  • Harbor Freight is coming out with some expensive Cobalt spiral cut Hercules step drills but they have such a terrible grind that they're worse than they standard step drills not recommended . .

IF you run any of them slow and use cutting oil they will stay sharp and last a lot longer.

If you use a step drill slow they will catch way more often.. even if theyre sharp..

I've been using step bits since the mid to late 80's,when they were hard to find and very expensive. We always purchased them at a local electrical supply company. Due to the cost we found it was best to sharpen them up to the point where you no longer could before discarding them. Spiral ground can be sharpened with an air die grinder or dremel and a stone, straight ground can be sharpened with an angle grinder as well, all done with a steady hand. Now days the bits can be found everywhere so cheaply its hardly worth sharpening them.

I'm an electrician, and I use step bits on a daily basis. And have used *ALL* brands of them and have found that Klein & Greenlee make the best ones, they are just *OVER PRICED*.
    👍🏼 GREAT VIDEO BUD !! 👍🏼

Klein bits were very good in the past, but this year we have had three 1 3/8" bits break(the tip). Greenlee are holding up. When drilling TGIs we use Harbor Freight just because the wood fiber grinds up the edge and no matter what brand we use needs to be sharpened often. In the commercial side, Greenlee.

Oh no......your drilling wood with a unibit ? Yes that works, but that with dull it quicker than anything. That's like using a keen pocket knife on cutting cardboard or paper. Never seen anybody use a unibit on a TGI, either a augar bit or paddle bit and for something large a hole saw.

A good step bit can be used on the back side of the hole to debur it. The spiral might make sharpening it later difficult.

I get by with the cheap ones. The sprial on that large Herc looks like it was made with a hand held angle grinder. Thanks for the comparison.

I use The warriors to open up body panel holes and they perform exceptionally well. I’ve got 60-80 holes on 1 bit and still going strong.

Nice factual video even though I don`t have much use for step drill bits I do have a few maybe in the future I will have a shot. At least someone now is telling us what works and what doesn`t!!! Thanks.

I have found the cheap step bits are out of round. I checked on a micrometer. I was making an electronic project panel and even though my pilot holes were straight, the 7/8in holes I cut with the cheap HF bits were not lined up by as must as 1/16 of an inch. If you are doing semi-precision work, I would buy the best step bits. And you won't find those at HF!

used them to drill lots of holes in 1/8 inch flat bar .

Well done video. Can a regular drill do this ? Should the surface around the hole be sealed with anything to prevent rust, etc ?

I agree the grind looks horrible on the Hercules bit... however I believe your results form the drilling portion are misleading... I believe you intentionally held your hand on the thin aluminum plate farther from the hole to be drilled out when you used the Hercules bit so you would "encourage" the result you wanted.. if you don't intend on doing fair testing to back up your opinion then please do no testing... the holes should have been drilled with the sample being supported either by another heavy sheet with a thru hole to allow for the bit to pass into or a block of wood supporting the sheet...

I was at home Depot looking at step drill bits and they are quite expensive. I saw a Klein tools step drill bit for around 70 dollars. I'm probably going to end up going to harbor freight to buy a step drill bit because it will be much cheaper and I don't use a step drill bit very often.

I have been using the warrior's for some time , decided to buy the hercules, Terrible in my opinion , bed frame steel 1/2 inch hole standard drill bit , next Hercules bit next step enlargement , fore-ever . warrior step bit same situation -no problem.

This seems like maybe it was an early adopter problem when they first released these. I got mine late last year (late '22) and mine have perfect cutting edges. No where near the rough looking edges of the ones Catus got.

This whole review is flawed. There was no comparison between different types of metal. No comparison with thicker thicker gauge metal. He didn't use any lubricant. Unfortunately this man has the same aditude a lot of people do about Harbor Freight; it's cheap so it must be inferior and that's just not the case.

I usually go with higher quality but things like unitbits i can't justify 80$ for a bit that cuts a small hole. Same thing with swage tools I ain't spending 600$ for the hilmor its a freaking copper tube expander 300$ is too much for something that slightly expands copper.

The drill that doesn't have steps is a tapered reamer not a drill. Gets the job done either way.

HF has always been a little hit or miss - I have quite a few of their tools, but I think you have to look before you leap with them, as you can get anything from a screamin' deal to a complete waste of money off their shelves. I've rarely been disappointed if I looked at the item first, but since I don't make it to HF that often lately, I've used your assesments before ordering online, and you've never steered me wrong! I appreciate your reviews (although I suspect if my wife realized how much money I've spent because of them...)
I got a set of cheapo cobalt step drills on Amazon with 5 bits in it for $22. I haven't used them enough to comment on durability, but they were sharp when I got them. Straight flute, so maybe that's easier to sharpen, but HF isn't the only source for inexpensive tools.

I have had those Warrior and I love them. What ever you do don't get their #2 philips bit for $4/10 pc. They suck so bad, all of their 1/4 phil,ip bits are dog ship. I once went through 50 bit over 200 screws in one weekend back in 2017 because they keep breaking on me. I switched to Milkwaulkee for 3x the price, I managed to get 3 per 200 screws. So technically speaking Milkwaulkee was cheaper. Alot cheaper

Drilling one hole on paper thin aluminum isn't much of a review or comparison. If you have half a brain you can sharpen these bits as needed, so if your drilling lots of holes you would proably be better off with the cobalt.

      @CatusMaximus  4 роки тому +5

Who wants to spend 40 bucks on a set of Step drills that you have to sharpen when you get home.
Yes the performance of the Cobalt itself would be good but pointless if it's so dull I think if you bought a Bosch or a Milwaukee and it was that dull you would immediately be returning it
