part we had was superseded so we don't have much of a chose I guess.Did your passenger side fail as well? How many miles? I've got 122k. Seems like passenger side fails most common. You'll also have to let me know if you find your plug was installed sideways like I talked about in the video.

Anyone out there heard about a leak into the backseat? I had a lot of water in front of the rear passenger seat as well as a little underneath the seat.
I could really use some help with this one.
I never had this issue but I vaguely recall reading that it’s the same part that fails as the front. I’m not sure how you’d access it or if that’s true. Sorry this is happening it’s super annoying I know.

Oh good question I wasn’t clear enough. Yes, I’m 90% sure there are 4 drains total, one in each corner of the sunroof. 2 drains go to the front and 2 go to the rear. See if you can go on a parts website and pull up an exploded parts diagram and you can confirm that and maybe get a clue where those rear ones are located to replace.

This is a nightmare I fixed mine and im having the same issue again 🤦🏻♂️
Same side? Both mine(both sides) failed like 12 months apart.

I used a long thin dowel to push it back in on one side I did, maybe try that.
So I just attempted this fix in my 2011 Sedan, I’ve done engine swaps that took less time lol..frankly I think you’re far better off just adding onto the hose and sticking the additional hose out the hole. This is an absolutely rediculous part and whoever designed this shit should be shot. I got everything out clean and added a straw to drain and I could not get the plastic firewall peice back in for 3 hours even with 14” needle nose pliers. I had it lined up however you are fighting insulation and a weird approach angle. I even but the side of my air vent to allow better access and still could not. Eventually the peice was destroyed and I was forced to add the hose extension but in hindsight I would have done that from the start. What a fucking stupid design Nissan. Give your head a shake.
I feel your pain man....I think when I had to do my 2nd one(drivers side) I used a log skinny wooden dowel to reach back and push it in because it sucks.
Yea you almost need a couple 3’ dowels or somthing like that the pliers don’t cut it for lining up the hole. Whoever put that stupid stopper on the end of the Drain plug Uhg...doesn’t help when you park under 3 huge maples either :/ appreciate your video though
