      If they just list the actual RMS numbers and ditch the max I agree they would be at least respectable entry-level amps as far as the Cobalts go. But the market that they're targeting with these kind of amps doesn't really look past what the max power slapped on the front of the boxes. It's not really an excuse for them to do it cuz yeah it does damage the Branded makes people doubt whether the xrt or the hcca are actually doing the numbers they claim which every time they've been tested they meet and exceed their ratings but that's the gray area you run into with a lot of these budget hiwatt amps.

    For the price, it's about where it should be. For someone just getting in to car audio it would be OK. Then they learn from there like we all did. The first amp I purchased was an American legacy 2000. I had no idea what 2000 watts was suppose to do back then. Probably only squeezed out 400 tops but hey, I had bass lol. Another great video as always.

      Rockford Fosgate is now at the top of my list and Orion and Soundstream have dropped down several notches overall in terms of the brand. Thirty years ago, it did not matter which Orion or Soundstream amp you were installing. All of them were incredibly good. Now you have to really research because some of their product lines absolutely suck.
      Rockford Fosgate has three lines (Prime, Power, and Punch) and all of them are very good. Pioneer has always been mid-market for the last four decades but they remain consistent and their equipment has been steady. Great value but NOT junk.
      Check out Audio Control. Finally after three decades they are doing amplifiers and they are pulling no punches.
      Finally, if it is available at Walmart, you can expect cheap but not necessarily that good without verifying. This channel is a huge help to assist making decisions.

U hit the nail right on the head predicting what numbers and power it put out. I wasn't real impressed with the amp itself though. Rate it what it is. That's what they need to do. Most of the one star ratings are from obsessive bassheads and I can tell they almost certainly made installation mistakes. "This amp will not drive a pair of 2-ohm 12" subs in parallel". Well, guess what? A pair of 2-ohms speakers in parallel is an overall impedance of *1* ohm!
      I mean how freaking loud does it really need to be? This amp *will* drive 1 ohm fine. But you just would not get 4500 watts out of it. If you need that get more amps and more subs. I mean, really!

    The Orion Cobalt brand has always been their entry-level series. Nothing wrong with having a beginner line for those who cannot or do not want to spend more money on the HCCA or XTR series. Not everyone wants to wall off their vehicle and run 16 subs.
    The problem here...and with most all manufacturers these days is the MAX WATTAGE nonsense. It has actually gotten worse in recent months.
    If Orion had rated this amplifier 500 watts @ 4 ohms, 1000 watts @ 2 ohms and 1500 watts @ 1 ohm, people would have stood up and said THANK YOU ORION for telling the truth. No one...and I mean NO ONE buying this amp for $179 or whatever the msrp is, really expects it to produce 4500 watts. Why play this silly game Orion???

    So I did some digging and a guy who owns "MD audio "now owns orion says they owned another" big" name ,turns out it pyramid and lanzar pro . Basically pyramid and lanzar are cheapening out the budget line in Orion with these max power ratings even on speakers. Hopefully the xtr, hcca hold on.

    • @audiophile6475
      @audiophile6475 6 років тому

      Jonathan Rampersad Lanzar Pro isn't the same as regular lanzar and Lanzar Pro makes the OptiDrive for lanzar so they aren't cheaping out but I agree these entry level amps aren't helping the brand. It's like what Epsilon did to SS and PPI after they had real strong relaunches and were using primarily in-house design's on there amps till about 2012 when Epsilon began their meddling to make the brands "more" profitable. Also Pyramid is owned by SoundsAround.

    The thing with Orion is, the "max music power" rating, is always 4x the RMS rating of the product. My XTR Pro subs are 1250rms and "5000w max music power"

    • @volleyballjerry
      @volleyballjerry 2 роки тому

      Yup! The "max music power" rating is marketing crap designed to appeal to the teenage and uneducated buyers. I mean look - they print the word "Loud" on the box. Really? You mean there are folks that don't know that amplifiers are there to make the music louder?
      Their target market is not after impeccable sound quality. Their target market is someone with a pair of cheap 12" subs who is trying to date some high school sophomore girl who could not tell the difference between Mozart and an elephant farting. These buyers do not have anywhere close to the cash required for a high end quality sound system that would typically have Alpine, Rockford Fosgate, Audio Control, or even the Orion HCCA series amplifiers driving their speakers.
      But, again, Walmart shoppers really should not be putting a $2000 sound system into a 1997 Ford F-150 (hail and rust damage included for free) truck that is worth $1000.
      You will never see this amp installed in a BMW or an Audi.

If they market it at this price point as a 1,500 watt amp and some kid is looking at other budget amps with big numbers listed and printed on the box which amp will they choose? I have to figure thats what the marketing department was thinking when they pulled 4,500 out of thin air. Luckily we have a couple guys here on UA-cam that set the record straight. They are honest about how they got the amp and don't make shill videos. Thanks Ryan and Big d. I'm sure you've saved alot of people from making a bad purchase.

    i am putting together my first system and i went with a cobalt cb 1500.1D with a max power rating of 3000 watts lol, now i know it ain't getting near that but here's the thing, i picked up a orion xtr 122d that has a rating of 600 watts rms so i figure although it will never see 3000 it should be able to put out at least 600 watts right? its got 3 - 40 amp fuses. i'm dying to get it hooked up and see if i made the right choices in purchasing, do you think it will be enough to shake my ford escape a little bit?

    Always remember, as a general rule, to cut max watts in half. Then +/- 200 watts, lol. I'm always happy about my products. But yes, some other companies, fosgate... are rated, or even under rated. I bought 2 of these cobalt amps on sale for 90 each, and paired it with 2 1522 xfl's, 1 ohm each at 1200 watts (rms) each speaker. Speakers are rated 1k watts rms, but im having no prroblems. If it smells when i crank the thing, i turn it down to cool off. Rocks like hell!!! Yet I can still get stronger subs and still have the power to push the new subs without buying new amps.

    Personally I still call it a bust since there are no RMS ratings provided anywhere. Sure it's not a bad amp, but I don't believe in rewarding companies that try to be shady with my $$$ period. If they would have stated it was 1500 watts at 1 ohm and stuck with that I'd say it's a gem.

    • @volleyballjerry
      @volleyballjerry 2 роки тому

      As soon as I see "Loud" printed on the side of the box with NO RMS RATING, I would not even bother considering it. Remember a junior in high school with his first (*very* used) vehicle that he scraped $800 to buy from working at McDonald's is going to drool when he sees *4500* *WATTS* and *LOUD* on the box all for under $200.00.
      As he stated in the video - maybe this is a market that will make them money. Fool enough high schoolers who simply do not have the money for a *real* audio system (or do not know any better) and just sell a lot of them.
      Made in China - you can pretty much make a buck selling any type of junk if you sell enough of it.

    • @catch22frubert
      @catch22frubert 6 років тому +2

      Tony Lester They definitely need to put the correct Rms numbers in the manual at the very least, but it's distortion (clipping) that kills subs. You can always adjust the gain down a little if your subs are overpowered.

      Tony Lester usually takes alot though.... I got 2 DUAL audio bandpass box's the 12"S the OG areo port 1's & they are 13years old & still work today - they claim 500watts RMS each box I put them on 1100watts RMS for most their life

      Clean RMS doesn't blow speakers on my car subwoofers they are rated at 1150 wrms each and I am running both of them at true 4kw rms they don't get hot or anything the old Kove Armageddon's. On my house stereo my tower speakers are rated at 60 wrms each I am running them at a true 225 wrms each they sound great no distortion or anything! I don't have any issue overpowering speakers with clean amplifiers you do get what you pay for my audio isn't really budget though I just wait for tax return's lol!

    I think it would be better if Orion called it honestly, like a 1500.1. They regained a bit of credibility with the XTR lineup and now they take a step back with this. From a marketing perspective the naming is bad because the XTR2500.1Dz is a true 3000Wrms/6000W dynamic (still crazy to me)... But then you have this Cobalt... How by the same convention can you call this a 4500.1??? Car audio noobs will get this over an XTR (bigger number, lower price... Obviously better /s)

    • @catch22frubert
      @catch22frubert 6 років тому

      recon440 I can understand needing a budget line for the newbies. I can even understand aggressive marketing on the budget line, but they need to post the real RMS ratings somewhere. Preferably on the box and in the manual, but they need to put it somewhere.

    • @recon440
      @recon440 6 років тому

      Fair enough. I think in the budget line game, it's status quo to post inflated numbers to get noticed as they are catering to the car audio noobs. I think that even if they posted the RMS ratings, it would still be questionable. The problem that arises is in the mid-tier amp lineup, when a company posts something fairly believable like 1500-2000W RMS,. Unless it's a reputable brand like RF or some of the bigger Korean makers (Sundown, Skar, etc...) then it becomes a grey zone in respect to the credence of the rating.

    I think that there are people out there that buy stereo equipment simply for the social status of saying they have a system and really never research what they are buying they just see the name Orion and a high wattage number and they buy it. Also there are people who know better but they aren't making good money and and aren't patient enough to save up to get the xtra or hcca line. These amps are for them.

Lol Orion XTR,soundqubed, and skar are budget enough in my opinion though. And in those cases I think you get a little bit more than what you pay for. The soundqubed and the skar boards are China's best 2000 watt boards in my opinion and worth every penny. HCCA and the XTR lines are the the good lines of Orion. I bought a five channel Cobalt that didn't last long and Hooked everything up to 4 ohms and still heated up a lot. My guess is it was way overrated and it was just not enough amp to run all my speakers. I hate it when they are not honest with the power ratings. It's bad for the company image. At the time I did not buy another Orion 5 channel. I went with Sundown. It was a far superior amp. I wish Orion had an HCCA or XTR 5 Channel. That line puts out way more power than the ratings. Those are well built amps.

Then I graduated from engineering school, got a job at Raytheon. And then discovered a new world with names like Orion, Precision Power, a/d/s, SoundStream, Alpine, and Rockford Fosgate.
      A lot of these kids in 15 years will be driving much nicer vehicles with much nicer sound systems once they are graduated from university. Hopefully they will go easy on the volume levels today so they are not deaf when they are 45 (like many rock musicians are learning the hard way) and can still enjoy the music. :)

    I thought it'll do 1k. It did 1.5k. For the price and the features offered, this is a decent amplifier. Just wish the manufacturers would stop this "MAX" rating nonsense, with the RMS numbers this put out, 4500W is not even "peak" power, it is a completely bogus rating.
