Red cedar is in abundance here in British Columbia Canada, my neighbour gave me some logs out of his camp fire pile & I made some nice red cedar vases out of it, free wood!
Just amazing. 😄 I was surprised in the end. Was expecting "cheap"... title being what it was... and its really quite clever. hehe. Has to be light weight too.
That really is a beautiful vase even if it is cheap wood. I guess the saying that you never know what the beauty of something is until you look deeply in to it
Gorgeous looking vase Ian. I have some Leylandii in my log store from two huge trees we had to have cut down in our garden. The trees came down about 7 years ago so if I'm lucky there will be some I can put on my lathe. Take care Ian. Cheers, Huw
I think all wood has potential to be a family heirloom or end up in the burn pile, some of my favourite pieces come from my annual firewood delivery or branches that break off in storms! Great work!
Thank you very much Leo! To be honest I’ve only had good experiences with Leylandii, even turning wet none of the pieces have cracked or warped! I’m sure one will at some point 😂
Cypress, maybe not the posh type, but there are many things to be said for that family of wood. Finished up great, as a light colored wood, still managed to give the impression of depth.
Hi Ian lovely vase you made it doesn't look cheap elegant vase, why did you put the top bit of vase in a bag with wood shavings good video and camera work by Lady or man
Thanks Jean! I put the piece of wood back into the shavings to stop it from cracking as easily, this is because the shavings are also wet so it’ll help stop the piece of wood losing moisture too quickly.. in theory! 😂
@@IanMacWoodturning thanks for explaining why you did it makes sense it turned out lovely. I'm learning more about wood turning look forward to your next project 👍
In my book, cheapest wood is free, delivered to my place, and all ready to go on the lathe. Any thing that requires cutting or hauling first means I have time invested in it, any we all know time is money! 🤣 Nice turn, and the two part for hollowing worked out nicely.
We use various methods.. with varied success haha. The usual steps are things like sealing the wood numerous times during the turning process & leaving it in a bag of chippings to keep it from drying out too quickly. Sometimes you may have to leave it thicker in order to turn down once it has dried a little and on other occasions you have to deal with the cracks and either make them a feature or try and fill them. There are lots of other tricks & methods but the ones listed above are some of the ways I try to reduce cracking/warping.
Thank you very much! It should be good for a long time as it was sealed on the inside with epoxy resin! The chippings are mostly thrown away but I want to find more uses for them

Free wood is the best wood Doug! Hope you’re well mate.
Not bad at all, very good design & outcome. Thanks
Thank you!

Nice outcome, never know until you turn it.
Very true mate!
Beautiful! Cheap wood or not, beautiful!
Thanks a lot Wes!
Very nice! I like the idea of making it 2 piece. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Tim!
The detail makes piece much better, beautiful, lacking in most I have watched
Cheers Rick! Yeah sometimes pieces need a little detail adding or they can be a bit boring!
WOW that is beautiful
Thanks Mary!

Haha thanks Summer, It is very light weight! Hope you’re doing well 😊
Very nice piece of work
Cheers Graham
Here in western Canada it’s poplar and red maple. Easy to get and it will amaze you sometimes with the beauty inside.
Some of the less desirable woods are severely underrated!
Great idea, nicely done! Thanks
Thanks mate

Very true Dennis! I find Leylandii to be underrated to be honest
Huh. Very cool. We just planted 15 or so leyland cypress as part of an eventual privacy hedge. Nice to hear it has a creative use too.
Thanks Andrew!
Nice piece Sir. Thank you for sharing
Thank you very much Lillie!

Look forward to seeing how they come out mate! Quite a nice wood to work with and ridiculously lightweight! Hope you’re well Huw.

I agree! Thank you very much for your comment
Hi, Ian. Great work with an amazing result. Thank you.
Thank you my friend
Leylandii is absolutely suitable for turning but also somewhat prone to cracking.
This vase looks nice, with an inspirational shape! 😎
Thank you very much Leo! To be honest I’ve only had good experiences with Leylandii, even turning wet none of the pieces have cracked or warped! I’m sure one will at some point 😂
great working sir
Thanks mate!
Lovely mate 👍
Cheers Paul!
I’m not sure what the cheapest wood in the world is but that came out nice!
Thanks mate!
Cheapest I can think of is free, so any tree could be the cheapest.
@@julesthecat9404 Very true Jules! This one hits that criteria as we salvaged it from becoming wood chippings!
looks pretty good for "cheap" wood Ian, great job!
Cheers Gaz! Hope you’re well mate.
Beautiful work, Ian.💞
Thanks Kim!
Very nice indeed.
Thanks man

Definitely an under-utilised wood, pleasure to work with & comes out quite nice, very light in weight too.

Thanks mate, hope you’re well.
That is beautiful. Yes, firewood is the cheapest wood.
Thanks James!
class chap
Thank you mate
How you dry it without cracks?

Kewl very beautiful
Thanks very much!
Cheap or inexpensive? Turned out nice either way.
Haha cheers! technically this particular piece was free..
Success with British Leyland - shame the motoring industry can't really say the same.
Ian, absolutely love the vase, but for how long can it be filled with water ?
And all that massive amount of wood shavings, is it used for anything ?
Thank you very much! It should be good for a long time as it was sealed on the inside with epoxy resin! The chippings are mostly thrown away but I want to find more uses for them
Lixa muito as peças podia deixar maiores🍚⚱
Actually, I think the cheapest wood is that which you pick up from the side of the road: Free!
You’re not wrong Stephanie! This was salvaged from the back of a Landscapers van haha
