Padding is optional in rugby not mandatory - its not the big motorcross bikers looking shoulder guards and helmet, it's light foam padded undershorts and sometimes the Scrum cap which is also just soft foam. Also not all guys who play rugby are 6ft 6 250 pounds, Shane Williams who used to play for Wales is about 5ft 7 and weighed approx. 170lb in his playing days - but he played on the wing not. Rugby always has varying sizes when it comes to players.

Conversely, there’s less concussions in rugby BECAUSE we don’t wear helmets! The player is more likely to naturally avoid head contact when not wearing protection. Obviously it still happens fairly regularly, but not as often as AF.

@@JJLAReacts I believe one of the biggest problems with American Football and concussions is the WAY they tackle because they have helmets too. You're more likely to get neck compression injuries etc, and if I'm not mistaken some years ago a certain type of tackle was banned in American Football because it was particularly good at breaking your own neck? The javelin or something? I remember it being in the news at some point anyway

@@JJLAReacts Rugby players have a physical resilience that American football players do not have, even the smallest athlete has the physical capacity to defeat a large American football player, apart from stamina as the plays are continuous and do not stop and the speed, and technically rugby is much better, American football should learn from rugby players how to do spears, the fact that they use protections makes the technique come last, often using the helmet for attacks and not the correct fit of the shoulder, the Protections take away the awareness of danger, it's a bad habit, when you feel the other player you notice better what you're doing correctly or not, it's like having a Nissan gt-r 35, it's so comfortable to go inside that you don't feel the road , the problem is that you also don't feel the speed at which you are going and it becomes dangerous. And the mental health thing is more an american things because in europe we have a lots of violents sports, nobody gets suicidal, thats the american life style that does that to people in america, one of your greatest problems is mental issues and obesity, and tend to use steroids, like wwe athletes do also

And only 1 point in it. I'm sure it sucks. But as an Englishman seeing that drop go over was the biggest rush. But we came very close to losing. In these types of games I adopt a 'who scored the most tries' type thing, which was England. So yeah the last gasp drop goal must have hurt, but so did all the points we conceded to pens etc. I think over all we just about deserved the win, but only just. But that was a great game. 8:27 Correct. You don't feel much pain. The only thing that will get to you is floor cuts from frozen mud, thigh studding, and the occasional winding.
The pain comes after. Usually takes about 4 days to heal from a match and the first day and a half is brutal.
N.B. I'm not sure thigh studding is as much of an issue these days. They changed the rules a few years back I think. You're not allowed to rake/ stamp a downed opponent in a ruck or something.

Some start playing rugby at about 11 years in school but some start even younger I've heard people saying that they started as young as 5 years old. And the reason why we have less concussions is because we don't have helmets most tackles are shoulder tackles.

Not sure if it’s the same in the other home nations but in England you can join the Under 6 age group at 4, although at this age they are just playing fun games involving rugby balls rather than actually playing rugby. Under 7s start playing matches of tag rugby (an extremely simplified version on the game with Velcro tags that are worn around the waist and are pulled off to simulate a ‘tackle’) and contact is introduced at Under 9s. There’s a great organisation called Rugby Tots which introduces kids as young as 2 to the sport.

The helmet you thought the guy was wearing, wasn't! It was a scrum cap, a lightweight padded protection to protect the head (and particularly, the ears) in the scrum. ( Scrum: You said "What was that?" at 8'50" - See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrum_(rugby) )

3:00 I have a feeling it is legal. I don't remember the wording of the law but as long as you look after your opponent when tackling them it's fine. I think there is something about keeping your opponent either upright or horizontal; I don't think you're allowed to tip them head first to any degree.

Rugby Union & Rugby League have changed rules in recent years to outlaw the shoulder charge, hitting a player in the head, tackling a player in the air after they've kicked it & a few others to reduce the risks of concussions & other injuries. Both sports aren't as brutal as they used to be but the big hits come every now & then.

There is some forms of padding in rugby but they aren't big and elaborate as your NFL. Your NFL guys wear armour abit like motorcross bikers, whilst rugby they'll wear thin foam padded vest under their jersey, and the Skull cap or Scrum cap is light foam padding around the heads - and it also helps to stop players developing "cauliflower ears". But of course in NFL your padding is mandatory to wear, whilst in rugby its optional.

The thing to remember when watching non-US sports is that people play these for fun at weekends with no maximum age limit. We don't only have pro leagues where most stop playing after "college". We had a guy in a veterans game a few weeks ago who is in his 40s get a full dislocation of the ankle and double break to the lower leg. He will be back playing again next season.

The problem with hemlets is they protect more against the first impact, but the aftershock to the brain is doubled due to the material on the outside of the skull reflecting energy back into the skull, so no helmet is better in safer more powerful tackles than continous impacts within a helmet over time in mundane or one off hits

Never mess with a rugby player. They are mountains of highly mobile muscle who are used to every-day brutality and if you somehow get the better of them, they have at least another 16 buddies waiting to jump in (usually shoulder first). As far as rugby players padding goes the most you will generally find is a gum shield and a semi-helmet which does little to nothing in terms of preventing concussions.

The issue of concussion in Rugby is a growing concern. Several former UK players (around 300) are suing over traumatic brain injury caused by repeated blows to the head (leading to Parkinsons disease and memory loss).
Some of this is a result of professionalism in the game. Hits are harder. Before professionalism, there was a distinct difference between the forwards - Big, powerful, brutish, but slow lumbering players and the backs Fast, light, agile & clever - since professionalism the gulf between them has closed. Forwards now have speed and agility, while backs have bulk and power - so big powerful players are hitting each other harder.
There are now protocols in place over concussion- players suffering a severe head blow are sidelined and given an assessment by a doctor. In one match I played in school in the late 1980's I recieved two hard kicks to the head in rapid succession and the coach and referee were quite happy to let me play on despite my having spent 5 minutes lying semi conscious on the pitch. I was only substituted after a couple of player (from both teams) stopped and argued with the ref and coach that I wasn't in any condition to continue. And a couple of parents (who were doctors) demanded they examine me, and then took me to hospital... none of which I have any recollection of.

The difference between the two games......Rugby is a game for hooligans plated by gentlemen, Soccer is a gentleman's game played by hooligans, the helmet you saw is actually a soft cloth head covering called a scrum cap, worn to protect your ears in a scrum, which is what you saw @ 8:50. Incidentally if you want to see a small gay Welshman keeping these gorillas in line, check out "10 minutes of Nigel Owen being Nigel Owen". He is just about the most respected referee, who was chosen by Rugby's ruling body to referee an international match involving Wales.

This is the game I grew up playing as well as British Bulldog. Concussion is a huge issue in Australia. You can’t hit your opponent in the head although you can’t stop Head clashes. Rugby Union started when Webb Ellis picked up a soccer ball and ran with it. There are two forms of Rugby. Rugby Union and Rugby League. Rugby League would be more recognisable to an American football fan.

I'm from New Zealand. Our National team has the most winning record of any sports team ever. AFL managers have come here looking for the secret sauce.
I started playing at 6 years old, I made all my rep teams and we had a good record of success. When I got to college I was 13 and weighed 70kg 5"11. I quit. The guys were mainly island boys and weighed up to and over 100kg, once in college its open weight. And they were fast. I returned to surfing and riding mx. Some of my friends carried on and two of them made it into the National Team. "The All Blacks"... the reason our national team is so good is pride for the jersey and an intense training regime. Yes there are head injury and there is a case similar to the one in the states being brought against the world rugby committee.
Also half of those tackles were legal and hale were illegal. You can't tackle a guy in the air. You can't tackle with just your shoulder and no arms. If you duck down into a tackle that's not on the tackler of you get hit high.

You mentioned concussive injury . Although rugby players don't wear helmets , the instance of head injury is actually much less than it is in American Football . The reason is , the head is sacrosanct in Rugby .You will be ejected from the game for attacking the head of another player , and would likely spend some time suspended from the game . in my opinion the concussive injuries suffered in US football can be directly linked to the use of helmets . If I can use an analogy to explain . At the start of WW1 the British army realised that their soldiers were being hit by airburst explosives , so they ordered that they should be issued with helmets to protect their heads . to their horror the British discovered that casualties actually increased , rather than decreased . When they studied the problem , they found that the soldiers were so confident that they were now protected , that many of them started popping therir heads up to take a look over the trench , and were picked off by the opposition . I think what is happening in US football is very similar . The player feels safe to use his head as part of his armoury , because he thinks the helmet offers protection . As the British found out , it idoesn't , it just keeps the mess contained .

So there are more injuries in total in rugby, but there are fewer concussions. The lack of pads actually forces the players to hit properly, with the shoulder, or they'll get hurt. As a result, less head collisions for both offense and defensive players.

These are historical images , don’t let it put you off participating in this great game .

Rugby is definitely an extremely physical game, having said that, half the hits seen in this video are illegal plays. You are not allowed to tackle a player if he does not have the ball, not allowed to take a player's feet out from under him while he is in the air, have to use your arms in a tackle etc, etc. The rules don't allow for dangerous play. As you guys in the USA love your NFL, is the same way we in other parts of the world love our rugby. In my country, South Africa, it borders on a religion. As a by-note, when you see the two forward packs from each team pushing against each other it is known as a scrum, and is usually awarded after an unintentional foul play.

With regards to what was said about American Football becoming less popular due to mor epublic information about concusions etc, well while Rugby is definately more dangerous i feel like the players in both sports have different reasons, in the states it seems like it's all about the fame and money (like football here) where as in rugby it seems more like it's about the love of the sport.
For example if you were to ask the average Brit who isn't a rugby fan, to name a famous British rugby player, they probably couldn't, where as you'd be hard pressed to find someone from the stats who firstly wasn't an American football fan, and also couldn't name a famous US player.

  • @way2deep100

I started playing Rugby Union when it was an amateur sport, even at the elite level, and the rules that exist today aimed at protecting players from head and neck injuries weren't even a consideration. I don't know how or why the top players did it, but they did. Mervyn Davies, captain of Wales and the touring British Lions was a teacher at my school Monday to Friday. J P R Williams was a doctor. Audiences today find it hard to fathom that Rugby was effectively these guys' hobby. I played at school and then club level and went on to play American Football when it started to become popular in the UK, obviously at a fairly low level albeit as high as it got here in the 80s. I found the main difference to be the pads are needed because you can be hit unexpectedly. In rugby you generally get to brace yourself for contact, whether you're making it or receiving it. In American Football, especially when defending, a hit can come from anywhere and not necessarily in the vicinity of the ball. Without pads those would hurt if you're not prepared for them. I briefly returned to rugby a much more sheepish individual. I showed up for my first game back wearing my elbow and hip pads and sticky gloves, got mocked remorselessly (by my own teammates) and ordered by the referee to "get rid of that sh!t".

    • @WeLhOOse
      @WeLhOOse Рік тому +1

A key reason as to why the rules changed going into the professional era is the size of the players and speed that they move nowadays. The average of weight of players has skyrocketed since even the 90s and the speed of those players going into contact has increased with it.
As for the pads in American football, they were first introduced when it was more like rugby in terms of rules because of health and safety, granted nothing like what we see today. The style of American football has changed to what it is BECAUSE of the pads providing a false sense of security, hence very little technique in the tackles or emphasis on player safety
