Super super helpful. My first drum teacher forbade me from ever closing the gap and my right hand has lagged behind with rebounding technique. This sheds a whole new light and makes way more sense. Thank you!
I agree. Depending on what you're hitting, how hard or soft you hit, the angle of the end, shaft or butt of the stick you are using and the volume you need are all part of the story. The size of the sticks is also a factor. "One size does not fit all". The main thing is to hold the stick loosely while relaxing. Do not hold it like a weapon that you are going to kill someone with. Jazz drumming demands so much more technique than heavy rock because it "speaks" so many more languages.
i use to do that too before i really sat down and corrected my grip. in theory ur hands shld be mirror images of each other but again theres the whole camp of watever works for u
These videos are great. 48-year old beginning drummer here, and I really appreciate these in-depth discussions of the basics!
Bill Bachman is one of the world’s best humans. Amen. “Absolutes” hinder the journey.
It's incredible just how mature of a point of view this is. 👏
