Uncomfortably hot, sweaty and insect ridden! Not the best conditions for wild camping. Thanks for sharing Ben. How are the Altra Lone Peak mid boots doing? The most comfortable sleeping mat I have is also the most impractical, as I found out last week in the Peak District. Having recently got back into trekking, have spent way too much on gear - including the Helm Compact II which you personally recommended and you were *not* wrong!!!!! Thanks for that!!!! But having spent lots on some items I saved on others and went cheap on a mat with an OEX Traverse 5. Tell you what, it is comfortable AF!!! but never really considered how impractical it was for backpacking until I tried to pack it. Over 1 kg and the size of a cocker spaniel :( Ended up doing that noob thing of attaching it outside the bag because I really could not fit it inside. Will keep it for car camping but am now looking at another one I think you owned? The Exped ultra. Love the video anyway Ben. Keep them coming!

Plus it was just funny AF!
Hey man just wanted to say I really enjoy watching your channel and enjoy watching all the content you make and I already know your going to be a huge outdoor UA-cam soon
26C... I guess that's hot for you blokes but wait till you've camped in 40C. That's when you pull up the vehicle and set up your tarp, chairs and cooler (or fridge) and just sit in the shade and enjoy the serenity while the kids splash in the creek. Sleeping might happen but too often you just lie still and sweat. Mind you, you don't need as much wood for the campfire... Right decision to pack up and go home. As we say in Australia; "any idiot can be uncomfortable in the bush..." Hot weather use a tarp and a mozzie net, tents are too hot.
Having worked in a canteen, I wouldn't recommend tuna on a warm day unless you have a small cool bag and eat it quite soon after setting up the tent. .
I strongly recommend you to buy new version ofRock Front 350 pro quilt. You can sleep in it in 0 degrees C. It comes with a sheet and a pillow case, and it weighs 700 grams quilt plus sheet.
Widesea Camping Ultralight Sleeping Bag, i took off the zipper, and hand sow mine into a quilt, it get you down to 40 f, that lowest you want to go, unless you wear layers or a bivy bag, you get cold at 30 f. Good bag for early spring and early summer.
This is why I never pitch a tent in an open space, especially if I know it’s going to be sunny. I actually pick it based on what the weather will be like the next morning. If it’s anyway sunny or warm, I’ll always pitch under trees. If there is no trees, I’ll pitch the tarp over the tent in the area where I know the sun will rise. Not only helps keep the temp down, but also blocks the light out and gives you a few extra hours in the morning.
A great video showing a cheap ultralight set up, and bailing at the end, all for the right reasons. If you do this again, it would be interesting to know the costs of each bit of kit and then all in costs, Ben. Would the cook set would have added about 400g?
@@DaleyOutdoors You were carrying 4 k of water, so I don't think that's an issue, if you were out on a hill with water sources you would have nailed it, 4.3 kilo + 300g for a meal, porridge, and a brew, you would have nailed it. I suppose the larger question is.... who is Mick Douglas, is he the guy I see in restaurants eating behind a napkin?
Certainly some of the ultralighters will only go with non-hot/cold soak foods. I'm toying with relying on a ration heater for a single pack of wet boil in the bag, for single overnighters.
So many flies this year. I'm covered in bites just walking up the high street. The only place to camp in this weather is onyop of a hill as hopefully the wind will blow the flies away
Well that had the plague of irritating midgy thingies 😳 Don't blame you on the bail out 👍🏻 May I suggest keeping some wet wipes in your first aid - they would help cool down bites, itches and rashes 🤔 - well it works for me anyway. Have got the bungy loops/cord on my Andes tent but they could do with being longer - what is the thickness of the cord you've used?
I bailed 13 miles into a 21 miler on the south west coast path on Friday, had 7 miles left to do rated as severe, got the bus to campsite. Better to bail than take the risk
I wonder if you’d consider doing a review on your Apple Watch? I’ve just ordered one and would be keen to hear advice on suitable apps for us outdoors folk!
Daley, I don't blame you for bailing out this afternoon, it doesn't sound like fun, when loads of flies have invaded the tent & legs are itching like a flea infested camel. Personally, I would have done the same. I own the Widesea 400 sleeping bag (weighs 770 grams) about 4 years now, and is slightly heavier than your Widesea 300, and it has a comfort rating of 6 degrees celsius. I have always felt cold using it at that temperature outdoors, and usually add a liner or wear thermal layers or both. I think in reality the true comfort rating is probably around 12 or 13 degrees celsius. I'd be interested in hearing how you get on with yours. All the best.
“Tuna Cob” that’s a new food name for me. I did the bungee cord on my naturehike tent too but with elastic shoe laces. Works a treat. I didn’t do the double loop thing because I’m obviously not as World wise as you but we all learn at our own pace don’t we 😁👍
😂😂😂 quality mate, your slowly building up your end catch phrases 😂 yeh balls to getting eaten alive by flys just to say a sleeping bag worked lol, looking forward to your next no camp 😮😂😂😂
I was going to wildcamp on my days off . But the heat is too much. Sorry about the troll. Very aggressive. You deserve better. At least you took it positively. On the good note you were out for a bit in the outdoors. Did a bit of filming. Thanx buddy ..always good content even the eating he he. Take care and god bless
Had me laughing my head off. Brilliant and very funny, loved the moaning as I love having a good old moan myself. So many videos try to paint the perfect picture of camping. No one shows themselves not really enjoying it, forgetting their f'ing lighter for the stove or their tent poles or getting lost or all the other stuff that goes wrong. That's the reality of camping. Great stuff! Keeping it real nice one 👍
I agree with you, don't be frightened to bail. You don't have anything to prove. Lying in that tent in the heat with itchy legs would have been no fun, and that's why we do it, to enjoy being outside.
The rash was an aversion to ultralight camping, good decision to bail if you wasn’t feeling it! Ultralight is for 1% or extreme athletes, I’ll take comfort for a couple of kilos extra any day of the week 🍄
It''s possible the rash you got on your legs was from the sap of a weed such as (new growth) cow parsnip, growing in amongst the grass. The sap splashes on you when you snap the stems whilst crunching through the grass. Worth noting that the sap of this and some other weeds is phototoxic which means that, even after you wash it off, it's sometimes pre-sensitised your skin to ultraviolet light so that the rash can reappear when exposed to sunlight, even some time later. I've been caught out by it in the past, ploughing along a very overgrown footpath thinking I was OK by wearing walking trousers, so now I'm careful to avoid such situations. There's no need to get paranoid about it, though, at least not in the UK - the leaves are instantly recognisable once you know what to look for (lots of good YT videos available on various umbellifers like cow parsnip) and you can usually step around them easily enough.
hi, all credit to you ben for giving it a bash. mother nature can be somewhat harsh sometimes and it's knowing when to say, enough! looking forward to the next video. kind regards.
Summer camping, especially when it's 24c or higher, is just not pleasant. Even hiking in that temperature is a pain. Leave it to the amateurs and wait until its cooler. 😉
I wild-camped earlier this week and thought I'd do without my pillow to save some space. Big mistake - won't be doing that again! Rolled-up clothes are no substitute and will lead to a crappy night's sleep.
Hello Ben 🙋♂️. Hope you are good !! You done the right thing there and bailed to be honest !! The midges 🪰 would have just eaten you alive - no point in laying in a sweaty tent ⛺️ getting your; 🥜🔩🌰 even more sweaty 🥵 as the night progresses !! You must have pitched your tent 🏕 next to to much 🐑 sheep 💩 !! I would have done the exact same and bought some 🍟 chips on the way home 🏠!! A few years ago a guy I know had the same experience and bailed !! - when he went 🏠 the window 🪟 cleaner had popped round to “do in inside” of his windows (with his dog) whilst his kids were playing outside. His wife (now ex) had a bit of explanation to do !! He arrived all; “red and blotchy” from the bites as well !! Nice homecoming !! Mind how you go !! James 🫶✌️
Well done for having the balls to "admit defeat" and to show it on UA-cam. Even if you had stayed out you probably wouldn't have tested the bag as you would have just lay on top of it. It might have been a good evening for trousers instead of shorts and a long sleeved shirt (I've packed both items {plus mozzie head net} for my trip to Scotland in the morning - it saves on smidge as less skin is exposed).
Very good call. No point torturing yourself. Credit to you too mate for showing a bail. 👍

I wonder if you’d consider doing a review on your Apple Watch? I’ve just ordered one and would be keen to hear advice on suitable apps for us outdoors folk!
Already done 👉 ua-cam.com/video/OGYKeIZ3SRo/v-deo.html
I sub to you, None I know yet have I seen, have talk about how many years the ultralight gear will last?
Thanks for the comment 🤓 I’m looking forward to testing the bag out properly 👍 Ben
@@DaleyOutdoors awesome stuff : ) look forward to watching that video
“Tuna Cob” that’s a new food name for me. I did the bungee cord on my naturehike tent too but with elastic shoe laces. Works a treat. I didn’t do the double loop thing because I’m obviously not as World wise as you but we all learn at our own pace don’t we 😁👍
Yeah you'll get there one day. Chin up. 😆
@@DaleyOutdoors I can only but live in hope 😁
Hi mate would you ever take your dog on a wild camp?
Yes I have done in the past. Check out the back catalogue 😉
@@DaleyOutdoors haha will have a look now thanks mate.
😂😂😂 quality mate, your slowly building up your end catch phrases 😂 yeh balls to getting eaten alive by flys just to say a sleeping bag worked lol, looking forward to your next no camp 😮😂😂😂
Haha cheers Mick!
Cheers mate. Yeah I still enjoyed getting out and a decent-ish walk 👍
Good mods with the tent, not a fan of that tent but can be used in others.
Haha will do. Warts and all! 😆
I agree with you, don't be frightened to bail. You don't have anything to prove. Lying in that tent in the heat with itchy legs would have been no fun, and that's why we do it, to enjoy being outside.
Exactly. Cheers Gary 👍
I want that tent but cba self water proofing it.
You don’t need to with the non pro…
Good call. Wasn't the gear that failed, it was the conditions.
Like you said, if it doesn’t feel right, no need to stick it out. That airpad looks decent for such I high R value and lower price
Loving it so far 👌
Lol ...the eating made me laugh
I think you should do a ”Mick Douglas” eating moment in all your future videos. 🤣
🤣🤣🤣
The rash was an aversion to ultralight camping, good decision to bail if you wasn’t feeling it! Ultralight is for 1% or extreme athletes, I’ll take comfort for a couple of kilos extra any day of the week 🍄
Must have been! 😆
build tents in the mountains, all here are beautiful. I'm from Vietnam, where are you?
UK
@@DaleyOutdoors yes my friend 👍
Will do some googling on it. Thanks!
Some cow parsnip isn't, it's giant hogweed
My 8yo son loved your little song about being hot an sweaty
Haha I might release it 😆
@@DaleyOutdoors he'd buy it!
Sorry conditions made you bail but you made the right choice - when its not fun it's time to go
On the contrary this was not a fail,if you aint feeling it dont do it, no point in being billy big bollox .,Excellent video keep it up.
hi, all credit to you ben for giving it a bash. mother nature can be somewhat harsh sometimes and it's knowing when to say, enough!
looking forward to the next video.
kind regards.
Thanks mate 👍
There's always another day Ben 👍
The Sleeping Bag looks like the Naturehike Rectangular Sleeping Bag Lightweight 800FP Goose Down Sleeping Bag
Yeah they’re the same products just branded with different names. You can get the Light Tour mat as a NatureHike branded one too.
Yup. A pillow is essential for me 😆
Thanks
Some good tips but a shout out to ua-cam.com/video/b95uPpaorBo/v-deo.html
as well as he puts these and a few more for the Lamb shank😅
Thanks, I've seen that video but couldn't find it in my watch history 👍
Hello Ben 🙋♂️.
Hope you are good !!
You done the right thing there
and bailed to be honest !!
The midges 🪰 would have
just eaten you alive - no point
in laying in a sweaty tent ⛺️ getting
your; 🥜🔩🌰 even more sweaty 🥵
as the night progresses !! You must
have pitched your tent 🏕 next to
to much 🐑 sheep 💩 !!
I would have done the exact same
and bought some 🍟 chips on the
way home 🏠!!
A few years ago a guy I know had the same
experience and bailed !! - when he went 🏠
the window 🪟 cleaner had popped round
to “do in inside” of his windows (with his dog) whilst his kids were playing outside.
His wife (now ex) had a
bit of explanation to do !! He arrived all; “red and blotchy” from the bites as well !!
Nice homecoming !!
Mind how you go !!
James 🫶✌️
Oh dear lol. Cheers James 👍
9:05 made my day 🤣
Good to hear it 😆
I think I will give light weight camping a miss. I like to enjoy myself while wild camping.
Don’t blame you! Common sense prevails. Good to show that there are times where you have to make that call.
fucking dying at "uhhhh mick douglas"
🤣
Mmmmm Mick Douglas 😂
🤣
@@DaleyOutdoors you’ve made me laugh on more than one occasion but that one did me up. 😂
That sleeping bag is identical in every way to Nature Hike sleeping bags - even the model number was the same
Yes they’re the same product just branded differently.
Interesting info.👍 Trying out a couple odd synthetic items for the warmer seasons.... but it will have its limits. Good call Ben.👍👍👍
Your shout out to Mick Douglas 😂😂😂😂
Hope that it's not the same Mick Douglas that was in Falling Down or you're in trouble
Hope not 😱
Use a tarp and bivvi then you are cool and can still be comfortable.
If you're not having fun no point in doing it. I've done the same thing.
Better to be safe than sorry, as you say.
I'd like to go lighter I just don't want to spend the money to get there. Outstanding job.
Cheers mate 👍
