Man, you are one of the best player/teachers out there today. I love your no-nonsense approach to drumming / music topics and I learn something every time I watch your videos. A couple of things I used to get my students to do was: 1. Listen to the great keyboard players in jazz, and the rhythms they use to comp (play chords) and mimic that. 2. Sing the tune in your head and accent off kicks in the melody. Don't do it the same every time through the tune - vary the rhythms. You will find you start to hook up with what the other players are doing rhythmically if you have the tune in your head.

I love your lessons! I've been a percussionist for decades but my drum kit playing is rudimentary. I like seeing a lesson that gives me something solid to do without treating me like a beginner!
Your jazz videos (and all your videos, for that matter) are excellent. They focus more on flow and creativity, rather strictly adhering to the standard ride pattern and quarter note pulse on the kick that so many videos focus on. I think it’s important to practice the ride cymbal pattern to get it as clean as possible and to allow for full left hand independence while maintaining that, but I think it’s more important to think in terms of the melody and accents and phrases. I’m still very much a beginner with jazz drumming, but I feel like my progress was delayed initially by focusing strictly on the ride pattern and comping/independence exercises. It was great for developing independence, but what I was playing didn’t sound very musical. Your videos have helped to change that. Keep up the great work. It’s highly valued by so many people, and helps make the world a better place.

It's easy to get frustrated when you're just starting working on this subtle style, especially when you grew up in a non-swing environment. I picked up a little exercise from you last night that I really like where you play a bar or two of triplets and then a bar or two of single paradiddles. It is a great exercise for your hands. Keep going. Your lessons are teaching many drummers how to get better.

Yo, Homes, I am 70, been playing for 60 years but I have onlybeen playing Bop for 5 yrs. I was all R&R, Funk and Hard R&B drumming until I was asked to Join a Jazz band. Been listening to Buddy, Blakey and Max since I was 10 as a Fan. This lesson is perfect for us. In fact I see in the comments that there are several Old Vets that are learning from you. Hi Bob Brown - meet Owen Brown. My greatest love is early Delta blues & maybe Texas Blues together with big rock anthems. But I was into Miles Davis & Billy Cobb & began playing some blues - but I was stiff & square as you described. I wanted to drive it forward but just didn't know how or what I should be practicing. I did a part course in basic jazz playing with Stephen Taylor before I pinned down what was the most useful to me & that took me to a drum techniques course & now am doing a full on Rock drumming course. But what you have shown here is great & I am going to fit that in to my schedule for sure. I followed your No1 module on soloing and hope to pursue those as the year progresses. Had been avoiding the downbeats, but the accent/push exercise will really take the command and feel to a new level despite my being a 67 year old fart. Thanks man! Just pushed the like and subscribe buttons.
Your videos are excellent. I'm been playing drums for many years, and now am starting a jazz combo. The jazz player and keyboard player have studied jazz in college, so I've got some catching up to do -- learning the lingo "playing the head", comping, etc.; and of course learning how to not play so "square", and learning the "Real Book Standards". Thanks for breaking it down, I'll be checking out your other videos. Hopefully, there's something there about bossa rhythms. That rhythm seems to be quite prevalent to jazz tunes as well.
Funny you mention a square. Rock music has the four heavy beats like the corners of a square. No matter where you are within the measure, you can always “catch up” when finding one of the corners. I like to think of playing jazz much like a circle. It’s a continuous flow where you can get lost or thrown off of the circle. It’s much more noticeable and also harder to get back in. Great video.
Ei Rob, thanks for your openess, sharing with us one (of many!) points of view: a bar or two before Ton hit, you change the LH grip. Is that a natural body prep for the incoming hit? Did you notice, and more importat, Did you mean tô do it?

I never took the time to actually put effort into trying to learn some jazz, because I never understood the concept behind it, until now. If u can ever wrap your mind around jazz, it is amazing for your playing abilities all around. Still though, it doesn't come easy for me, definitely feel at times I don't have enough limbs, or wonder how I ever learned to walk. Lol, jazz is a mindfuck, for me anyway.
Hey Rob. Just discovered this tutorial too. Have tried to play a bit of jazz (my dad is a pro jazz drummer here in the UK), but I kinda struggle a little. I am looking at your snare and you are just tickling it really gently. So smooth. I suppose I need go back to basics and start playing uber soft? I've noticed your "buzz" strokes on the snare as well. My spang-a-lang on the ride is good (thanks to you). I also try and play the kick soft, but it is really hard. Most of the time it comes through really quite loud when I am still playing as soft as I can. Maybe I need to feather it and play heel down?
