What I appreciate is that Lyle not only explains whats right or whats wrong he shows you with 4k video. No BS No Scripts. He just points out Exactly what a high quality tech observes while servicing.
For the price the owner paid for this amp, I'd expect it to have a high level of quality. $2000 can get you something really nice. A Tone King, a Carr, a used Silverface Princeton Reverb.
I own a VSA 35SC top and matching 1x12 cabinet and its the best sounding amp I have ever owned/played. I was in a shop where I could play lots of boutique amps from lots of brands. The 35SC with that VSA-cabinet (Warehouse G12c/s) was a complete match. Huge sound. After 6 years and lot of use it started making ghost sounds. It went to 3 different amp techs. The first one found lose solder-balls and cut of capacitor-legs flying around in the chassis. The problem was not solved. The second one found forgotten solder-joints. Cables were tightened around but were not soldered. The problems stayed. The third tech found 3 microphonic orange drops and a bad tube and changed them. Also he found dangerous long chassis-screws near critical parts, where easily dc could have jumped over. He fixed a lot of stuff. The amp is‘ fine again. The amps noisefloor went little louder during its repairs. But its much less than any new Fender has. Because of its single channel ptp design its easy to service and so most problems are easy to fix. So: you are right. It’s a shame to find build issues in a great concept like this. But as a musician the amp does what I dreamed of, sounds wonderful, has cool features (dark/bright mode, bypassable trem, reverb with dwell pot…) and with a good tech it gets even better over time. As any old fender amp needs a good tech from time to time.
I have been praying for you. Get well Sir. I missed you and your wittiness. I will say a prayer for your daughter. I’m glad to hear all is right again.
Interesting video but I am surprised by the quality issues encountered. I'm seeing all kinds of negative comments directed at the brand/builder in this thread, so in his defence I will say that I ordered a VS15 from the builder in 2020. It's great, quiet as a mouse - zero hum - versatile, great cleans, lush trem, deep reverb, takes pedals well, and priced competitively versus other builders in the space. I'm very happy with the purchase. Maybe this amp was a dud, but that was not my experience with VS.
Everything he mentioned other than the backwards diode would probably apply to all of their amps. He just didn't think that it was built well. he also doesn't believe that the fenders are built well either, but they sound good and I'm sure your amp does too doesn't necessarily mean it's well built though.
I can’t speak to that Amp or even if that’s my chassis in it but I do know that Rick Hayes has been building Amps (and unlike most amp manufacturers paying his bill) as Vintage Sound since the mid 90s..shit I’ve been making chassis for him for 10 years and that’s after I think maybe Dan Boul recommended us? But I suspect something fishy about that amp. It doesn’t make any sense to send it to you when he’s geographically not that far from where you are so you would think they would just send it to him in the first place. Also, Rick is kind of a legend when it comes to fender stuff at least out here on the West Coast he is so those dumb mistakes don’t seem to make any sense. Just my two cents who knows great video either way.
Lyle, thank you for your help with this amp and the Vox. The AC30 you fixed up for me is better than it's ever been, and I'm back to playing with a big grin on my face. The minute I fired it up I said, "There's the sound!" And thanks to you we now know what's under the hood of Vintage Sound amps. Excellent work as always! I'm glad you and your family are doing better.
Purchased a VS amp some years ago, aII the whiIe testing a Two Roc. Got the VS home and played it out of the madness of the store and it was noisy; more so than a tube amp should be. Next morning I returned it and payed the extra for the Two Roc(Bad eyboard). 6 Years of Gigging it reguIarIy and no problems. Yours is a very entertaining channel, You do us aII a great service.
Lyle, you are the best. As an OG who has studied electronics in me youth in high school and tech college, collectively 5 years, you truly bring back all the skills that I have forgotten. I am so happy that you and your daughter has recovered from that crud. Be well, mate. You and Ted Woodford are the best!
I was too busy laughing at the backwards diode to answer. That little kiddie song "One of These Things is Not Like the Others", was playing in my head too.
I hate to hear that you and your daughter went through such a rough spell! Glad to hear that you are both doing better! Here's to wishing you both much better health for the rest of the year!
I felt good that I called what the problem is. I mean it was pretty obvious with a camera pointed it. But it gives me the courage to now build my own line of amps and sell them. - Kidding. Thanks for sharing the knowledge and humor.
Really glad you're daughter and you are ok now. Nothing is more dear and important than family especially your kids. Glad to see you back, missed you man!👍
The joys of spending nights in ER... At least you had a chair, personally I slept on the floor the last time I went with my daughter. Good to hear all is OK and thanks for the vids.
Glad to hear your daughter's medical issues are fully rectified and she's operating within spec. As for your cough, I read on the Internet that orange drops will clear that up beautifully. Good health to you and yours, good sir.
Sorry to hear about your daughters health scare... Glad she is OK. You as the father get high fives for being there for her. Take the time you need to remain healthy. You are already a hero for your family. 😎👍👍
Sir you should tell us if there is an issue, that way we can pray on the front side. i have a VS amp 35SC, 2X6L6 and kind of a cross between a Super reverb and a Vibroverb is the description. The amp works perfectly so far, and I've had it for 2 1/2 years, bought used. The amp is dead quite, and sounds great in any cab,210, 410, 112, 115, I don't have a 212 anymore. I have asked Rick about a couple things, like running two cabs and the way the tremolo works, and he always responds back the next day. I owned a 65 Blackface Bassman, and it reminds me of that alot, so I'm very happy with the amp. I've been curious about things for a while, and have spoken to Lollar, Rivera, Becky Lawrence in my quest for tone. I'm just an old guy that still loves good tone. I'm putting mini HB's in a cheap strat right now, but I'm building a current limiter next. Thank you for your honest remarks and reviews. I've had 4 hand wired amps, but the Peavey Classic 50 410 is still the best sounding to my ears. Oh Boy! I can only afford so many amps, so my opinion is limited to what i can afford, and have available, that's what makes the rock and roll world go round!
@@rocketpigrecords3719 Dude, I've been a patternmaker, a machinist and a toolmaker, so my contributions to society possibly could outweigh your endeavors. You just might live in Gotham City in your mom's basement because you refuse to leave. I have built stuff for Uncle Ted, and Bob's your uncle. Did you know that Russia is looking for cleaver people?
Waiting to see a bunch of vintage sound amps on reverb for cheap in the near future. Thanks for always sharing the good the bad and the ugly. On a positive I bought a swart partly based off your positive review of their build.
Glad all is well with your family. I’ve been waiting to see one of Ricks amps cross your work bench. I have a VS 22SC which has been noisy since day one. Every time I call him for suggestions it’s, try changing the tubes??? Think it’s time to unload it. It’s still under warranty but there’s no point in shipping all the back to the person who couldn’t it right in the first place. I’ll be lucky if I get a 3rd of what I paid for it. Thanks for the video and all the best to you and your family.
Glad that your daughter is fine now! For what it`s worth: I had the flu 4 weeks ago and I`m also still a bit low on energy, but it`s getting better all the time.....better, better, beeetter... And so will you. All the best to you and your family
God bless you and your family. We can wait any amount of time for the best guitar amplifier content on youtube. There is never rush. I am glad to here that you are all recovering.
Hi Lyle glad to hear your daughter is better! All the very best, and thanks for your great videos, I'm from Australia, and I brought a vintage sound 40 probably about 5 years ago, I had a problem with blowing the fuse, but it seems to be good for now.
Thanks always for your excellent informative videos Lyle! I operate on people...they're far less complicated than these tube amps :) I'm so happy that you and your daughter are both on the mend. Really appreciate all that you do to educate the guitar and tech community
Glad to see you back and I hope everything with the medical endeavor goes well. That shit is never fun and always a goddamn hassle. Godspeed my friend.
Extremely disappointed to see this. I have been interested in Vintage Sound Amps for years and even talked to Rick about a 'Super Reverb" build a few years ago. On a happier note, I am glad both your daughter and you are feeling better.
Stress and exhaustion has gotten me ill a few times, especially as I get older. Easy does it. Glad to hear things have been taken care of. Be well. Now back to the arts . . . love this review . . . looks like it would be better to go find a used silver face Twin and mod it.
Glad your family is back up and running. Unbelievable oversight on the rectification stage, I noticed that immediately. I’m below amateur level when it comes to servicing or building amps but even I would’ve caught that. That’s bad.
No better place in the world to catch a cold than a hospital. Glad you're all doing better. Pretty sad about the amps. I try to be forgiving to small, startup companies, but the point of small and startup is that you're supposed to give serious attention to detail. That's a price point where you can get Friedman's cheaper lines and if you poke around, even some used Top Hat gear. Don't want to pay that much for something that gets that low level of QC before going out the door.
Hey Lyle, I live about 80 miles north of you in the Bootheel and we had the same arctic blast here. My wife and I have been sick off and on since Oct. and finally got over everything around Christmas. Then my Mom got sick and I lost her on Jan. 16th, we had her funeral on Jan. 23. So it's been crazy here too man. Sure enjoy your videos and be safe in this insane times we're in.
hey! there you are ... glad you are back and your daughter recovered ... hope you can get decent rest in the upcoming days so you can clear your mind and avoid installing diodes backwards :P

Dang, I've had my VSA almost 20 years, and it's just great. Sorry to hear this.
As an amp fan I really appreciate having a pro view on quality - too many times companies focus on "components" without showing build quality. Cheers.

Wow, this is a nearly $2000 amp! Absolutely inexcusable for it to have such shoddy build quality.
Happy to hear your daughter is ok. Love these videos
"You know believe it or not, I don't wake up every morning wondering if there is some new amp company I can shit on"

So sorry to hear about your daughter. Those are frightening times glad she is OK now. Thanks for your content. It is brilliant.
