When i started to learn the lean back a while back, i leaned to far back when the left hook came and got a right straight clean on the chin😂😂😂 sat me down good
Keep your right hand up to bury the straight while leaning back
@@jrock2019 i know brother that is the beauty of making mistakes and getting punched in the face, you learn from it.
That’s it brother we learn every day we Enter that square ring , perfect attitude to have you will improve
@@Tysonfury6-9 my G
That's because your never supposed to lean straight back in boxing even floyd has been caught pulling straight back many times before. it's a very dangerous yet sometimes effective technique this guy shouldn't be teaching this rolling under and tight slips to either side of your opponents line are most effective and safer for beginner's
I feel this would be an awful idea if you were the shorter fighter
It has nothing to do with hight, the guy is gonna aim for your head, just get you're head away from where it was and the guy is gonna miss, just don't abuse this technique,It's dangerous
@@abdelhakym8283 what he's saying is, if you have a reach disadvantage, leaning back far enough to avoid the hook will put you out of range for your own attack, but still in range of your opponents straight punches. For me, as a shorter guy, rolling under the hook puts me right inside where I can be effective and do damage. Hanging around on the outside is just punishing.
Step in and jab...Or use Tyson's secret move: The headbutt punch.
Ali's kryptonite
ME, I always go under.
The lean back is the last thing you'd want to do. Unless you're Floyd you have no business trying to pull this off. I bet you lean back...drop your hands ... just like you did ...and get knocked the f out as soon as they follow that hook up with a straight right...or a longer hook. Get real lads... Keep Your Hands Up, chin down, and ass off the floor

After 20 years of boxing, I've learned that the best way to defend a hook is to turn around and run away.
😀
😄.. well, there's no denying that it would be effective!!

Spar more and you’ll figure it out. It’s the only way.
Shoulders are definitely the best tell.
Two things
Shoulders
And
Sparring
You can stare at shoulders all day, that's why the easiest feints are just bouncing and popping the shoulders.
The real answer is thousands of hours of sparring.
Do a lot of shadow boxing and do bag work when doing this pretend someone is throwing punches at you try to slip then work on speed and countering
Never lean back… roll left/right body hook,hook
100%!!!
You ever see Tyson lean back? Lol, never once. This guy in the video is wrong here
You are right never lean but you should do a step back followed by a dash forward (as a shorter fighter this helped me)
@@griffinmurphy4841 it's wrong for me, dude has way more experience than me. I was just taught to not do it.
Lol do that in muay Thai or kickboxing
The first two he showed is the proper way to defend a hook. This guy trying to get you knocked out leaning back is the worst thing you can do especially with a straight right coming behind it
If you block, you have no chance of hitting him back, same goes with rolling, if you roll you can't see, and that'll get you knocked out, if you lean, you can quickly manage to land a jab right on his face....
Plus he's a Olympic Champion, show some respect and stop teaching him
@@Uzumaki4403 well if you roll you can stand in a better angle and hit some body or hooks back
@@user-zh6pu7qh8j If you roll, you can't make contact if you're opponent, it'll end up getting you knocked out

@@Tony_Jeffries Leaning back might work if you expect your opponent to throw only a single punch. But where do you lean back to if your opponent throws a combination or a flurry? By leaning back, you put yourself in a position where you might compromise your balance.
Stick to the basics mate, kids that are coming up or learning who try this will get knocked out. What do you think is following up after that hook? A straight right!
If they practice this mate - no it will not always be a knock out
@@Tony_Jeffries Kids will, especially in sparring. This is the kind of fancy stuff Floyd and other great boxers can maneuver and pull off, not beginners.

If you don't lean back far enough, you catching it. If you don't roll deep enough, you catching it. Either way, get the hell out the way
To be fair all 3 is right, I prefer leaning back and pivoting because that's what I'm most comfortable doing though
If he keeps leaning my lead hook, ima start following with my 2. Lights out!
Lean back is dangerous. Everyone of those defense techniques is good as long as you don't get hit.
You forgot about the shoulder roll. I know it's best for straight punches but it works for hooks too if you angle it right.
you know you're talking to a pro boxer who has tried all ways of defending the hook and found the lean back most effective.
@@tageochgabbe7630 I'm a retired pro boxer and coach myself.
Furthermore the effectiveness of any technique depends on the ability of the fighter. I didn't say the lean back was bad, I just said it was dangerous. I do it myself. It's just not the best. There is no best technique.
@@caszk4560 i think maybe that its his fighting style and maybe his sharing his experience for those who is comfortable with that technique

Blocking is the hardest but also the best for counting
Stepping back repeatedly will only cause the opponent to either abuse you by moving in with feints or to simply step in further when they throw and catch you when you’re leaning.
God save Tony !!!
I’m pretty sure an average persons first instinct when a fist comes at you is to lean back

Yeah im being devastated by an opponent that aggressively keeps using hook the entire match. Im still trying to figure it out that is why I stumbled upon this video.
Why wouldn't you want to Roll and stay close to counter leaning back then coming forward c'mon man equilibrium dude🤷
This is awesome. A lesson learnt in less than a minute. Can't wait to practice this
Lol...let us know how you made out
@@brianpalmer8636 it went great. I got knocked out in the 2nd round instead of the 1st, as usual. Great improvement on my part 😂😂😂
When should u use a roll then?
On some cases you can roll on hooks mate
Watched a few of your shorts and you've got some solid ideas , thanks for the tips and look forward to more of your videos
Thanks you man
I think only athletic guys with cat like reflexes such as floyd and rjr are able to pull that off.
Well i kinda like the lean back however now i only do that in sparring and i can't remove the habit. Problem is that you can't lean back forever so that you build up your opponent if he is a presure fighter. In that case its better to roll or block and circle out atleast from what i have experienced.
Thanks for sharing mate
Hey man, quick tip for you, rather than stepping back three times or something, step back twice and then step off to the side. When you're stepping back, make sure they're small steps and not massive leaps. All you want to do is get out of range.
Dude with the no how.
Leaning back loses a lot of balance and people tend to drop their hands
It looks cool now and then but you shouldn’t make a habit of that just like stepping in with a jab
What's wrong with stepping in with a jab?
Good Technique 👍
That's just Natural instinct great video love your channel.
As someone who practices Thai boxing for a decade it is indeed affective. The thing is it takes far more technique than just a block so it's harder for beginners to pull off
Useful
1 of the drills i do, it works
It depends on your fighting style. Iron Mike had the peekaboo style which he rarely leaned back.
I would roll under the punch, right hook to the body and left hook to the head and roll out to the left.
Can u make a vedio of how to play inside. It will be helpful to all shot guys like me pls#❣️
I think it is best to mix it up.
Yes mate this is so helpful good job
Thanks ma man, means a lot
Leaning back is an option but then you must have perfect reflexes and a perfect feeling for distance and most people don't
Thanks a lot
Thanks Dino for watching my videos
You can lean back but you don’t wanna do it as a beginner, it’s more for someone that’s advanced or knows how to do it properly, you can pull or “lean back” as opponent punches then as they pull back you fire off with a straight rear hand
Good to know, watching some of your videos to sharpen and improve my Skills, Might upload a video of me punching my Bob later, Great Videos 👍👍👍
All those are necessary against the swing. Depends in distance and circumstance. Hence the Art of Boxing.
Yes you are right - each defense got their best use
All three are good, the point is not to get hit and hit back, the roll always worked for me because I roll back with a counter hook or while I roll I do a body shot same time and finish it up with another punch and that is the case
I'd rather lean in, get behind the punch and roll them over my hip, but I love watching boxers dodge, they are so quick
Do you also box mate? thanks for sharing
A counter to that is back step forward into the lead hook
God bless u all
This move works
This is how you get knockout. This is how i got knocked out once, hook then straight right on my chin.
How would you defend mate?
You should only duck when you know you can’t lean back fast or far enough and you should only block when you can’t lean or duck
You can roll only if u wanna give him a boddy shot or a punch in face
If your smaller and need to close distance rolling is great also if your against a pressure fighter a block might allow you to to stand your ground better and not end up on the ropes. I'd agree stepping back is a safe bet but I like doing as much as I can to keep my opponent guessing.
It works pretty good from the roll if you’re short like me
All three are useful
I agree mate, each got their best use
I went in with an uppercut and it went down pretty well
Great move then mate
As a fighter shorter then manny I would be jumping in and out anyways so that works as well as I like to just get into clinch range and throw liver punches while upper cutting so I’ll be using this in my Arsenal
I ain't a boxer, but the roll one looked the best to me
lean back is great, until you don't lean back enough, or your opponent extends farther, and you get caught, especially since you are off balance.
Step back.
Love it
Glad you like it mate
Jus subbed to your channel. Good shit brother keep it up.
Thanks mate! - You can check all my videos here: ua-cam.com/users/TonyJeffries1videos
really any of those would work for a counter ! the lean back you can come back with a cross, the roll as your coming back up you can throw a hook to the body or the head
I’m convinced you’re either joking and doing exactly what not to do or you don’t know what you’re doing
Right hand tan sao with simultaneous left straight punch to face
Do you box mate?
Lean back, and wrestlers just smile. Boom there's my double leg. Ground and pound time
Well it's a good thing it's a BOXING match, right?
@@Ponkdonker in a fight anything goes, im talking outside the ring... but thanks for commenting
@@cashrules520 And thanks for your completely unhelpful and off-topic answer of what a "wrestler" would do on a fucking boxing technique video. I'm now going to watch a wresting technique video and comment "PUNCH HIM!".
You should mix all of them together. In MMA if someone is leaning back every hook I throw I'm not gonna aim for his head im gonna throw a hook behind his head and he leans right into place. If someone is only rolling Hooks ima gonna fient a hook and throw a headkick (slightly lower than you'd normally throw a headkick) when they duck. If you mix it up it's not gonna be as predictable and you can't easily time that hook
Hi mate, yes you are correct it's good to mix up and each defense got their best use scenario - Do you also box?
@@Tony_Jeffries boxing is a part of that training. Both sports have there own separate complexities.
Pulling back is an option, NOT always ideal. I anticipated the lean back and it set up the hard Straight Cross to the body. If they pull back (often) their body is stationary.
rolling is key if u dont dip your head too low (assuming you’re in a street fight or any martial art besides boxing).. even if u just in boxing, it generally just aint a good habit to roll too low.
I would say step back and pull the punch, blocking or rolling/slipping is too dangerous, but dropping your hands and leaning back can be dangerous for you
I don't get why yall hating. Leaning back is definitely safer than rolling or blocking. & No it doesn't take a professional to do this, I see it all the time in street fights
hahahahaha
You about to get your ass knocked out listening to this dude.
The first two were perfectly acceptable and encouraged.
Oh yeah, the OLYMPIC BOXER doesn't know what he's talking about. Please, share YOUR infinite wisdom with us. I'm sure you are way more experienced lol.
🤔 can you share your reason behind your comment mate? Do you also box?
1st two were correct. Not sure why there's a question mark. The pull back works well, but generally new boxers do that. They usually lift their chin, and get hit.
Can't you just get uppercutted when you try and roll after the hook and I feel like it's kind of hard to throw a jab a away with your hand with perfect timing I think leaning back and taking a step back then countering with a jab is better but whatever
@@wolfieplays2wolf199 Some of it depends on your body type. Obviously, a roll under the hook is easier for a shorter person with strong legs against a taller apponent. You will get an uppercut if you bend at the hips, and you will be off balance and not be able to put the full weight behind a counter punch. The roll is designed for the hook. You can just slip with the straight punches. The trick is to make them miss small, and you being close enough, and on balance/ within range to be able to counter. Your opponent creates an opening in their defence every time they attack. Boxing is basically ballroom dancing without music. Your waiting for a wrong step. I've also seen fighters throw a slightly bent straight punch using their elbow from their punching hand as a block and dipping their head behind the arm. This can work for a fighter with shorter levers. Obviously, the fighter throwing the hook could fake the head a rip you with a liver shot, because you lifted your elbow. The fella in the videos roll is fine. He uses his legs. I'm just questioning why he's saying they're wrong. Mayweather king of the pull back and counter. Also, uses the block and the roll for the hook. He's also great at changing the angles like Mike tyson. Getting off the railway tracks as I like to put it. This helps put your opponent off balance and not be able to hit you with power.
@@justinwillson3424 true true I'm 5'10 200 pounds but I have a 6 pack and muscle so I'm not just 200 pounds of fat so I don't have a lot of problems with rolling the only problem I have it is if someone uses a hook then you roll he trys to uppercut you then goes for hook or body shot so once the person gets the timing of your rolling down its the easiest knockouts that's why you saw Mike Tyson bring his head to the left or right then go under the hook so he's able to roll backwards and take step back with the roll them counter with. a hook
@@wolfieplays2wolf199 You sound like a solid individual. Your the same height as me. I train the younger guys now, but used to fight at light heavy 81kg (amateurs). I think that's about 180 pound.
