The purpose of the video is to present what the life of a "regular" person in this time period would have looked like. The story is not really important..it's more like a layout to explain little everyday stuff that would have happened around the time.

I love these "A day in a life" series! I also imagine that they are all the same soul. Living a life in one episode, then re-incarnating in the next video. Well, except this one (coz both were during the ancient rome)
I funny how so many people comment about how young they are but in Rome at the time the average life span was 35 years. So if you think about it 15 is about her half her life.
You are incorrect. 35 is the average, due to high infant and child mortality. If you lived past 10 you could easily live into your 50s and beyond. 15 is only young by today's standards, standards that have only come about in the past half a century.
Those numbers are misleading. People from the upper classes on any age could be confident of living into old age, outside of women dying in childbirth or men dying in war. The averages encompass people whose lives were hell on earth. That brings the numbers way down.

Lucius just walks into his house in a good mood thinking on how great his night was, just to see his slaves lined up, a smashed dish, and an overeager undertaker.
Unfortunately, this video is replete with modern stereotypes. 1. Women's names could vary somewhat: Domitia, Domitilla, Domitiana. Additionally, upon marriage they could add the genitive of their husband's cognomen e.g. "Domitia Phileti." That's basically what we do today. 2. Not EVERYTHING that we have written by the Romans was written by men (Footnote 2). 3. Nude co-sex bathing is now thought to have occurred through most of the history of Rome. (Footnote 3) 4. Women could indeed go into the Forum....How else would they shop at the markets there?...A huge piece of the Pompeiian Forum was donated by a business-WOman. 5. Women did indeed exercise a role in public--even political--life, even though it was thru the men she could influence via campaign advertisements, dinners, etc. Why only thru men? Because they were the top-members of the social units. In a non-electronic society, social units (families/estates) have representation--thru their top member--not direct voting. Also voting this early was an expression of military (exclusively male) & land-owning (mostly male) clout. 6. Women weren't voiceless over these mores: History records certain patrician women slapping other women for getting out of line (e.g. Footnote 6). 7. I've been in the top of the Colosseum. You're close to the fighting. Its back row is twice as close as the Ohio State Football stadium's. Now for what's not said, but implied: 8. YOU JUST DON'T SEE ANCIENT WOMEN ANYWHERE AGITATING FOR POLITICAL RIGHTS!!!...To imply that they should've (based on our modern context) is to totally put made-up words into their mouths. Indeed, voting In Rome was so rare & often so insignificant in the things voted for, that most males didn't have the right, and even when they did they rarely travelled to Rome to exercise it. Unfortunately this video is a little generalising in terms of information. The title should probably have been "four YOUNG sisters" as it fails to recognise some of the liberties of women during ancient rome. Though I'm not entirely sure if they spanned through to the the installation of emperors, Roman women were allowed to work and own their own businesses as well as become matrons (female patrons). Compared to other ancient cultures, such as the athenians, Romans were actually quite progressive in their own ways. Though it is true that women were not allowed to hold political power in the senate.
lol, ok dude. Sure, we've definitely made progress but to claim sexism is over is just naive IMO. We inherited this shit in our cultural DNA from Rome. We're still slowly getting over it.
Our history is vast and amazing... I can't imagine how the weather and daily life I would be used to would be like in that time. Getting used to seeing these outfits, hearing the old language... living the society's ideologies...
For the record, these are the Domitii en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domitia_(gens) A very prominent Roman noble family of plebeian origin. They mostly had red hair, and often wore beards. Many of their family members were nicknamed "redbeard" (ahenobarbus, literally "bronze beard") en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahenobarbus
Okay... I was more talking about the fact that women were basically shut away from sight for the whole day and that they were married off at such young ages? If you want me to start a fight over your irrelevant and underhanded insults then you're not getting one?? Have fun trolling.
geeze can you imagine a 4th or 5th grader walking around in all those jewels? or a 6th or 7th grader getting married? wth that is messed up. especially the part where the 17 yr old was to marry a SEVEN yr old. Rome guys. Rome.
+Sami R. The age of adulthood concept that you think of is pretty new(started in the 1800s) and not uniformly applied(even in the US age of consent varies from state to state). Being an adult used to mean having started puberty and who a girl married was decided by the father for political and financial reasons years in advance but wouldn't happen until she became an adult(got her first visit from aunt flow).
IT WAS A VERY VERY RARE GLASS NOT JUST A COMMON HOUSE HOLD ITEM! During this time glass was just being made and only the richest could afford the glass glasses. So yes dropping a glass glass was punishable by death.
Very educational and fun animation. Social Studies and History teachers should definitely show this in Elementary and/or Middle School classrooms. I am sure not all daughters would have had the same name (as that would have been very confusing). Younger Domitia's sisters could/would have names such as Marcella, Cornelia and/or even Helena. Ancient Rome no doubt had to be one of the worst societies and times to have been a woman then there has ever been in human history. It is animations like this that are good for introducing and getting children into history. I look forward to watching the rest of Ted's videos.
6:01 really gladiator fights in real life would not have any blood or guts getting spilled and would literally be stopped before somebody got scratched because fighters were relatively expensive

***** Thracians are the cousins of Greeks, and Dacians. Romanians [me] are Dacians, which were the most peaceful and brightest ones unlike their Thracian cousins. Thracians even betrayed the Dacians at one point, so yeah. Just google It to get a good hindsight on it.
I’ve been coming back to this video
Every few months I’ve seen it a ton of times but I never get bored of it
Much thanks to Mr. Laurence and the TEDeD animators for this and the boys' video. I'm using it to teach my Korean students about Roman history, and the simple style, the focus on youth, and the closed captions is absolutely perfect for my needs.
ive watched two of these videos already and the cliff hangers really piss me off
What cliff hangers?
Like the one about the teenage boy in one video and if he'll survive the reign of terror of a new emperor or this one where what will happen with the betrothal if it'll go well
Well that cliff hanger isn't really important to the four sisters. We know it's a slave, it doesn't matter which one
The purpose of the video is to present what the life of a "regular" person in this time period would have looked like. The story is not really important..it's more like a layout to explain little everyday stuff that would have happened around the time.
Aqua Leaf
This channel is what keeps me up at night, the animations are fabulous and these stories, riddles and lessons are so fascinating
I have no idea what I'm watching
victoneter that's what real "mentally handicapped" people think... studies found this......

Show me these studies then. You really do seem pretty stupid if you don't even understand this video
Also doesn't the fact that you're accusing me of being mentally handicapped for accusing you of being mentally handicapped mean that you're also mentally handicapped because you just accused me of being mentally handicapped?
My God!! :D You have way too much free time dude. Get a life...

Thank you so much for this series! Everyday life of other eras has always been my favorite subject of history, and I always thought that there was so little educative material on that.
I watched this back in 6th grade, now that I take Latin as a language in high school it makes so much more sense
***** hm well we are getting into the life of a female girl and you know ....
+Cat Goddess☄ wth is a female girl?
+Daniel Muriungi Maybe someone who is biologically female and identifies her gender as a girl? It's a little specific, but it could be a possibility... lol
+AronShun i am in sixth grade and I still understand
+Cat Goddess☄ WHaaaaat!! You have latin as a language in high school? No fair! We only have French, German and Spanish!!!! Maybe because I'm in 7th grade.
this is the life of rich Roman women
Marie Millien ...And?
+Marie Millien Read the description for once.
+Christian Mills it isn't about normal people. just rich people.
+MonarchTherapsids Inostran Most of the recorded history we have was written by the wealthy, literate population, and thus thats what we have for information.
makes sense.
This is really a nice way to show history. Well done.
everyone wants to know this: who broke the pot?
Probably Domitia.
no it wasn't Domitia it was Domitia
I thought it was going to be a riddle
haruhi ??
So did I! That's why I clicked on the video, I didn't get a riddle, but I just got smarter
The animation is great, the three sisters are adorable :) Wish there are more stories about them and other cultures. It's entertaining and quite educational
I love these "A day in a life" series!
I also imagine that they are all the same soul. Living a life in one episode, then re-incarnating in the next video. Well, except this one (coz both were during the ancient rome)
The girls' names reminds me of the Simpsons. "There is Bart, Girl Bart, and the Baby."

Sheez... Just by watching this it makes me scared to just think about Roman times..
Was anyone else waiting for a happy fairy tale ending that spared the slaves their punishment?
Slavery knows no happy endings.

Wow roman life sounds so fun, all I do I stare at a glowing rectangle for 15 hrs a day
Only 15? I do that for like 20! Jk
I only do that during the middle of the summer

David Rudmin TL:DR
David Rudmin Well said and well argued its always good to see political correctness put in its place.
Good response. This video made many generalizations.
+David Rudmin These are the rich women of rome. Even if it's not illegal, it would be considered unbecoming for them to do so
+RegentofSparta I agree with the first two points, but too much of anything (Including PC) is always bad.
dad: names all his children after himself
dad: can’t tell children apart
him: *surprised roman pikachu face*
Jeez. Another day, another thing learned about ancient Rome, another realization about how deep and virulent Roman misogyny was.
+nfinn42
Which is why we fixed it in today's society.
lol, ok dude. Sure, we've definitely made progress but to claim sexism is over is just naive IMO. We inherited this shit in our cultural DNA from Rome. We're still slowly getting over it.
nfinn42
Idk... I'm not experiencing it, so it can't be real.
+Scawsome Well, are you a dude?
It was the story of a rich family , what about poor people
Slaves and poor people could not/could not afford to write or to be written about.
Oh! what a new fact as if I don't know.
pritisha Kundu If nobody wrote about them than nobody is really sure how they lived, smart ass.
Jesus Christ, don't try to act like you're so incredibly smart when you're not apparently.

You forgot the best part: the emperor ordered to smash all the dishes in the house in retaliation.
i would love to see you do a daily life in ancient egypt vid like this. :D
Polio's servant from what I was told in Latin class was pushed into the eel pond, but he was able to get out and crawl to the emperor to ask for help.
Our history is vast and amazing... I can't imagine how the weather and daily life I would be used to would be like in that time. Getting used to seeing these outfits, hearing the old language... living the society's ideologies...
small detail, daughters in Rome were given ordinals not numerals. it would be Domitia first second third etc
thank you for making this free to the general public

For the record, these are the Domitii
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domitia_(gens)
A very prominent Roman noble family of plebeian origin. They mostly had red hair, and often wore beards. Many of their family members were nicknamed "redbeard" (ahenobarbus, literally "bronze beard")
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahenobarbus
They were able to write on the pillars without getting in trouble, I don't understand that. Even when they were in public.
That life of a girl sounds really dull and kind of repetitive. I don't think I could survive in Ancient Rome...
Me either lolz
Okay... I was more talking about the fact that women were basically shut away from sight for the whole day and that they were married off at such young ages?

+MyDiamond99 can you drive ?
geeze can you imagine a 4th or 5th grader walking around in all those jewels? or a 6th or 7th grader getting married? wth that is messed up. especially the part where the 17 yr old was to marry a SEVEN yr old. Rome guys. Rome.
In a a lot of years though
Or when a fifteen year old getting pregnant was acceptable, my how times have changed XD
NobodyImportant o ok then
+NobodyImportant A female's 1st period does NOT make her an "adult". Why do you think half the girls died in childbirth at that time?
Wish there was such a thing as a time machine to see the real thing! Human history is fascinating, tragic and inspiring all at once
IT WAS A VERY VERY RARE GLASS NOT JUST A COMMON HOUSE HOLD ITEM! During this time glass was just being made and only the richest could afford the glass glasses. So yes dropping a glass glass was punishable by death.
yeah it was but the real story was that a glass not a clay pot was broken.
+heyitslill I watch the history channel every day.
+heyitslill my point is that they got the story wrong and back then just breaking a glass was punishable by death because glasses were so rare.
sha bay oh god I wouldn't live long. I'm a clumsy ox.
Livi Joy lol well u definitely wouldn't make it as a servant at least.
Can u do perspective of a slave?
+Arina Obuchova sure, watch Spartacus :)
+Arina Obuchova shit sucks?
+Zamolxes77 There's Spartacus, but what about other slaves?
+Aja Donna Yeah, slaves and poor people must have consisted a way bigger chunk of society than the lucky few who were well-to-do.
+ymyr1 Yeah but they probably couldn't write so their perspective is therfore not as explicitly traceable as those rich mofos
Very entertaining as well as educational. Very interesting perspective. We tend to overlook this when studying ancient Rome and the like.
jokes aside, the misogyny which must have caused them to name all their daughters the same name is kind of depressing
Its an honor to hold the same name. They werent misogynist, they loved their women and knew how to keep them safe from themsleves. See the destructive attitudes and behaviours of most modern women.
Your modern perspective is the real misogyny.
This video is so interesting!
Are there any more videos in this series? There's so many cliffhangers!

it's not a riddle, it's a short documentary picturing the life in a day of four sisters in ancient rome.
