I saw them at Bonnaroo while tripping on mushrooms - so excited to see what they had in store and they opened with this song! The whole set was amazing and crazy from start to finish.

I have an interpretation of the song and if it’s about what I think it’s about, it might be my favorite of theirs. I would write it out but I don’t want to seem parasocial or cross any boundaries given what I think it’s about.

@@TheGlizzler I must preface this saying that I in no way know Em of the band’s transgender experience, nor do I have any experience of myself with transness- but as someone with lots of friends who are transgender, the lyrics read to me like a letter of encouragement and acceptance of being trans (possibly about Em and her experience, but I don't want to just assume, so I'll try and talk about my interpretation of the lyrics through an ambiguous lens).
      "You look green,
      like you've been
      to the islands of men
      Thought you found
      what it means
      peace of mind
      But you can't know
      Womankind from your dreams".
To me, this first verse sets that precedent. It reads as almost like a dialogue from Cameron, saying that this individual looks ill from trying to go to "an island of men"; forcing themselves to be/act like a man. “Thought you found what it means, peace of mind; but you can’t know womankind from your dreams” - perhaps this could allude to the fact that this individual thought they found peace just acting like a man, yet yearning to be themselves in their dreams.
The chorus reinforces this: “you can’t keep running away, from what is real and what is fake. You won’t get, what you want in its place”. Again, this reinforces the dialogue feel of the lyrics. Cameron is telling them to stop running away from what they need, or actually, what is real as they won’t get what they want in place of it.
I’m not sure what lazy eye is referring to, it’s placed as a noun in the next verse, though I interpret that as a bit of word painting, possibly just reinforcing the “you look weak” part of the line and “you have seen islands of men”. I really love the next refrain with:
      “Will you stop running away
      From what you seek?
      I’m on your side
Do you watch what I keep?
      Or cast aside?”
This part made me emotional and start to feel as if the lyrics were more personal perhaps. The urgency of Cameron’s advice is really palpable. Overall, the earnestness of “I’m on your side” and the line “you can’t know womankind from your dreams” gave me the impression that this song was about encouraging someone going through a transition to embrace their true selves and stop running away from it.
