  • The way you start your jump will have a big impact on consistency and your comfort level at take-off. In this video you will learn how to start the high jump, the 3 different starting styles and some tips on finding the best style to maximize your jump.
    A proper starting position ensures the athlete maintains good posture while beginning to accelerate. Most important, it should be a position that can be executed consistently to reach the proper takeoff point with the most speed.
    Athletes may start their approach a number of ways by using a standing start, walk-in or skip-in technique. These different styles are discussed and demonstrated in this lesson.

    I have done high jump since my seventh grade year, and now I’m at the end of my sophomore (10th grade) year. The only issue I every has is my steps and my approach. I watched this video a little over a week ago and it helped. Before watching this, my previous PR was 5’8. After applying the new approach, I kicked my PR up to 5’10”. Thanks!

    I guess this could apply to LJ and TJ as well, have a start that is comfortable for you. I have used standing and 3 point starts, but I think I will try walk in as a medium style of approach between the two.

    Hi. I'm treating a long jumper who has lateral ankle pain on the right foot when she pushes off. I've never looked at jumping until now but there a lot of planterflexion and rotation going on in that movement. Is there a technical break down off that push off movement?

    This is my first time ever doing track and field and my coach said I should do the high jump. I have no idea what techniques or anything I should do. One of my questions is which side should you start from and which foot do you jump off of. Also if there is any other tips to give me I would appreciate it.

    Tips for warm up before competition?

    • @OutperformOfficial
      @OutperformOfficial  5 років тому +1

      We have 2 chapters dedicated to warm-up before competition in our high jump masterclass (chapters 20 and 21 vimeo.com/ondemand/highjump). As far as tips, you want to warm up the muscles as joints as well as the nervous system. A skips, b skips, band resisted take-off drills etc. There is definitely some cross over with sprinting drills/warm ups. Check out ua-cam.com/video/3XyYjwInaJc/v-deo.html for a few warm up ideas.

    Do you have any tips for leaning on the curve?

      There are a lot of elements to running the J or the curve (we have an entire chapter dedicated to it in the Jumping Smarter, Jumping Higher class). As far as tips; make sure your approach is dialed in so you know your radius. Drawing a circle with chalk during practice is a great way to know if you are following it. Make sure you are not stepping too far out when you are starting the turn or curve. This is a common error and can really cause problems.

    Do you have any recommendations on how far back from the pole we should start?

    • @OutperformOfficial
      @OutperformOfficial  5 років тому +1

      Hi Noah, that is a difficult question to answer as each athlete will be different and discovering the ideal approach takes some time and experimentation. You want to start with a shorter approach and work your way back as you get more comfortable. We have several chapters on discovering an approach in the full class ua-cam.com/users/redirect?q=https%3A%2F%2Fvimeo.com%2Fondemand%2Fhighjump&event=video_description&redir_token=vCzwjDtDlIZPAR8fgWQa5u8GsFh8MTU1NTU0MDYwOUAxNTU1NDU0MjA5&v=RPVUJGXFYAo

      Typically an arms length away from the bar is where you should plant your jumping foot so you should start your steps there when taking them and when you do your run through and jumps your plant foot should be in that arms length away spot

      Start working on your knee drive ua-cam.com/video/nquHlhAD-qs/v-deo.html
      There are also other drills like single leg bounds, lunges, split squats etc. that will help you to develop strength and get comfortable jumping off 1 leg.
