I actually got goosebumps watching this video.
I love pushing myself to the limit in the quiet nature environment, it's very zen like.

There can be zen in rowing. Looking at this I put sound away. NO WORDS, NO EXPLANATION. I "sense" it, but the type of boat is not important. My old seakayak did it on all waters in all seasons and weather. Now I am an old man rowing in a Very Wherry and it gives peace, mindless linked to all water on our planet. Dirk

Nice video of rowing. Looks like Humber River, Lake Ontario.
I lost some of the Zen of rowing when seeing the hi-tech rowing shell, sliding seat, space age materials.
I'm a wooden boat sculler, wood oars, fixed seat. The design goes back to the 1800's. I can feel the Zen in that. King George, George Fredrich Handel, Water Music.
    That's Zen.
I can't pick up my boat with 2 hands and just plop it in the water. :-)
My Thames Rowing Skiff weighs 150 pounds.

Wow. I wish my rowing technique was that smooth.

the zen of rowing really doesn't have anything to do with the equipment being hi tech or low tech. it's the feeling you get from being on the doing something you enjoy doing, either in a single or any larger boat.
