Hi there, Wolf.
As someone who knows many Chechens and Ingushs, it is crucial to keep in mains few things about relationship between Russia and its North Caucasian region:
1) Nobody forgot anything. Neither forgave anyone. They are this type of people who will act as soon as there will be better chance.
2)There is no shame in adopting to despite situation. After all, many people went throw similar path. There is no different for Chechens.
3) Chechens only fighting for Russia because of two things: A) because they had been forced by local version of Mussolini (Ramzan "Don-Condom" Kadyrov), who has almost unlimited power in his republic; B) they had been promised some benefits, like enormous payment, permission for looting and forgiveness for been freedom fighters (even for those who never been tho). But, as open Russo-Ukrainian war shows us, they are mostly used for propaganda and act like barrier troops (which is banana, because they killed more Russians than Ukrainians).
4) Ramzan "Sick Goatlover" Kadyrov and his subordinates has power in Chechnia only as appointed governor. His power ending right outside Russian borders. Chechen diaspora openly hates him and calling him a traitor, like his father. For example: if you meet some Chechens outside Russia, they mostly likely using flag of Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, not one that officially using in Russia.
5) Russian people hates this piece of shit and his followers even more. In late 1990's he proudly telling how he tortured and maundered Russian guy in age of 16. And same man in early 2000's received rank of Police Major General, Medal of Hero of Russia and etc. Basically, for betraying his own people and becoming collaborator. This is why he trying to show his loyalty to Moscow whenever he can - otherwise, without federal financial support and weapon, he would be beheaded long time ago.
6) Since April 2014, there are many Chechens who supporting Ukraine to fight back against Russians. Some individuals acts on their own, but there are two well known volunteer units: Dzhokhar Dudayev (pro-democratic) and Sheikh Mansur (moderate Islamism) battalions. There also under formation another unit made of North Caucasian volunteer - Free Caucasian Brigade. So, no, Kadyrovites do not represent all Chechens. There are plenty of sons and daughters of Caucasian Mountain who still value freedom as something worth to fight for.
7)Russians are outsiders for North Caucasian people. Since early 19th century, as for these days. After everything what Russians done, they still did not completely reshaped this region. Neither its people. Only strong grip and "divide and conquer" policy keeping this region inside border of Russia.
8) My good friend, Ibrahim, pretty much moderate Muslim. He love and taking care of his parents, having his own café in Istanbul, a great husband and father. Best man in our company. But in March 10, 2022 he moved to Ukraine and joined ranks of International Legion (he serving in Dzhokhar Dudayev battalion). He still alive and still fighting (May Lord keep him safe and strong). His motivation is that news gave him painful memories. He was only 5 when First War started, but he remember every horrors he witnessed. He filled with anger, but mostly do not want Ukrainians to share same fate as he went throw. He could stay and live peaceful life in Turkiye, but made his choice. This is what bringing me faith in humanity and showing true spirit of Chechen people.
