I was a little girl playing in the driveway, my dad was working on the car. The man on the radio announced Jim's passing. It was the first time I ever saw my father cry 🌹❣️
One of the greatest singer/songwriters and storytellers of all time, and that's saying something when you consider that in the late 60s through the 70s, you arguably had the greatest collection of singer/songwriters in music history. RIP Jim.
Jim Croce is one of those unforgettable artists. He actually sings alot of great songs. Time In A Bottle and Operator are just a couple more of his greats.
His song, Time In a Bottle, was my class song in 1974. He passed in 1973. Too any musicians died young from either drugs or accidents while being transported to and from gigs. He died in a plane crash in Louisiana.
Yeah, I think we would've gotten some more from him. But, I think people said that he planned on being there for his family and not making music a full time career.
One of my mom's favorite singers. Can still remember the good times on a saturday her getn supper ready, strapping his album in the record player and letn the good times roll:)
I recall Jim telling a story of the basis for this song. The character is based on someone he was in the military with. It reminds me of Big Boy Pete, a song by The Olympics.
I enjoyed your reactions to Jim Croce's "Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown". His biggest hit and a song when played would put All ages on the dance floor. Was lucky to see Jim C. live spring '73 as opening act for Loggins and Messina. Great show, Croce was accompanied by another acoustic musician and played a very entertaining dozen songs. R.I.P.
Love you guys!! You picked every aspect of this song that Jim Croce aimed for. God I miss that man. He had such a vision, such a connect-the-dots song writing ability. Please continue down the Croce train. There are a few stops you've missed.
I'm so glad I could see you both reaction to this to this. My best friend's dad loved Jim Croce and would always play his music on guitar. Great reaction as always.
My dad grew up in Chicago's South Side in the '30s and '40s. It was bad enough' then, that to his dying day he refused to talk about it in front of us kids.
Like every city, it has its parts. ...by the way people talk about Chcago, you'd think it was the most crime ridden city in the county. It's not even in the top 10, probably not even in the top 20.
Bravo! I remember hearing this on one of my friend's 45's in the 70's - that a small record that plays singles :). As others have noted it really is a tragedy that Jim left us so early. You guys are both wonderful reactors. Cheers!
I grew up on Chicago's South Side and lived there all my life including when this song came out. The baddest side of time reputation made us laugh because we knew the reputation was not deserved. The west side actually had the bad reputation for us but I wonder if that was also a myth. Since I've grown up and lived in other places, I've learned that whichever side of town has large pockets of poverty (and majority people of color) will get a bad reputation while where wealthier folks (of whatever color) live will be considered "nice" to outsiders. And FYI, the "east side" of Chicago is Lake Michigan. We lived walking distance from Lake Michigan.
Awesome reaction. A timeless classic! They definitely don't write ballads like this these days! The band Queen wrote a tribute to this called "bring back that Leroy brown."
Cabrini-Green has had a reputation for decades, i am the 6th generation of my family to come from Chicago, I remember in the early 1970s people saying that the Cops won't even go in there... and my friends would say - if you're ever driving thru there, don't stop at the stop signs - implying that in the time it would take you to stop - they would already have stripped your cars wheels - true story, I went home on leave from the Military, flew in around 1:30am, just wanted to get home and hit the rack, driving along - there was a car on the side of the road, I remember thinking "damn, I wouldn't have left that there" by the end of the next block i realized that I know that car, my friends '69 Chevelle, so on the next corner i turned and went around the back way, back to the car, pulled out a block behind the Chevelle and there was a Van pulling away from the front of the car - with stop signs and all on the back way around, it probably took 4 to 5 minutes for me to get back to it, I pulled up behind it to confirm it was my friends car, it was - but now was sitting on blocks, they took the wheels - engine and trans - certain interior parts and the sound system... I thought back to when i was younger and remembered hearing about a Van with a 5 or 6 man crew that could strip a car complete in about 4 minutes, what a crazy time.
I went to the Southside of Chicago all the time in the late 90s/early 2000s all the time for buying things in bulk. I am white and from Southwest Wisconsin. Never had an issue walking anywhere there. Everyone I met was nice and liked me, though at first they all thought I was either legitimately crazy, or a cop. Same deal with Milwaukee. I could walk in areas the locals couldn't. I even brokered a truce between two blocks. I was known as "Longhair", and now everyone I knew personally from both cities are either dead or in prison. Crazy. Guess that is my white privilege. 😂😂😂😂
This song triggers a core memory. I vividly remember my grade 6 public school teacher (Mr. Rudell) busting out a guitar during music class and playing this song. We all had to learn the words. At the time, I thought he was a goof. Years later, I realize Mr. Rudell was a damn LEGEND! I wish I could see him just to thank him for introducing us to this song!
If you liked this song, you would also like Jim Croce's "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" 👍😎 Here's a live version: ua-cam.com/video/FMjzKKcz_ew/v-deo.html
I agree with ChicagoDB on "You Don't Mess Around with Jim." When that song came out, I was 11 years old, and my mom lectured me about the content. A few weeks later, my mom said I really like this Bad Bad Leroy Brown song. I gave her trouble about it for almost 50 years.
@@douglasgann7849 - both are great songs…the amazing part is that Jim was so successful with 2 songs that are so similar 🙂 Jim Croce and Chicago’s great singer/songwriter Steve Goodman were both lost to us far too soon. 😢
If you want some thought provoking lyrics about love / lost - “ operator “ and “ time in a bottle”and my personal favorite “ I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song” 😊
OMG i listed to his album in my basement when i was young. I'd say about over 40 yrs ago so much fun and dancing in my basement . Another artist gone too soon. 😢
We actually did this in a school play back in the 70s... The song is based on a true person. We also did, *Shaft* *KUNGFU FIGHTING, A Tree Grow... Well it was called *SIDEWALK TREES*
Great tune! Love Chicago! Don't listen to all the bad one-sided press! This song was inspired by a guy Jim knew who went AWOL (UA) from the military for many days, and then returned expecting nothing to happen. Jim was the master storyteller and song writer. Sounds like Doris returned Leroy's advances and caused the whole problem. Seen that before.
West side of Chicago (by far) roughest part of Chicago, which has both rough and dangerous and amazingly beautiful and very safe areas on the Southside.
if you're bad and it takes two people to fight you whether you win or lose you're still bad cuz you have to have two people. good song my favorite part is Leroy look like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple of pieces gone

The song that made him a household name. The Lord took him at such an early age. His career was just starting to take off. God Bless.
Don't keep trees at the fricken airfield.
I swear guys.
Every time you show up, it's like running into an old friend.
Thanks for that.
His song, Time In a Bottle, was my class song in 1974. He passed in 1973. Too any musicians died young from either drugs or accidents while being transported to and from gigs. He died in a plane crash in Louisiana.
I loved Time in A Bottle
Great line - "Leroy looked like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple of pieces gone...."
One of the true tragedies of music. We can only imagine how much incredible music he could have given us if he'd lived longer. R.I.P. Mr. Croce.
Yeah, I think we would've gotten some more from him. But, I think people said that he planned on being there for his family and not making music a full time career.
No matter how tough you think you are somebody tougher will eventually come along
There are, I think, few songs that everybody likes, at least a little. This is one of those songs.
Oh Jim!! Lost him way too soon! Still love him and always will.
If I could put Time in a Bottle beautiful song
Love Jim Croce!
Jim Croce is a treasure! Thanks for sharing this one.
Don't Mess Around with Jim.
Another great one.
"Don't mess with Leroy". That's right TNT, but also don't want to mess around with Jim!

Jim Croce was a master lyricist/songwriter. This is one of his fun songs. Highly suggest you check out his more serious stuff.
Leroy got his lunch ate 😂😂😂

I'm Gen X. I say this because I'm a thrash fan and political rap fan. However I do subscribe to other genres. Jim Croce was one of those dudes✊🏻

Leroy Brown was an actual person that Jim Croce knew. They met while serving in the Army together and became friends.
