It's a shame that after this film and Aliens, the Alien franchise will never have such a reaction again, due to the current state of affairs in Hollyweird.
Stop being boring. Hollywood has been criticised since bqck in the 1910's for being out of step, too promiscuous, too pro civil rights, too liberal, etc etc etc. It really is a boring trope.
@@fixedguitar47 Sequels and Prequels, actually. In 1992, there was Alien 3, which almost destroyed the franchise, and then came Alien: Resurrection. They were not that good. In 2012 and 2017, Ridley Scott made Prometheus and Alien: Covenant which were "prequels" to the 1979 film. And coming up in August, a new film Alien: Romulus, which takes place between the events of Alien and Aliens.
I cannot convey what seeing this movie was like when it came out. The advertising alone was genius, no hint of what the movie was at all, no scenes from the actual movie, just the egg, cracking open with an eerie light and the caption “in space, no one can hear you scream” I mean come on, I had to see that! It was absolutely riveting and terrifying at the same time. I mean people were ducking and hiding behind the seat in front of them! Nothing prepared people for what this was. As a cinephile of the highest order It remains the most impactful screening I have ever experienced.
It wild to think the time period between now and when this documentary came out (2024 vs 2003) is almost as long as the time from when the original film came out (2003 vs 1979).
That's always been one of my biggest gripes about the theater experience: you never know whether they have the sound equipment adjusted or maintained correctly. Or the projector levels, or the focus, or the matting, etc. etc. When I saw Scott's "American Gangster" the matting was so wrong in the theater that the top half of characters' heads were cut off! It must have been an odd matting with that film because I've also heard the opposite and that lots of people saw boom mics.
Yeah, I saw it in a 900 seat theater at its first showing. It was 35mm so it was kind of washed out on such a large screen. Plus, naturally, they were doing some work in the projection booth or something. I mean, honestly? I saw it the second time in a 250-seat theater and the projection was SO much sharper! I am glad that I got to do that.
My mother will never forget this Movie, simply for the fact that when in the cinema and the chest buster came out, the lady behind was sick all over her !!!
Aww poor Dan. I’m crying listening to that story, I truly relate and understand what he was going through. I can only imagine his emotions in that moment.
I laughed a lot in Dark Star, and probably saw it more often than Alien. I totally got that movie. Dan O’Bannon (co)wrote two of my all time favourite movies.
Don't worry! I believe the Alien franchise can bounce back. Fox or Disney. Needs to give it time. I don't think we need to keep pushing out sequels after sequels. Alien and Aliens set a high bar. That can't be matched.
The title "Alien" is clever. It refers to the lethal, slimy xenomorph killing machine. It also refers to the "alien planetoid". The derelict space ship feels like a "haunted house".
Absolutely wonderful film. I sneaked my 10 year old daughter in to see the Directors cut- but she bolted screaming at the 'Chest burst' moment. I had to let her go!
Alien 1 was an absolute masterpiece, Alien 2 was Great, the rest of the Alien movies were all a total disaster. Hopefully the newest 2024 Alien movie doesn’t suck.
Love all the Alien movies making of you've been putting up. Could u please put up anything u have on Blade Runner or BR 2049. If u have please let me know and I'll look for them. Love this site for all the movie minutiae and behind the scenes stuff. Thanks!!
There it is again, so there IS a 4 hour cut that is even more horrific, I hope that someday it will pop up
God this should be professionally assembled and released! (With an intermission.)
Check out some of the cut scenes. Some of them with the creature were actually quite bad.
This is the greatest Sci Fi movie of all times.
One of a handful for sure. The Thing is right up there too.
Aliens 2 was a very very close second.
Chris.😀😀😀

Yeah, well get ready for a whole new level of Boring and pushing a
agenda 😂
How’s that for a trope?
I was there at the Egyptian opening night. Walking by the jockey. Walking through mother. Memories. So sad those set pieces burned down

My all time favorite movie!
I didn’t sleep for a week after seeing this movie. It was the most incredible experience.
I was at that Dallas preview and it was just as they described.

My second favourite movie, fantastic! (My favourite being The Thing).
Me too, they are both amazing, except that The Thing was not successful when it came out however it became a cult classic years later.
@flashladderacrobat oh dude, I saw The Thing in 82, was only 12 and it blew me away! My 3rd favourite is the 1986 The Fly. Am old school :)
The Thing special effects is still number 1 in 2024 and years to come

The movie poster and tagline were great too!

Give me an adult intelligent engineers storyline and I'll be happy

Game Over Man Game Over
4 hours long 😮
Would have loved that cut

Dan O'Bannon went to every person in line and said, "Hope you enjoy MY movie." 😀

Of course it will. Haven't you seen the pattern yet? All new movies suck, especially big franchise movies.
I've never seen any of the sequels. Zero interest.
There is no such thing as a bad movie that has Sigourney Weaver.
