The riffs in this are some of the most badass I think that's ever been recorded. But yeah, Bathory kind of set the standard of having fuzzy buzzsaw recordings, but they always had great songwriting.
I'm 60 years old and have loved metal since I was a kid (Black Sabbath especially). I had never heard of this band, but now it has reinvigorated my thirst for metal. Thank you for providing me with another few years of great music, as I will be listening to all I can of their catalog
Bathory - “Enter the Eternal Fire” (black metal) + “Twilight of the Gods” (super epic Viking Metal). Dom Dracul’s cover of Bathory’s “You Don’t Move Me” is rad, also.
This album can actually be pointed as the one that started the shift of the black metal genre to the viking metal. Bathory is a vastly variable band when you listen to different albums. Put this one ("Blood Fire Death") next to "Twilight of the Gods" and I am pretty sure you'll not recognize it's the same band. BTW the final (title) track on this album is an epic masterpiece.
Fuck yeah! ✊ After this album, they moved into/pioneered Viking Metal, of which there are some elements here. Singer/guitarist is Quorthon, who was also the only instrumentalist on lot of stuff. His dad, “Boss,” produced and founded this record label.
I’m going to keep it honest and sincere being a person of color who’s liked metal for half of his life I’m 25 so I’ve missed a lot seeing stuff like this on YT makes me beyond fucking happy. Your analysis of this was extremely articulate and amazing. Also I don’t usually bother with suggestions but please listen to Born For Burning 🔥 that’s one of my favorites after this track.

The main guy once said "if I was an Italian, I'd make songs about The Roman Empire"; but he was Swedish, thus the Viking stuff (after the earliest "Satanist" stuff).
@Morbid Angel is better than Death Blood Fire Death is not Black Metal. Viking Metal is certainly an offshot of Black Metal but is a subgenre with it's own specific. For Viking metal i mean stuff like Enslaved not the Amon Amarth shit of course. With Hammerheart Bathory developed their Viking metal style in a more epic (and less brutal) way.
@Morbid Angel is better than Death read well my post above, i agree with you that Viking metal is an offspring of Black Metal, of course the riffs are similar but if you listen to the first three Bathory album (pure Black Metal) you will find out the difference between black and viking
@Morbid Angel is better than Death As i told you before Hammerheart is a turn to a more epic style of Viking Metal. About the riffs on bfd i repeat that are heavly influenced by BM but is not the same sport. Please listen to; Bathory, The Return and Under The Sign Of The Black Mark and you will understand what i mean.
Thank you. Real reactions. Try "The Lake" from Bathory. He created black metal at 14 years old and epic/viking metal at 17 years old (this album). May he Rest In Peace
Love the enthusiasm! Just wanted to say Big Q was born in Feb of 66 and formed Bathory in March of 83 when he was 17. This album is from 88, when he was 23. Still very impressive though!
If a black/viking metal song evokes the feeling that you're trudging along in an ancient boat in the midst of a long ass voyage at sea, then it's been a well crafted song. As is heard here. Great job dude, glad to see you check it out!

To get the idea of the early sounds (keeping this list short), Venom's black metal, Sodom's Persecution Mania and Celtic Frost's Morbid Tales. And to get the idea what it turned in to: Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, Burzum (a solo by not your friendliest person) - Det Som Engag Var and Darkthrone - A Blaze in The northern sky. Venom is the originator of black metal and thrash metal, you can hear their influence in bands like Carnivore or Impaled Nazarene. They can also be described as Metal Punk and that thing is also present with the other early black metal bands. And Japan has a huge Metal Punk scene. Some black metal bands go for that sound more than the more modern stuff. And I don't even consider the third wave black metal to be really black metal. For a kickass black metal song, try Mysticum - LSD.
To think I first listen to Bathory because somewhere I read that Amon Amarth was soft compared to this. Love this shit, quorton you fucking genius, wrote and played every instrument RIP
It's a concept album, about the whole war/series of battles, I belive the Nords fighting to keep their religion again the flood of the Christians. At least that's the first interpretation i got when i first sat down with it years and years ago. I could be wrong about the details and particulars but point being its a concept album. Each song has to do with the different stages of the war/battles and mental preparation for the invasion is what you listened to in this reaction, then it gets to more detail of the warriors meeting in the field and then the aftermath etc. Its like one big song really hehe.
