Today marks the 80th anniversary of Monty's tide-turning victory over Rommel's Afrika Corps at El Alamein, in the North African desert, a little to the west of Cairo, Egypt. Fascinating battle, would love to visit the ground over which it was fought. Despite its being derided by some historians as a foregone conclusion, that is, a British victory, it was a stunning victory nonetheless, thanks to Monty's thorough preparation & intelligent, perceptive generalship. I concur with Churchill's evaluation---"El Alamein may not have marked the beginning of the end of WW2 but it DID signify the end of the beginning." This is great postwar film-footage of 3 military giants of the 20th-century---sadly, mostly unknown today by the younger generations.

OH! And by the way, Truman was an Artillery Officer in WW1. He wore glasses & couid not see well. He snuck into the optometrist's office and memorized the eye chart to pass the vision exam. Truman hated both Patton & General Mc Arthur, who he fired in the Korean War. (1950-53) Douglas Mc Arthur was a battlefield general in WW1 and Patton was on Pershing's staff & a tank unit commander at the battle of St. Michiel, where he was badly wounded. Truman was a haberdasher (hat maker) before the war.

Harry Truman commanded an artillery unit. Only the British had tanks during the Great War.
