No you don't want people to protest if you still are voting republican. If you vote conservatives into power, they are going to keep banning these books and taking away the freedoms and the right to silently protest. They already took down a video, next year maybe the ceremony will be censored or the students will be checked before entering.
If you are voting for conservative in this current climate then you don't want peaceful protests or people to shine light on things that are important to him.
You may be fine with this action and still call yourself a "conservative", but those conservatives getting elected into power are NOT OK with this. That's very clear.

I really like this comment because, really, this isn’t an issue of right or left. This is an issue of what we the people will tolerate from an overseeing power. Though the right tends to lean more into the idea of taking these books off of shelves, it isn’t a characteristic mutual to all who adhere to more conservative ideologies. You have my respect.

I am a professional librarian and activist. I am sharing this video with my fellow librarians and all those who understand how much we need to fight against these elements of our society who are seeking to turn us into an authoritarian nation through rampant censorship and trying to prevent the dissemination of information and knowledge. This young lady showed incredible courage. Pity the superintendent chose cowardice. Perhaps he is afraid that if he read "The Handmaid's Tale" he would realize he is no better than the main antagonist "The Commander."

This is a ridiculous take... Not allowing a book in a school library doesn't warrant the panic you're talking about... So the overall message is ridiculous to any mature adult.

Besides, I'm sure you wouldn't want people reading the genuinely banned books, assuming there was some way to access them.

Books being removed from school libraries is an equity issue because not all students can afford to buy books and community libraries are becoming underfunded.
An entire school district taking a specific book out of all its school's libraries is functionally a ban for the students who attend that school. It's also a statement made by those who are above school principals in the administrative hierarchy that says "we refuse to condone the themes and insights contained in this material". Parents and community members generally trust educators to have their students' best interests at heart.
Handmaid's Tale is dystopian literature. Dystopian books are cautionary tales that often warn against fascist or totalitarian elements in a culture, about the danger they could pose should their influences become all-powerful. Learning from dystopian fiction is an essential part of a good language arts education.

When we read, we learn and this includes illustrations that are in books............Annabelle, thank you, for taking a stand for all of us, who want to be daily learners of the past, the present, and what may be our future. We should never be afraid to open a book. It allows us to be engaged, see other people's points of view, creates dialog, brings us on adventures, allows us to learn that we want to learn more, it allows us to walk along people like us and not like us at all, we learn about the complexities of life and of our world, helps to see circumstances that we may never have before, and allows us to be better decision makers. We are allowed to feel and learn, about others, and ourselves. Reading even keeps your brain healthy. Be eager to hold a book in your hand and open it. Your world will open up. Congratulations on your graduation from high school Annabelle. Interesting that your Superintendent and others tried to stifle your by keeping books from you, but it was your opening many, many books, with and without illustrations, and learning from them, that allows you that High School Diploma. I'm talking about banning books. You seem to be mad that an establishment has decided to no longer carry a book and therefore think it's banned. You're mad that the majority has spoken and don't want their tax dollars being spent carrying books they don't approve of. If you're gonna pick a hill to die on at least pick one that makes sense.

Define “age-inappropriate sexual content”. The depiction of sex? Okay. Get rid of To Kill a Mockingbird, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and Les Miserables. The depiction of rape? Okay. Get rid of the aforementioned once again.
To be pickers and choosers, especially in a situation like this, is inherently fallacious. Not only does it highlight bias, but it also highlights an agenda. If you find something to be so vehemently upsetting to you, don’t check it out. Take your culture war out of our schools.

    • @InspectorIV

Define "age-inappropriate sexual content". Is it sex as a concept? Ban Les Misérables, Moby Dick, and Middlemarch. Is it the depiction of sex? Ban A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, To Kill a Mockingbird, and 1984. Is it rape? Ban a good deal of the books aforementioned. Surely you see the fallacy in this?
Also, making what was previously readily available, freely obtained information no longer readily available and freely obtained is exactly what the concept of banning is. In privatizing these works, the innate fact is that they are being banned. Not to mention the fact that, if you are so vehemently upset by these books, you are entitled to restrict your child from checking them out. Us students are sick and tired of these fruitless and harmful culture wars being fought in our schools.

If a book is "banned" but one can purchase it locally and read it, is it banned? For all the parents who want their kids to be able to read this "banned" book it is apparently available at a local bookstore. What is banned in Idaho, as of July 1st, is a state entity or school district compelling a teacher's or student's speech when it comes to "preferred pronouns".

    • @InspectorIV
      @InspectorIV 4 місяці тому +1

Yes, it would still be considered “banned”. A book in a library is considered publicly available information. When a book is banned from a library, it no longer becomes publicly available; it is privatized, seeing as it needs to be purchased to access it. This is the basis of our issue: banning access to information that would otherwise be public if not for the choices of an over-arching power. I, along with a myriad of other students, are extremely tired of these meaningless culture wars taking place in our schools. They not only discourage free-thought, but actively disrupt the intellectual journey of many who genuinely want to learn.

It's about giving our children access to a world of ideas that they can use to base their own life choices on. A lot of kids don't have the access to book stores, much less the money to buy books they want to read and learn from (maybe they learn they like the ideas in those books....or maybe they don't. But they deserve the chance to make that choice by themselves). Are only wealthy children who can spend money buying banned books worthy of the choice to read them?

    • @Gnostic72

SUCH BOOKS though in the Library are NOT in the children’s section. So to take them out makes no sense. I have yet to see a 6 or 7 year old request to take out The Handmaid’s Tale, Fahrenheit 451, Catcher In The Rye, To Kill A Mockingbird, etc. So this PANIC over such books is stupid & ignorant (as the folks who support them) & pointless. And WHY even remove them if they can access the “offensive books” in other ways. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT YOUR KIDS TO READ & CAN READ, YOU HAVE NO CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO TELL OTHER PARENTS WHAT THEIR KIDS CAN OR CANNOT READ - OR THE REST OF THE COUNTRY FOR THAT MATTER. First lesson; capitalize letters that begin a sentence. Second lesson; by banning books, you ban ideas and thoughts that help shape a person's overall view of the world. By not experiencing other's thoughts and being constrained in what you are able to read or see, you're just trying to control others.
