- Bernie Worrell of Parliament came by the MoogFest Pop-Up Shop yesterday (Friday, May 20, 2016) and played (around) a little for the folks gathered within. Enjoy!

This is THE MAN who made me want a Minimoog when I was a teen and first heard him play Flashlight back then in the 1970’s!Now whenever I play my vintage Model D, I can’t help but think of him and Flashlight!! RIP Bernie..you are missed.

Yeah he did! I've got to see George Clinton 3 times between 2012 or so and 2015 or so. I don't know if he was with them touring or not. Couple people I got to see in person were Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker. Separate shows though. Fred was dope, played James Brown and JB's. Maceo was at Chicago Jazz Fest and it was terrible. I love jazz and I love funk, but I was hoping that one of the baddest sax players to ever blow a horn would've done some funk too, but he did one or two James Brown songs and they were way off tempo, much slower than they should've been. I was disappointed about that one. After listening to "Suds" from Live in Dallas, I was expecting something like that. No such luck. Maceo is one of 2 people I can pick his saxophone out in about 1 or 2 notes. Coltrane is the other.
Bernie maximized the moog! He made it do stuff that was legendary. His P-funk work can't be duplicated. He was at the top of the food chain with them synthesizers, period! Hate he's gone.
I recognized his first riff, and only first really saw him demoing the Sub Phatty back when it 1st came out just wishing I could afford it. And just last monday the 28th of Aug, 1 day before my 35th birthday I FINALLY GOT ONE!!
I will have to make a jam to honor the great WORRELL!!! Love his style and FUNK!

His work can be duplicated, you would need about 5 or 6 people at least to do all his takes in a live setting though. He multi tracked all his stuff and just kept making the track fill out. Clinton usually just let him go nuts cuz he knew Bernie had the complete vision musically.
Also the minimoog is a simple as hell synth to use if you ever played one. It's not really about him maximising the moog at all. The guy was a musical genius and would make something sound good out of a frying pan and water too. Same goes with Junie.

Kudos to Bob Moog for helping Bernie(and so many other keyboard players) find the Funk.

Got to give credit to Jim, Scott and Bill Hemsath too. They were the architects of the Minimoog more than Bob was.

I ain't saying this because he's gone, I'd say it if he was right here same way. He's the greatest I've seen on a synth. All the rest had to fight for second place. Played with a smile on his face and made the Moog do things that everyone else had to try and emulate. RIP Sir. Heaven is lucky to have you in it's orchestra

Edit: Okay, maybe not "invented", but he was certainly a pioneer and a driving force in getting that type of groovy Minimoog sound into the public ear.

George did not come, but I was delighted with meeting Tyrone Lampkin, Rodney "Skeet" Curtis, Michael Hampton, and a whole lot of others. George didn't come until much later. Go--Go band called Rare Essence the wickedest band alive his name was Marky they called him Godfather he is awesome as well...
I'm a guitarist who was fortunate enough to do a few gigs with Marky! Phenomenal keyboardist whom I'm sure was influenced by Bernie too!

Good to see someone realize, routing his synths and clavinets through effect pedals he was a real think outside of the box musician the things he did pretty much come standard on workstations today but its good to recognize and originator!!!

It's funny, I was in South Carolina on tour playing with the Bernie and the Woo Warriors and I called Moog and told them I was in their generally vicinity playing a show with him, and the guy on the phone did not even know who Bernie Worrell even was! I literally had to explain to him who he was I had to bring up anything George Clinton - P-Funk related albums and tunes, even "Flashlight! It was breathtakingly quite surreal.
IMO most kids don’t respect the past. If Bob was there, Bernie would’ve gotten the Red Carpet!
I got to spend about 3 weeks with Bernie, working on a film score in the mid 90's. The guy was a ton of fun!

No disrespect to Mr. Worrell, but I'm not hearing anything particularly impressive or original here in this clip. @8:00 he is just adding a bit of modulation to the bass sound. Anybody that knows a little bit about playing synthesizer can do that, including me ;D. And Herbie Hancock is an amazing keyboard player. His playing is generally on quite a different level than what we're hearing here.
But Bernie thought of it before you did.
