  • I was a bit surprised to get the email from Fashionphile saying they wanted to buy back the Louis Vuitton bag I'd bought from them a few months ago, but I was more surprised by their buy-back offer. Well...maybe not surprised, but definitely disappointed. It does strike home the point about how these luxury things we love aren't investments (with a few exceptions). So might as well buy what you like!

    I have had offers from Fashionphile to rebuy my bags. I agree it is a loss. I buy my bags for me. Handbags like cars are not investments. Their value usually decrease as soon as you walk away with them. There might be some profit if you bought a bag awhile ago and it went way up in price, but you are not going to get market value to resale the bag. People need to get away from that thinking. You make a good point.

      @@classicswithaquirk buying a bag with the intent to get very little use per wear and then resell isn’t usually a good plan. Even with brands like Chanel and Lv in order to see a small profit you have to have brought the bag and then wait years and years to sell.

    All things material that we use or wear decline in value except property. Very rarely are handbags investments. If we buy a bag and keep it in the closet for 20 years and don't use it, it probably has increased in value. Salespeople say bags are a good investment to get us to buy them. Truth is buying bags is an emotional purchase. It is based on a feeling. A few days ago I sold back a bag to Fashionphile. I received 75% of what I paid for it and got a 10% bonus because I chose to get a store credit instead of cash because I wanted to buy something else. Business is business. I can choose to do their deal or not. I buy and sell from them a lot. I live about 5 miles from their main showroom. If I have kept and used the bag for a year and now I am tired of it I sell it back to them. It's a fun process. How I justify it is I rented it for that period of time. Fashionphile is a reputable business and I trust them. We can choose what ever we want.

    This whole “keeping value” or “investment buying” is absolute bullshit, in my opinion. Buy what makes you happy and not what someone else says, and then you won’t have to worry about selling back. If one is hesitating or worrying about cost, then they shouldn’t be buying because it’s not smart fiscally. Additionally, one should not expect to be able to sell their used bag for what they paid for it, unless it had never been worn. Just like any other physical item, it does somewhat “depreciate” with every use. Individual sellers and bigger sites like Fashionphile love to use the term “below retail” to try and trick you into thinking you’re saving money…it should be below retail, it’s a used bag. That being said, I bought a On The Beach Kiragami set over the summer and I also received the “Refresh Program offer. I chose to keep mine because I love it and wear it. I wasn’t worried about “losing 25%” because I wasn’t even planning on selling. However, for a person who changes bags often, this might be a good fit, or they can consider renting bags also.

    • @classicswithaquirk
      @classicswithaquirk  2 роки тому +2

      I think “renting” a bag is a great way to look at the idea of buying and selling often. Yes, you lose some money on it, but if you wore the bag for a few months or years, that’s just getting your money’s worth and still getting some money back! Ultimately, absolutely, buy what you love! That’s what’ll make the price worth it.

    Agree so much... Anything that you actively wear and use is never going to be an “investment” where you get your money back. Even cars. The item depreciates in monetary value, so the rest of the value has to come from what you get from using it (using the bag many times with many outfits, driving the car to work, etc). Thanks for the video!

    I definitely buy with intention of using and keeping mine if possible forever. But i have recently sold my Speedy 30 Bandoulière in DE on poshmark because Fashionphile’s quote was only $950 for it. Barely use. Almost to none flaws. I sold it for $1,500 on Poshmark.
    But i have been so disappointed because the speedy 25 Bandoulière that i newly bought is tarnishing and the edges of the strap is peeling. One handle is also starting peel. It’s 4 months old. And this is my 2nd replacement. I am not new to this because my 30 also had the same issue years ago! Im kind off getting tired already. We pay so much for a bag that has so much issues. EXACTLY right! I've got an LV Alma PM and it's got some wear on the vachetta leather it needs to be replaced. But according to LV have to replace ALL the vachetta and then they will put the new and thinner leather on, and the cheaper hardware not gold plated, not brass. And remove the serial number. so all you have is the original canvas and zipper, everything else is new. It's just stupid because the replacements are just not as good as before. I'm just going to continue wearing the Alma and try to find a way around the problem. It's not too obvious now but it will show in future...I may just bite the bullet and go to a non LV repairer. They seem more sensible.

    At the end of the day they are a business and the fact that you can recoup around 70% of what you paid 6 months ago is not bad tradeoff, especially since the price was already heavily discounted. Sure LV is one of those brands that go up in value, but the 70% is roughly FP's standard. You say you are "losing" $350, but you've had 6 months to wear and enjoy the bag. You only lose if you expected to gain.

  • @meekada

    Such a well thought out video. I agree with you that these designer handbags don't really make you a fat profit as a lot of people like to claim. Yes, there will be that HTF item everyone's chasing and certainly, you will make a nice profit. But in most cases, I do think that luxury handbags are a depreciating asset with the reselling fees involved even with quarterly or semi-annual price increases. I'm pretty frugal in general and the two things that I spend money on are designer handbags and traveling. A handbag is something I carry with me every day so might as well carry something that makes me happy when I look at it. And travel...... because experiences are everything!

    • @classicswithaquirk
      @classicswithaquirk  2 роки тому

      I would absolutely agree with you about these items depreciating a majority of the time. Better to just buy what you love and will enjoy and not think about profit. It's always great to be able to sell something on and recoup some money, but profit is something else entirely.

    After years of active buying of luxury bags in the last three years (11 years in total), I've slowed down a lot. I took a 7 month break before puling the trigger on a Gucci Ophidia Shoulder bag. I'm really happy with it even though I know there's not a lot of resale value back on it. I've had not so great offers from Fashionphile on my popular LV bags for some reason and they are selling well over retail. Not sure why, for example, my Nano Speedy was offered only $800 and double zip pochette giant monogram for only $900 - both in like new condition (I hardly carried them because the straps are a bit on the tiny side and was digging into my shoulder). I passed on those offers for now. Live and learn. I also only buy brand new from the boutiques because I'm scared of getting a fake bag!

      You can still get a fake bag if it 's been bought and 'returned' with a superfake substitute. This has happened at high end stores and not even the SAs are able to detect the difference. This is why some brands no longer have the serial numbers and are using electronic tag devices. This is very hard on resellers, who can't access those devices. It's just getting more elite by the day. To me it's just a hobby and I've had fun with it. But that's really complicated especially if you're doing it alone. So most people will use an intermediary consignment store, or insist on meeting face to face in a bank in public to do a cash transaction. That seems sensible but it narrows the buyer scope to what's local for you.

    The other thing to be mindful of is that reseller sites also label things as “new” that are not. For example, I took a buyout from Fashionphile for a LV wallet. I had used it daily for a couple of months. It had no real signs of wear, but I’d have considered it in excellent condition as it was used. I sold it to them complete with box, dust bag, receipt, etc. Listed that piece as new and giftable. So I think now even when buying, that many items labeled as “new” really aren’t.

    I think when people consider bags investments the really mean that in terms of used luxury items, it retains more value than regular used items. I’ve bought and sold quite a few bags and always lost money. But I expected that. Getting half back for a used item is not bad. Fashion file prices are somewhat lower than other sellers but it’s a sure thing. RealReal is a crapshoot on the pricing so you never really know what to expect and the net resale you get is often not much different.

    I definitely agree that luxury bags are not monetary investments. Even though the prices have gone up both in the retail and preloved markets, they are to me considered depreciating assets.
    I’ve only recently dipped my toe into buying luxury handbags and SLGs, after years of watching luxury bag content on UA-cam. I have to think about the pieces that I want, the condition that I want, and at prices that I can stomach. I mostly purchased new from the boutique and have only purchased 3 pieces (all SLGs) that were new or excellent from Fashionphile when I couldn’t find them in the boutiques. But I paid less than current retail though not by much. I don’t want to spend a lot of time stalking websites or buying things that I don’t want in the boutiques to establish relationships with SAs so that they’ll think of me when that highly sought after piece comes into the store.
    At these high prices, all of my purchases are made with the intention that they are forever pieces. I have never sold any of my things and I don’t want to start now. When I no longer want something and if it is in sellable condition I will donate it. I do it with my clothes, shoes that don’t work out (the ones that work out I wear until they fall apart), home goods, and less expensive handbags. I’ve donated a bunch of vintage Coach and Dooney and Bourke over the last few years that were originally purchased by me in the late eighties and early to mid nineties. Am I kicking myself? Not really. I’ve gotten my use out of them and I don’t want to be in the business of selling my stuff. I like buying on eBay and Poshmark but I don’t want to be a seller. I don’t have the time. Those that do, more power to them.
    I don’t think I’ll actually donate my luxury pieces if the time comes. What I might end up doing is giving my close friends the right of first refusal to buy them at a fraction of what I paid. And if they’re not interested I will probably take them to Fashionphile if that is an option in the future. I will not get the best price in either scenario but they require the least effort, short of bagging them up and driving 5 minutes to my local Goodwill.
    I know this isn’t for everyone but it will keep me from buying too many luxury items and the ones that I do buy I will use for many years.

    • @MsKathyR100
      @MsKathyR100 2 роки тому

      One more thing to add (I couldn’t edit my second reply). Convenience comes at a price. For the seller, it comes in the form of a lower offer. For the buyer you will pay more for a highly sought after item. I paid $1000 including tax on a 5 year old Pochette Accessoires on the eve of LV’s price increase. It was in almost new condition with a little bit of patina. I don’t even want to look at how much they’re selling for now. eBay prices are high too but a little lower but most sellers won’t send to a PO Box. Fashionphile won’t either but they ship to my local Neiman Marcus. I’m never home to sign for packages and I can’t ship to my work.

You mentioned that you bought this bag underpriced. That means there's room to go up. That means you could sell it on any platform and probably clear a little more than what you paid. Couldn’t agree with you more. Bags are not investment. I lost $400 selling back to fashionphile on a Chanel gst. I’ve bought from them but I keep in mind their price if I want to sell it back as they tell you how much you’ll get. Plus what I’m buying I’ve made a conscious decision they need to stay with me for a long time. For example I bought a boy bag from them excellent condition caviar with ruthenium hardware I paid 4,500 and yet the buy back was for 3k. No thank you. I could see the investment if you bought Chanel at lower price and never used it to sell it now. But who the heck is doing that. We buy to use. And just like a car, the moment you use it. It drops in value.

    And that is the problem with buying luxury items.
    1. Selling only makes sense if you have a big following so you omit the middleman of a shop. Those creators never mention prices, but they very likely sell for close to retail or retail price.
    2. It's not always possible to predict everything. Some annoying features only come up after you've used the item for a while.
    3. It's very hard or even impossible to research more obscure and lesser known brands.

    Maybe they offered to buy it back for that amount because they know how much you got it for. If you were just selling to them without having first bought it from them, you might get more for it. However, most of those resellers are simply broad daylight robbers for how much they make from these businesses. I tried to sell some of my LV pieces and the reseller said they were going to take 40 percent of whatever they sold for. I was also going to pay the administrative fees from my 60 percent which would have left me with only 50 percent or less. So, you’re right. These pieces aren’t investment pieces except if you’re reselling them yourself.

Of course there are harder to get pieces you can sell for more/get your money back down the road, but that is highly unlikely. However, what is nice about buying luxury is that they do hold value a lot better than other goods. Thank you for making this video!! As a new UA-camr (aka not an influencer) I am happy that you have shared a story that is aligned with what I have been experiencing with Fashionphile...aka a much different picture than what is typically being presented. I have a long history of purchasing and selling to Fashionphile and unfortunately I don't a lot of positive things to say, other than they have a great return policy. I would estimate that approximately 25% of my purchases have had inaccurate descriptions with undisclosed flaws (talking significant structure loss, tears in leather and scratches that were cleverly hidden in all of the photos, either by angles for cleverly placed straps). While I would have kept some of these items if offered a discount, all I received from their customer service was the 'just return' and sent it back - same story you received. AND the best part is that I have seen these items resisted without my feedback or updated descriptions to account for the flaws I reported and at the same price I paid - crazy! Also, Fashionphile is making a huge profit...and this includes Chanel Classic Flaps - which are not exempt to the 50% mark-up that you referenced. Just last week, I submitted for a quote on a Chanel Medium Classic Flap, vintage lambskin in better condition that what I am currently seeing on their site for around $5k USD, and received a "buy-out" for $2500....for a CHANEL Classic bag?! Note, it has no tears, stains, chipping, worn corners, odor etc...and it hasn't been refurbished....even comes with Authenticity card. I share this...as I think there needs to be awareness that your experience is not unique and Fashionphile tends to low-ball their offers. Thanks for putting this out there!
