“I’m Hinata Shoyo, from the concrete” is easily the best line from this show. It’s such a subtle declaration of war. Basically, he’s saying he’s gonna prove to Ushiwaka that he can beat him, even though he doesn’t come from a top school or an outstanding team. Also, Ushiawaka throughout the series will be called different names, so his actual name is Ushijima Wakatoshi, but people blend his name together to make Ushiwaka, which also is the name of a legendary warrior from the Heian period of Japan. Ushiwaka is said to be the strongest warrior from his era, which is meant to be an obvious representation for Ushijima in the show, as he’s the strongest in the prefecture and arguably in all of Japan.
It was so well done I loved it!
Hinata wants basically to demonstrate that Ushijima's theory is WRONG, that his "vegetables explanation" cannot be applied on volleyball. Which is basically true, I believe - you can put together the best team and train them in the best gym with the best training technique, but this will not give you the 100% probability of winning. It will "just" maximize the percentage of winning 😅

Okay, so the reason for the "nitwit" subtitle is that Japanese for idiot is "baka", which sounds quite a bit like a crow's cawing. That's what we hear in that moment- a crow mouthing off at the two youngsters.
Yep! The crows are saying "aho" which is another word with similar meaning to "baka", though.

@@SpringStarFangirl nah it was 100% "Aho" but yeah they pretty much mean the same thing. One will usually be more likely to be said than the other depending on where in Japan you are. In Tokyo Baka can be used in a joking friendly way, but Aho would be considered offensive. However, in Osaka it's the other way around.

Birds overhead calling "aho" after a character has a dumb moment is a common comedic trope in anime. Definitely "aho" :>

like i mentioned in a comment on a different video, season 1 is a fantastic start to the series and really holds its own way more than one might initially expect, but season 2 is itself that much better because it retroactively turns season 1 into the absolute perfect setup for the payoffs we get in season 2, it may actually be perfect in how it executes all the storytelling elements
edit: also in Japan the school buildings are generally standardized in a way where each year gets their own entire floor for their classrooms and activities and such, so it's generally perceived as unusual when an upper-classman is seen on a different floor than their own like Shimizu, a senior, showing up in the 1st-years' hallways

I like the way the German translates it, as It uses asphalt instead of concrete, and it sounds cleaner in my opinion, still such a good episode.

He compliments those whom he perceives as good or great players, like Oikawa. He loves to play with and against great players. And he really dislikes people who "brag" without basis.

the 'Shiratori' in "shiratorizawa' originally means 'swan' but they used different kanji to write it so it can be read as 'white bird', it symbolizes Ushijima as a mighty eagle.
As you said Ushijima is not arrogant (ok a bit) but he has every right to I mean he got selected for the youth national team, that's how strong he is.
The teacher was looking at their grades, in Japan you get numbers from 0-100% and Shoyo, Kags, Noya and Tanaka are not good students and you need 50% to pass, if you don't you need to take lessons and take the test again until you pass

You calling Ushiwaka an adult and on steroids keeps cracking me up 😂 also you're spot on with your assessment of his personality, glad to know you like his character! He's very commonly misunderstood by viewers at the beginning. Not sure if you made the connection but yeah the whole interaction at the end was a continuation of the scene earlier in the episode where Takeda was panicking. He was looking at their test results which were shocking to say the least 😂 so when he was talking about failing tests, he was speaking directly (in an indirect way) to the ones who are failing. And yes, you know how a lot of the schools in the series have like an animal associated with them? Shiratorizawa's "mascot" is an Eagle due to their power and superiority I guess as a predator. This won't be the last reference to the fight between the Eagle and the crows either.

On Ushijima or Japan (as what Hinata amd my sister called him) commented about "the sapling in infertile soil or whatnot" is also connected to Aoba Josai's name. Many main groups such as Karasuno, Nekoma, etc. have animal counterpart or symbolism, Aoba Josai doesn't have that (except for Iwa, tge man is the alpha 😂 and a certain character).
Though Aoba can also be read/means as green leaf. So Ushijima using plants as symbolism is so on point.

The author names the schools after animals in this series and then uses the imagery to make metaphors. Because Karasuno is symbolized by the Crow she uses a bunch of birds dor the names.
Karasuno - karasu means crow
Nekoma - neko means cat
Shiratorizawa - "shiroi" and "tori" means "white bird" which is a usually meant to be swan but anime uses a white Eagle. Likely because it is more intimidating
Fukurodani (not met yet) - "Fukuro" means owl
Seijo - "Jo" means castle which is why their banner says "Rule the Court"
Inarizaki (not seen yet) - Inari is a Shinto deity said to take the form of a white fox.
Kamomedai (not seen yet) - "Kamome" means seagull.
Itachiyama (not seen yet) - "Itachi" means weasel.
The nickname (combining of his two named) of Ushiwaka is a nod to one of the most famous Samurai warriors in Japanese history. Also means young bull.

0:43 whaaaat? thats what the majority of people think? season 1 is actually my favorite season of all four seasons and ive rewatched it the most amount of times out of all the seasons lol. this is my personal ranking.. just from like, the parts of the series that i enjoy the most and rewatch the most. not saying any part is better than the others, it's just my personal taste :)

2. second half of season 2
3. first half of season 4
4. season 3
5. second half of season 4 and first half of season 2 are tied
The matches and pacing get way better, and the character moments are generally better imo

Question. Why do you like Ushijima for speaking facts and not Tsukishima? He only speaks the truth as well, in a different manner though. At least some people would regard Tsukki's comments as sarcastic truth-insults but if Ushijima is just plainly telling you are the worst volleyball player and farmer he has ever seen, apparently it nice and OK xD
I think Ushijima only speaks with how things are! He is the best and just says others are either good or not, where as Tsukki just talks smack from what I've seen!

But no, anything he said he never meant to hurt/insult other people... and Ushiwaka's little crush on Oikawa is so fun and cute(?), he really wanted to play with him.

Ushijima's great--he loves volleyball and takes it very seriously (I like that he's excited to play those two at the end of the episode, and notice that he doesn't dismiss Hinata on the basis of his height here), and he's being honest rather than deliberately offensive. But I also like how Hinata, because he loves volleyball so much as well, responds to hearing Ushijima dismiss players who he thinks are strong--and does this by declaring war on him in the coolest imaginable way.
And yes, lots more girl characters (and a couple of grown women) in this season! And lots more characters in general, and you're going to find yourself loving a lot of them.

I like the beginning scrimmage match in this episode, it shows the audience that might've spent season 1 learning and trying to acclimate to volleyball what the next level can look like, and sets the tone for the future.

As a manga reader, who read and watched the entirety of Haikyu!! at least 30-40 times, I can attest to this.
Haikyu!! somehow manages to get better and better, find new highs and create even better payoffs.
Especially the things that are not animated yet are absolutely phenomenal. I said it before, but I can HIGHLY recommend any fan to read the manga (content).
The writing in this piece of fiction is truly special, and yet it is casual enough to be enjoyable af even if you don't care or look for writing.
PS: You hit the nail on the head on Ushijima, he is very straight forward and honest. It comes off as cold and rude, but he's genuinely just an honest guy that means no harm.
I'll definitely consider checking it out once I've watched the anime!!

You correctly figured out Shiratorizawa's representation. Shiratori would mean a White Bird - in this case an Eagle. Loved that you even figured out the background detail, I never noticed that the ground behind Ushiwaka is "fertile soil".
The other part of this name window is Ushiwaka. Ushijima is fairly unremarkable - it means Ox Island and doesnt have deeper meaning as far as I can tell. Wakatoshi means "Young advantage" - his name literally comes over as "Ahead of the curve".
As for the whole confusion around the worry of Takeda and the terrified players. Takeda was having a panic attack after seeing their latest tests. He is seriously worried they wont pass and as he established - anyone that doesnt pass wont go to the away games as the repeat exams will be held at the same time. As for who is a good student. They have 5 classes in each year. Class 4 and 5 is always advanced (smarter) - in first year both Tsukki and Yamaguchi are in these. In second year Ennoshita and Narita are advanced. In third year Daichi and Suga are advanced. Dont take this as "everyone who is not advanced is a dumbass" - these are just the guys on the team with the most book smarts. Clearly the really dumb ones are Hinata (unsurprisingly), Kageyama (maybe a bit surprisng), Noya and Tanaka (neither is surprising either when you think about it :D ).
Loved the Coach Carter reference - This is actually very serious thing in Japan - You arent considered a good athlete unless you can do both. Which is why most of the "perfect" players are also like straight A guys (I am sure you know who I am reffering to :P )

I don't know if you read this comment, but I want to share my impressions. I went to the cinema yesterday, the movie "Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle", and it was incredible. I won't go into spoilers. i almost cried twice, at the beginning because the scene with Kenma and Hinata made me emotional, and at the end when the match ended. watching Haikyuu!! in the cinema is a completely different level!
Why are you surprised that hinata, nishinoya and tanaka are bad at school. They are almost stereotypical idiots.

It's hard for me to say that season 1 was the worst (even though it's still great) honestly, because many amazing moments from the future seasons would not have happened or hit as hard without season 1.

In case you haven’t connected it yet, the papers and the file Takeda-sensei was looking at were Tanaka, Nishinoya, Kageyama and Hinata’s test scores. Then you have his reaction to seeing the scores.
