So true bestie
🤣 spoken like a true chess enthusiast. You know...I don't want any more friends and then I wonder why I don't know more people who play chess. You wrapped it all up lol
Yeah
Ben makes me feel like the smartest person in my chair. Don’t touch my chair
In the game of chess, you must never let your opponent see your pieces
That's why Tal smoked so much
Go Ben! But also, stay there!
This is weird, I fell asleep last night watching your video on the 1984 match, then I wake up and find this, I'm somehow getting updates on decades old chess matches in real time.
You fell into Ben's trap of getting his opponents asleep to drop their flag and win
@@lellosbarello90 all about boring chess
More, we need more games!
Phenomenal edit in the middle there, absolutely flawle - uh - I mean, what edit?
go ben
...but stay there.
Frankly, terrible
Thank you Ben and all the lovely people who work so hard to give us these fantastic videos.
Love the lectures
Sixteen games seems a good compromise length for a match. I don't like the 10, 12, or 14 game matches either but I hate blitz finishes even more. Just restore the champion retaining the title in the event of a tied match.
I like how Ben tells stories
Thank you I enjoyed this
Some of these lectures were filmed before you were born!!
Bro I swear that this intro puts a smile on me every time I have no idea why, but I’m happy about it
You might have mentioned that Fischer/Karpov would have indeed happened had FIDE accepted Fisher's final condition, that the challenger had to win not only 10 games but also by a two-point margin. So a 10-9 'win' by the challenger would still have been insufficient to win the title.
Karpov and Kasparov, one did this one did that....
*In the rythm of Paul Revere*
He did it like this
He did it like that
He did it with a whiffle ballbat
So I'm on the run the cop got my gun
Right about now is time to have some fun
The king Adrock that is my name
And I know the fly spot where they got the champagne
Don't forget that
1:41 Ben Finegold = Bruce Banner, confirmed.
Rawwwwwr!
The unlimited match seemed like a good idea at the time because people like Charles Kalme conned people into thinking that a match to 10 wins wouldn't go longer than 23 games, because that's how long such matches took in the 19th century. It sounds totally insane, but Kalme was a professional mathematician and had a series of specious arguments that people were afraid to challenge because of his credentials, and also because they really wanted to believe it, because the Unlimited Match was "Fischer's System".
Basically, Kalme believed that there was an unalterable, scientific "Draw Expectation" that was 100% based on the match format, and was totally unaffected by other factors, like player parity, playing styles, era, or anything else. According to Kalme, a Pure Wins match was the best format, and guaranteed very few draws (because if people have to win 10 games, they'll obviously try to do it as quickly as possible). On the other hand, the worst format was the Wins or Points format, that Karpov and Korchnoi had used in the 1974 Candidates Final (never mind that the other 6 Candidates Matches that year used the same format, without getting the same results. Kalme was famous for tossing out data that didn't fit the pattern he wanted).
Anyway, Kalme's views were ruined in 1978, when Karpov and Korchnoi had almost exactly the same number of draws after Game 24 in a Pure Wins match as they had had in the Wins or Points match. But the Pure Wins format struggled on anyway, until the 1984/5 match killed it stone dead.
I went to two of the London games. Absolutely fascinating and memorable.
Ben is watching "Sweet Anita Speedrun to Prison", wtf :D

looking for a chess coach; are you still in the market of coaching? if so, how can I look at your plans?
Hooray!
At 27:02 you say that if ...,QxPd6 then Re8+, which wins Q for R. Better is your favorite move (Knife f5). That is, Nf5+ winning Q for free.
Hmm. Very suspicious
In the final position, black can play Bh7, so if white plays Qe3 then black plays g5.
I've seen this one!
what is ben watching 29:15 sweet anita speenrun to prison lmao
Go ben!
at the final position in game 2, game is lost anyway, but what about Bh7 to defend against mate (Qe3) with g5?
Wonder what Ben said when they needed to cut the video
Wasn't Nd7 in the second game a sealed move?

This video is full of weird things happening, weird things said..and good chess analysis..
Question! Why can't black play bishop back to h7 and the push g5 if check. Given that black is losing but there is still a chance?
I just saw this too! I left a comment about it before seeing yours. It's not clear, at least not to me, that White is winning at all.
no talking!
39:55 where's the mate after Bh7?
g6 square is covered by the knight
@@oskarkruger5483 But now if Qe3+, g5 so it's not mate.

Why is Kasparov better than Karpov?
Because he has the spa.
(EDIT: Last game) Instead of resigning Black plays Bh7 and White takes the c pawn. Black is still losing badly, more than a rook....less than a queen but the game goes on for while.
I hadn't read the comments. I just saw that move today: .., Bh7 / Qe3+, g5 /hg5+, Qh5 / Qxc3 (Do NOT win the Bishop by trading Queens, or the c-Pawn will queen), Black brings out his Bishop & the game continues, with White's a-Pawn being a big threat.
Ben is not a Zoom grandmaster
I think this was recorded fairly early in the pandemic, when people had only just started using Zoom. (Also, how did Zoom come from nowhere like that? Very suspicious.)
I don't think I agree with you that the "unlimited" match format is dumb... I think it sounds like it could be interesting.
Maybe Magnus would be more interested in continuing to defend the title if it wasn't compressed down to two weeks or whatever it currently is. More time for preparation, or to just take a break for a few weeks or even months.
nothing interesting about a match with infinite games, you want to spend your whole life playing it? and your whole life watching it?
His context of how do you book a venue for an unknown amount of time is a pretty valid problem
Not wanting the match to last forever I think is precisely the reason there (eventually) would be an incentive for both players to play for a win, and therefore result in fewer draws and a more exciting match, overall. (As it stands now, I believe, a drawn match means the champion retains the title, right? And even for the challenger -- a draw is better than a loss, et cetera...)
I don't really see the venue thing as a huge problem either. Just book it one game at a time.

It's all about the Benjamins...
Fischer was right - chess players are petty and mean spirited. Chew on that.
Game one analysis was a bit sloppy. Too shallow, frankly, terrible.
Where is Grandmaster Benjamin Finegold ? I'm Carlo Cali 1800 and change no title and your not. Shalom Ben, you had better be Jewish too. What's your opinion ? Could the Jewish player from Brooklyn Bob Fischer have handed Karpov ? I must admit, I think he would, but he was terrified he might lose. I'm dying to hear what GM Finegold thinks. Oh the Iron Lady 👩.....
This is the saddest thing I've ever seen in my life. You need to get therapy not a clip mic to show off while you talk into your gaming headset for a 'lecture'
I think this was recorded during the pandemic. People used what they had.
@@beeble2003 That doesn't explain why he has a clip mic, and a gaming microphone.
@@aliceroberts5928 So maybe he's using the clip mic because it's a better mic, and using the headset as a headset, and ignoring the fact that it has a mic. Or maybe he was wearing the clip mic from the last thing he did and forgot to take it off. I mean, seriously, what difference does it make to anything? If you're so bothered by seeing a video of a man and two microphones, maybe _you're_ the one who needs therapy? It's not normal to be so worked up and judgemental about such an insignificant thing.
@@beeble2003 It's okay if you don't understand. I don't hold it against you.
