      I would love to get your insight as to why your culture was against being great. That hard work is a bad thing and that victim hood is the way to go. I just have such a hard time understanding all of that and it's so upsetting to see social media trying to keep them in that victim hood mindset. It's said that black people cannot be racist when I actually believe there is more deep seeded racial bias in the black community than any other race. They absolutely judge us for being white but call us racist. 🤷‍♀️

    I wanna share my private school story too. I’m from the South Side of Chicago and I went to a school called Corliss High School, which was a school deep in the hood. Metal detectors and everything. I went there from my freshmen year and my sophomore year. I transferred to a private school because my moms had saved up enough money to send me to one. She always knew I was a smart kid but she knew that I was sometimes loyal to the wrong people. One of my closest friends joined a gang and I almost joined the gang too. But I went to this private school. I would have to take a bus about an hour and a half away just to get to the school, which was far into the suburbs. It was crazy how in the blink of an eye you’re looking out the window seeing projects, broken down houses and shit like that to seeing nice houses with nice cars parked in front of them. But the school was like a palace. Everything was so nice and maintained. It kind of made me depressed because I felt like I was behind on life because every one of these kids got a head start on me. It was hard for me to establish a community with people who can not relate to me. Even the black folk there couldn’t relate to growing up poor in the inner city and hearing gun shots every night, so everyone I knew was just an acquaintance. But looking back, going to that school probably saved me from joining a gang. I’m in college now in Minnesota and I just gotta think about how blessed I am because most people don’t make it how far as I am.

    • @AntonDaniels
      @AntonDaniels  4 роки тому +18

      There is another way to look at it... that you had a leg up on the people from your hood (including your friend who joined a gang). Also, your advantage over the other kids in the private school was your experiences and mindset. Everyone will always be behind someone, but the key to life is to stop comparing your lot in life to others because life is truly about experiences and not stuff. Thanks for sharing my friend.

      @@AntonDaniels maybe you can offer advise for me then. My son has been in private and unfortunately predominantly white schools since about 4, he’s 9 now. To offer a balance and his request since he was 5, he’s played sports only through local city leagues because they are predominantly black. Do you feel as a black man that it is best to continue this way?

    It’s called “exposure.” We went to Catholic schools from jump street growing up in Detroit and then college. “Being dumb was dumb. Being smart is smart!” Good saying. You made many good and salient points. I used to be teased because I spoke “proper.” But then I learned to be bi-dialectual. I can have comfortable conversations with just about anyone. Then I learned about and lived in different cultures, yet another window to the world. I’ve had friends who attended U of D Jesuit. I graduated from U of D (the college) in 1974.

      Anton Daniels Many times our people talk themselves out of exploring different lifestyles needlessly but there’s history to support their reticence. I can understand and appreciate that. By then I was a single Mom and the discipline along with situational awareness made us better people . I still believe that private school expected us to be the best version of ourselves . Private school is great if you're taking a kid from a lower class socio-economic status. If your parents have money, frankly, it doesn't matter where you go because you'll land safely in life. Fundamentally, you'll be more successful in life if you grow up in a 2 family household (or if there's a male figure in the home even if they are not the biological father) who provides values, norms and prioritizes hard work and education. Here's the thing, immigrants from Africa, Asia, Caribbeans etc. come to this country and though they may start off their lives in lower class neighborhoods but many move out and their children (at least the 1st generation) are highly successful. This has a lot to do with the home life.

    Check out SAR academy in NY, (where teacher/student ration is 5:1 and annual tuition is around 45k per pupil) and other private schools and you will get the picture. The US has a two tiered educational system, it exists because the US allows it to exist. In many advanced nations, such as: Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Spain to just a few - there are no "private" schools. Therefore, education becomes everyone's business. There is no 'private academy' that some families can enjoy while others languish. Because all interest/energy/dollars are placed in one public school system - Guess what, their school systems for both the affluent and the less affluent, education becomes everybody's business and the results are phenomenal - better than the US and this eliminates the two tiered educational opportunities (one for the 'haves' the other for the 'have nots'). Hey, but thanks for sharing.

    Thanks man i really appreciated this video it’s really making this decision a little easier for me. So i’m 14 year old black man and going into my sophomore year of high school and i’ve been in private christian school all my life. I don’t live in the hood necessarily but i wouldn’t know cause i don’t know what happpens in my town to be honest. That’s the thing cause i was in a small 20 person private school and that is all i knew it really shaped how i was raised and what i was exposed to. Like I still have a lot of stuff to learn but if your talking about like actually knowing and actually seeing “oh this is how messed up the world is” I learned all that when i was 12/13 so that is basically 1 year ago. Not that much time in between. So my social skills were terrible and they are better now but still terrible. And to be completely honest I can’t even dap a person up properly. And the problem with going to a 20 person school for all of elementary and middle school sheltered me from the harsh reality of life and shaped me in a way. So now this freshman year i’ve actually gone to in person school which is actually a privilege and i am grateful for that. But this is a new school with like 250 people in it from k-12 so like 60-80 high schoolers in total and ik most of their names. But it showed me something important at least to me. That i love sports and I ultimately can’t do them bc i can only go to practice 2 times a week and can’t go to any of the games. I live 40 minutes away from the high school and my mom has to work a night shift to get extra money to pay for the school. My mom works 12 hour shifts 5-6 days a week and tries to put both her kids in private school. It’s to much stress on her. She can’t pick me up from practice or games bc she has to be at work so that takes out sports out of the equation. And I know sports isn’t everything but I really want to go D1 in track and i’ve been into running since 7th grade but the school currently doesn’t have track or even tackle football it’s flag football. Which is also another sport i want to try out. But i’ve never been coached on the sport i really love and i want to see what i can do with my body that God gave me and my parents gave me genetically cause i got some pretty good genetics. Also academically let me just say that freshman year was way to easy too easy passed with a 4.0 without even trying too easy. And yeah i studied but like the only time i actually like struggled if you call it that was at the last part of the year with math which i got like the highest score on the final with like a 127/100 and even so with the math it was just at the beginning of the last 2 chapters then after that spending no time actually trying to learn it it just clicked and bang no effort into math. It was just too easy for me. And again with science finished with a 104/100 my lowest class was auto shop with a 93 i don’t know how that isn’t a A- but it isn’t so whatever. And points were for participating and i’m not such a good communicator so yeah that’s why i got 90s and 95s on participating. And my next lowest was religion cause i slacked off at the end of the year cause. didn’t care my grades were already in place. I put the littlest effort and got a 4.0. And why i’m stating this is because my school doesn’t have ap classes for a lot of stuff. So i can’t even do anything advanced in sophomore year’s day junior year the ap class i can take is my least favorite history. Yeah i’m not taking apush. But yeah i’ve been thinking about transferring to a public school because i want to go for that dream of going D1 and improve academically. But my problem is me not wanting to stray from that path. And not get influenced by the people around me. Right now at midnight i’m thinking why did i write all this out. I’m worried that i’ll let people down and let my mom down by going to public school. But i need to think about what is best for me and what i need to achieve the goals I want because I need more challenging classes which public school provides which includes dual enrollment and stuff like that. And i can venture into sports like football and track which are avenues i can’t take at my current school. So, man i really want to thank you and just me ranting out my life helped me a ton on my decision which i have been struggling with for months. I now have the courage to go and actually follow through with my words. And again thank you.
    P.S- this whole long thing is probably gonna make no sense cause first it’s literally 1 a.m( it’s fine i wake up at 10 im getting my 9 hours) second i didn’t proofread it because i don’t have that kind of time i need to go to bed. And third im 14 years old my brain isn’t fully developed and i just looked back on something i wrote 198 days ago and i am astonished on how dumb and how cool i tried to be when i clearly wasn’t. Anyway thank you again for giving me a platform to rant on and put down my thoughts and feelings.

    Thanks for this video. I went to a private school from kindergarten to 6th grade. After I graduated I ended up transitioning into a public school. Adjusting to that environment was challenging. Academics is first in private school. Being smart is valued, speaking proper English is valued. This was an all black private school. I immediately noticed a difference when I attended a public school. Also, the public schools I attended divided the students. There were remedial or special education students , regular students, honors and magnet students. The private school that I attended did not have these different sections.

    Same thing back when I was in public high school (90s) that working hard is not considered smart, and while its not necessarily looked down upon, the common believe is that street smart is far more revered than having good grade. While I think that is not totally inaccurate, the biggest problem is the mindset that puts you in. Thinking that you don’t have to work hard, believing in short cuts, and that “making it” means fancy cars or having things that others do not have. Took a long time for me to really set my path straight… on the up side though I think in the later 90s and early 2000s public school student’s view had shifted somewhat and began to recognize the value in hard work and academic achievements… not sure what is the norm in public school now tho…

    I came to this video to find out what the difference was between public and private schools. I wasnt blessed to grow up in a home where my parents could afford to put me in private schools. I grew up on the east side of detroit . I battled proverty and homelessness throughout my highschool years. I wanted to go to cass or king but i never applied because i didnt think i would get in. All the ppl who did eventually flunked out and had to come back to the local schools. I think alot of wht you were saying was just subjective. You say ppl learn bad life lessons , but were they truely bad or were they necessary to survive. I also think values should be taught to you by your parents. I learned from them to judge ppl on their character not their skin color. 27 dollars an hour was like 50 back then. The first place i moved in was $400 now you would be lucky to find a llace for 1200. Ppl who worked tht line moved out of detroit into big homes and bought nice cars. They took care of their families as oppose to begging ppl to hire you in detroit. Yes $27 aint nothing today and they couldve made more money but doing wht? I went to puic schools and if your grades werent up to par , you couldnt play on the football team or any team. You still had to maintain a certain gpa. Dumb was still considered dumb. Yes you got teased for being smart but you got teased for everything , being short , nappy hair , none name brand clothes , hell not looking black ( like me ) not being black. It was worse if you were dumb. I just really wanted to know how it set a person up differently than ppl who went to public schools. Alot of the things you said , you shouldve learned from your elders.

    Thanks for your time today. I think that middle school is a very important time for kids to get that type of wraparound perspective about the world and I think we should think more about like that here in the United States I'm providing that every kid at that middle school age so they are ready to go in the high school thinking differently about what they want to do and what they can do so I was in a program geared towards getting me into college through the UC schools which I did and every person that I knew who were in those programs also went to college to so but as far as making a difference in being a leader those things kind of came through no peeing in the marching band man you know at church on the Usher board you know those types of things but unfortunately you know we as a community you know we are best teachers basically so I mean of our own kids so we just need to stick to our guns and make sure he just used lies the power that we have you know but I do understand about learning about different cultures I did you know and so I grew up in a mixed neighborhood you know and things like that but I learn to love my culture when I got even more so in the college is studying you know African American studies things like that so but thanks for sharing it was good to see your video keep up the good work sending love and kindness and blessings to you.
