My husband was never a Duran Duran fan until I took him to one of their concerts. Maybe 16-18 years ago-the tour with all original members, including Andy Taylor. Anyway, he walked away saying how that concert changed his tune about them as a band and how they were serious legit musicians. He said it was one of the best concerts he had been to. And he has been to probably 500+ concerts.
Rio is still one of the most, if not the most complicated basslines out there. A friend of mine who plays bass once said "Oh it's not THAT hard!" He then went to play it to show me and effed up like 5 seconds in. LOL!!
"For the time?" lol -- It was alleged they didn't write their songs, too. And I thought they'd suck in concert, you know must be a studio band, nope they were amazing.
Congrats to Duran Duran on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2022! Please guys - You have got to listen to their 90s comeback hit “Ordinary World”. Beautiful

Being a 20-something in the '80s wasn't bad, either. In fact, being a kid in the '60s, a teen in the '70s, a 20-something in the '80s, and I would even add a 30-something in the '90s was the best of all worlds.
Jay & Amber can't believe you guys didn't notice the killer bass playing by John Taylor. Also that sound you were digging is Nick Rhoades on keyboard/synth.
when you first listen to a DD song, especially off of Rio, it can be next to impossible for the brain to take it all in. I can understand focusing on one thing at a time. Next listen they will catch that crazy bass, maybe after that they will appreciate that drum beat, which is not simple. We knew that Amber would get taken away by that sax tho. lol

Nice information. Just to be accurate you are referring to the US charts since UA-cam's audience has no boundaries. In the UK Duran Duran had 33 charted singles. In the U.S., Duran Duran actually had 21 charted singles and not 22. Their last Billboard Hot 100 single to chart was in 2004 with (Reach Up For The) Sunrise at #89. To be on the success side of songs and the Billboard charts, a band wants to at least hit the Top 40. Duran Duran had 14 Top 40 tracks in the US. Their last Top 40 US release was Come Undone in 1993, which peaked at #7. Honorable mention would have been the following release, Too Much Information, which peaked at #45 also released in 1993. Duran Duran broke in the United States on the release of Hungry Like The Wolf, which radio stations refused to play during the first two attempts of the songs release. Nothing new since that was the take on Duran Duran's debut album in the US. Duran Duran was more of a college radio and dance club band with a fringe audience at the beginning in America (1981). HLTW was released three separate times in the US before reaching #3 in 1983. What helped Duran Duran in the radio market was David Kerschenbaum remixing songs made for the Carnival EP released in September of 1982. The RIO album was released in the US in May of 1982 along with HLTW. Capitol Records, (EMI Records subsidiary) the American label responsible for DD in the US, re-released the Rio album in November 1982. The US re-release of RIO added many of the remixed Kerschenbaum tracks. Kerschenbaum emphasized the remixes with more guitar and brought the rhythm section more so to the forefront to make the tracks more dance-able, this caught on with radio making HLTW more attractive to radio programmers. Before Duran Duran caught on to Top 40 radio in the US, you could hear them on college radio and especially on New Wave Music radio stations such as WLIR (Long Island), KROQ (Los Angeles) and KYYX (Seattle). Duran Duran nearly had three consecutive #1 songs in the US. The first #1 was The Reflex in the summer of 1984 and the second #1 (and the first James Bond track ever to reach #1) was A View To A Kill. However, in between these two tracks was The Wild Boys which peaked at #2. The track entered the #2 position behind Daryl Hall & John Oates #1 single, Out Of Touch in December 1984. The Wild Boys was then leapfrogged by Madonna's Like A Virgin which remained the #1 song for six consecutive weeks. The Wild Boys kept its #2 slot behind Like A Virgin for three more weeks before falling to #3. That's a total of 4 weeks at #2 behind two artists. Any other week, The Wild Boys would have been a #1 single. Nile Rodgers helped Duran Duran get to the #2 position by producing The Wild Boys. He also kept Duran Duran from the #1 position by producing Madonna's Like A Virgin.
J & Amber, you'll love their"New Moon On Monday" and "Girls On Film" !!! Very big band in the 80's and into the 90s! edit-they will go into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.

You guys have been doing SO MANY early 80s jams... KEEP IT UP! Duran Duran was so huge in the early days of MTV, it's so hard to describe. Check out "Girls on Film", "New Moon On Monday", "Ordinary World".... or, if you want to check out something BRAND NEW, do "Anniversary", from their 2021 album marking their four decades as a band. In my opinion this is the greatest Duran Duran song ever. Every member brought their absolute best on this one and there's nothing out of place or excessive in this song. Just AMAZING!!
U2 wasnt really as big until after 1985. Duran Duran was bigger from 1982-85. Even Bob Geldof chose the band first before others for the Band Aid song, cause they were the biggest band in the world in 1984.
Duran Duran was kind of the big group of the mid-eighties, heard everywhere. Their first big hit in the US was "Hungry Like the Wolf" from 1982, but my favorite song of theirs was "Planet Earth" from 1981.
Duran Duran's bass player John Taylor and guitar player Andy Taylor were also in Power Station who you recently reviewed. DD was their main band and PS was a side project
The great Sax solo was by a gent named Andy Hamilton. He wasn’t a member of DD , but a studio and touring musician. He played with many other artists , Elton John , Paul McCartney , David Bowie to name a few.
This is one of those songs that even forty years after the fact make you remember where you were and what you were doing when it was getting heavy airplay. It's very evocative of 1982 and early '83 and makes me "homesick" for the '80s.
This is my favorite song by them and I was a full on Duranie back in the day. Upbeat tempo songs "Wild Boys", "The Reflex", "View To A Kill", and "Girls On Film" are a few of their big hits. Although you really shouldn't miss "Save A Prayer" its such a beautiful ballad. Just a heads up the video for Girls On Film is very risqué.
I absolutely love how you guys refer to this as having a futuristic sort of sound. Imagine how we felt hearing this nearly 40 years ago!! They were SO ahead of their time.
Never seen you kids jam before. I was a teen when this came out and they were my top band I'm used to your movie reactions, so this put a smile on my face watching you react!
My favorite Duran Duran songs are "Wild Boys" "Save a Prayer" and "Cracks in the Pavement". Wild Boys was their best video. If you liked Rio, you'll love Wild Boys!
Wild Boys was the one where Simon nearly drowned, as the windmill mechanism he was tied to got stuck when his head was underwater. This actually left in the video. I remember that appearing in the news at the time.
I was obsessed with Duran Duran growing up I mean obsessed posters all over my room, and John Taylor was supposed to be my husband. I think he forgot that part! My real husband laughs at me lol
If I could only pick one song and one video to represent the 80's, this would be it. This video was MTV and everything the medium had to offer at the time. This video showed what a visual element could add to a song, and the band just looked like they were having an amazing time being there and doing something that was so new. One of the best videos ever made, hands down, thanks for sharing.
Never got to see Duran Duran live but Rosemont was a staple of my concert experiences. Alpine Valley, World Music Theater, Poplar Creek, Ravinia, Vic Theater, The Aragon, and Thirty Whale had me rocking endlessly.
The song is not about a woman, but Duran's first impressions of America in their 1981 tour of the US. The 'Rio' album cover is iconic as it was painted by Patrick Nagel, I got into his work from the album cover. I also saw them in 1984 at their height.
Their lush and exotic videos often overshadowed just how truly talented they really are. Brilliant lyrics and great musicianship have kept them relevant for decades.
The album cover art for this album is peak 80s...so cool. This is my favorite Duran Duran tune and the bass line is yummy. In fact, you can watch John Taylor on UA-cam doing a bass tutorial for this song.
Finally... RIO! :) Thank you so much for reacting to this song/video. John Taylor is perhaps the greatest bass player still touring the world today. He should be top 5 all time greatest bass players in the rock and roll era. Duran Duran will be in Fort Worth Texas this August, still playing 40 years after this video was released! Hard to believe it's already been 40 years since I first watched this video as a young teen. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will now have Duran Duran gracing their hall later this fall!
RIO!!! The greatest Bass line ever written. This group was pretty damn good. Not exactly my type of music back in the day, but they kept popping out hit after hit.
Love you guys. Duran Duran ruled the mid 80s, my high school years. Lucky eh? Their first album was a slower tempo but “girls on film” and “Something I should know” showed glimpses of future greatness. First time I heard Rio, the next uptempo album, I was hooked. There are a few slower songs like “save a prayer” that you should check out, high quality, sticks with you.
I’m a lifetime Duranie! I love Rio, the song, the video, and the amazing 1982 album, that I own In vinyl! I am so excited that my guys are being inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame this year, 2022! Duran Duran was the best of the eighties New Wave/New Romantic era and they are still touring and making new music!! Some more hits to check out are Wild Boys, New Moon on Monday, Union of the Snake, Notorious, I Don’t Want Your Love, and many more! Always play the videos for Duran Duran because they are always fun!❤️❤️
Boy Band = A group of "musicians" who rarely play their own instruments, consisting purely of reasonably attractive males who appeal to girls ages 10-14. This term does not apply to all bands that are comprised solely of males. It is used in reference to a specific genre of music artists who perform for a pre-teen audience in a mainstream pop/rock style.
To refer to Duran Duran as a “boy band” with or without quotations is preposterous! These guys are the real deal, not only do they play their own instruments but they are top notch musicians and can actually harmonize better than any boy band you can name! 2. They’ve already reacted to The Reflex.
One of my all-time favorite bands. Sooooo many hit songs. Duran Duran is posh and this song is luxurious. It just looks and feels so good. The sax is magic. I hope you do more songs. I recommend "The Reflex," "Wild Boys," "Union of the Snake," "A View to A Kill," and "Is There Something I Should Know?" Yeah, just a few. LOL
HUGE HUGE hit for "Duran Duran", who were at the forefront of the "New Wave" music that came after "Punk". Also, congrats 👏 to them for being inducted into the "Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame 2022. 🇬🇧🎵🎙

My brother had the album. Happened to have a scratch and would skip to repeat "Planet Earth" ad infinitum.
Kind of? They were the biggest group in 1985 Bob Gelfof states there would have been no Live Aid if Duran Duran did not participate.
This is the iconic video of the 80s. So perfect!
These are my boys....especially Simon. I fell in love immediately back then. I love them still.
Duran Duran's bass player John Taylor and guitar player Andy Taylor were also in Power Station who you recently reviewed. DD was their main band and PS was a side project
Roger Taylor was also involved with The Power Station as well as the Arcadia project with Nick Rhodes and Simon Le Bon.
The great Sax solo was by a gent named Andy Hamilton. He wasn’t a member of DD , but a studio and touring musician. He played with many other artists , Elton John , Paul McCartney , David Bowie to name a few.
He was in Orchestral Manuevers in the Dark i believe
This is one of those songs that even forty years after the fact make you remember where you were and what you were doing when it was getting heavy airplay. It's very evocative of 1982 and early '83 and makes me "homesick" for the '80s.
What’s moving you is the sick bass playing!! John Taylor is next level. 🤯🤯
The use of color, the blues, pinks, corals and more captures the whole vibe of the early-to-mid 1980's in so many ways.
You're still a Duranie in my heart.
They have been my favorite since 1982. I'm a hard core Durranie. That's why they won highest voted band this year in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ❤
Video was shot in Antigua
In 1982.
Wild Boys is favorite DD song
John Taylor on the bass is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
That baseline was intense!
Best glamour band of the 80s and 90s!
My 2 favorite Duran Duran songs are "Wild Boys" and "Union of the Snake"
❤ just saw them sept 6 i am 55 and have loved them since i was 14
DD's bassist is a freaking badass. Most underrated element of this group.
One of the best videos ever made, hands down, thanks for sharing.
no way this defined the 80s more than MJ's Thriller video.
The 80's were a magical time!
I was 10 when this song came out...I miss the 80's....Sending out good vibes to everyone!!!!
This was big. I was in HS when it came out. There was such a big deal about at the time. Good memories.
Loved seeing them at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago in 1984. What a fun concert that was. Planet Earth and Girls On Film both bangers.
Never got to see Duran Duran live but Rosemont was a staple of my concert experiences. Alpine Valley, World Music Theater, Poplar Creek, Ravinia, Vic Theater, The Aragon, and Thirty Whale had me rocking endlessly.
Yes! Planet Earth and Girls on Film both rockin.
I attended the same school as the drummer from Duran Duran.
One of the all time greats...great bass line, clever lyrics.
The song is not about a woman, but Duran's first impressions of America in their 1981 tour of the US. The 'Rio' album cover is iconic as it was painted by Patrick Nagel, I got into his work from the album cover. I also saw them in 1984 at their height.
That bass line is insane
Their lush and exotic videos often overshadowed just how truly talented they really are. Brilliant lyrics and great musicianship have kept them relevant for decades.
My favorite Duran Duran song! Favorite video too! Thanks!!
I still can't believe I never seen this group perform in concert in their prime, Still kicking my butt for that. And God I miss the damn 80's.
NOTORIOUS
The album cover art for this album is peak 80s...so cool. This is my favorite Duran Duran tune and the bass line is yummy. In fact, you can watch John Taylor on UA-cam doing a bass tutorial for this song.
Yes! He does an excellent tutorial! Such a great guy and an excellent musician!
Duran Duran had some criminally underrated musicians. John Taylor in particular gives a master class in bass playing.
Finally...
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️My FAVORITE Duran Duran song!!! (and that says A LOT bc I LOVE all of their songs so much).
I never noticed how much the Bass rips in this song. 🎸
It's one of the most fun Basslines to play
That xylophone sound you mentioned is a synth set on arpeggio mode.
Give Ordinary World a listen.Beautiful song!!
Crazy to think this was 40 years ago
It's time for Save a Prayer, one of the most beautiful songs ever.
Rio was the very first cassette tape I bought. I was in my early teens. I was in love with Duran Duran back then.
Crazy crazy good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was the first Duran Duran song I ever heard. I feel so old remembering when the video first premiered on MTV.
Bass underrated again. Bass player is killing it during this song especially during sax solo.
Duran Duran - what a great 1980s "boy band". Another upbeat song of theirs is The Reflex. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
They did a reaction video for the Reflex. Check it out. Fun!
@@jen_alanfromchicago53 Pfffttt . . . ! There's a reason I put quotation marks around the term. Lighten up!
@@MindsetMom Oh well, can't watch them all!
To refer to Duran Duran as a “boy band” with or without quotations is preposterous! These guys are the real deal, not only do they play their own instruments but they are top notch musicians and can actually harmonize better than any boy band you can name! 2. They’ve already reacted to The Reflex.
The 80s RULE... I am so blessed growing up as a young teenager in the 80s..
Same.
My teen years in a Nutshell!!! 😁😉👍
LOL
PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME NOW... 😂
Some more Duran Duran suggestions: New Moon on Monday, Wild Boys, Union of the Snake, Notorious, and Save a Prayer
Love Duran Duran save a prayer is a song u should hear😊
Amber I love that you said artistic because it was very artistic
HUGE HUGE hit for "Duran Duran", who were at the forefront of the "New Wave" music that came after "Punk". Also, congrats 👏 to them for being inducted into the "Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame 2022. 🇬🇧🎵🎙
Girls On Film! At the time, MTV would only play the video late at night because it was considered so risque
I suggest these Duran Duran songs: Planet Earth, Girls On Film & Is There Something I Should Know
Yes to the above, BUT regarding Girls On Film, audio version only, the video version is not family-safe, if you know what I mean…
