@@Magnus_Loov I understood perfectly, he is not comparing the arrangements of the songs exactly, he just used them to demonstrate the sounds with their differences or similarities, I particularly like the warmth of the vintage minimoog more, but I like the improvements added in the new minimoog.
interesting, this song by Harold Faltermeyer, on the new minimoog seems to have brighter and more aggressive attacks, could it be due to the aftertouch? They both make beautiful sounds, but I like the rudimentary shape of the vintage Model D better.
Wow! Excellent comparison video. The original outshines the reissue for me in almost every case. Part of it is the EQ, but the original sounds tight and complex while the reissue slurs the sounds together more. The original sounds like it would sit much better in a mix.
@@AndyWhitmore Oh, and the EQ comment was about the internal coupling caps and the output stages of the synths themselves. Electrolytics age and that's part of the old guitar amp tonal mojo too. Those caps were generally loose tolerance when new anyway so there was always unit to unit variability. Your original D sounds stellar.

Yes I agree - this is my best moog comparison video - which is a surprise as my initial idea was just to demo the old moog - but there seemed to be a problem with it so I started demoing the new minimoog - then the next day - when I was demoing the old moog fault - it turned out to be digital noise introduced by Apple's internal Mic - by then I had both setup so decided to do them side by side!
Still don't know if and if yes how aging affects semiconductors. Thank you for the video. Both minimoogs sound the same amount of aweseome. The semiconductor aging thing might really be a thing to check out. Oh yes and love. Lots of love. I expect that to be common in a topic like that.
Axel F Bass is not working with right hand in this video. It wasnt composed right hand! Its for left hand or played both hands - you can hear thats off. But great video, great Synth - the sound of my life. Thank you! BTW Axel F Lead wasnt a Mini Moog!
Original is more detuned, and sounds better. If you were to detune the reissue it may sound more similar. I think its because the new one may have an active tuning circuit that adjusts frequency with temp.
you know what? It doesn't matter how hard you try - you always get some part wrong!!! However - the detuning you are talking about is present on a lot of the re-issue sounds - just not the Gary Numan or some of the others - I believe the "Rick Wakeman Catherine Of Aragon bass" is a good example of equal detuning
@AndyWhitmore it takes insane skill in playing and in synthesis to match those sounds. Personally I would resort to midi and trial and error to get the timing right. Although that's not even available on the 1979 minimoog I believe. Thanks for putting in the effort to make the video. 🙏🏼😎
Mozart or Beethoven probably wouldn't be able to hear them as they didn't have a 240volt plug socket in those days - or an amp & speaker for that matter!! However - yes - what would they do with Logic Pro, CS80 & Minimoog!! Wow!

100% the original old one has a different weird buzzy, nasally alien nature. It's very clearly different to my ears. But some sounded closer, songs like Beverly Hills theme they are very similar to one another. Either way they both sound excellent.

I do agree - but a familiar comment is - "what will the 2016 moog sound like in 40 years?" As an owner - I would say - exactly the same - the original moog sound - hasn't changed - & I don't expect the re-issue to change - in fact - the re-issue is just built to more exacting standards making it slightly less warm & slightly less character - however - it is a much better bass synth on modern tracks than the vintage.
I think that every producer puts his own meanings into any musical instrument. I'm looking for my sound, you're looking for yours. I've heard many different opinions about the same synthesizer. Some people thought the Minimoog sound was primitive, outdated, difficult to mix, others gasped with happiness when they turned it on and admired the depth of this sound, its simplicity for mixing. And that's just great! My post is addressed to those who try to argue about any sound. But certainly not to those who share their emotions. I recently laughed at myself. I was choosing the sound of one of three similar and available in the store for purchase analog instruments. and "found" the one that seemed ideal to me. I am writing and smiling now. I understand everyone's feelings well... :). I just ask you not to argue in the comments, it looks weird. 😂
Great sounds. Can't say I hear much of a meaningful difference apart from the out of tumeness on some of the patches. And, the older moog looks like a beat-up school desk from the 1980s - in a cool way
Whilst I somewhat agree with what you’re saying - I do really like the Re issue and as explained some of my videos the midi implementation & the tuning is much better on the reissue which when you’re sitting the moog into a modern track is essential
The reissue will sound the same in 30 years when it’s full out of spec caps. The reissue sounds great to me, plenty of bass, just a little more focussed and less flabby
Hmm, I’m sorry to say but this just sounds like the sounds were not programmed to match on both units. Obviously, a 50 year old pile of electronics will change over time. I’m not sure if old age changes the sound. I do wonder if we compared a new 1970 to a reissue if those would sound closer.
hi - thanks for watching - I did my best to duplicate the sounds - & yes - the settings were not matched as the tolerances are different - nevertheless - the synths sound very different - so its a challenge - probably cos one them is new & the other 50 years old!
Dude, that Queen lead is the BOMB , I love that riffand have always wondered what synth .. Great video, would have been good to include the Behringer Poly D , some of us can't afford the luxury of a MINI MOOG. Peace

So far i know it was Jupiter 8. Almost any good coverversion is using jupiter 8 (or JX3P)

They’re super close, but the old one does have a bit more mojo I think. Sometimes imperfections are what make things great.
Yes - they both sound good & amazing the variety of sounds they make - the old one does sound more squelchy!

Great comparison! Where I hear the big difference is in the bass sounds. Vintage unit has punchier, faster envelopes.

The difference is mainly due to the response to the same position of the knobs

The old moog has seen a lot of action- I bought it new!!
I compared my reissue vs 3 old ones and sold the reissue. It sounds plastic and has no low. Why bother keeping a moog if it lacks bass.
