    As much as I love Smokey Stevie and Supremes music I am fed up of the big Motown events excluding all the other great Motown artists who made amazing tracks and the list is endless...Junior Walker, Brenda Holloway, Kim Weston, The Originals, The Contours, Chris Clark, Mary Wells, The Velvelettes etc etc etc...these singers/groups are rarely mentioned at Motown events but Ms Ross and Smokey always get centre stage and always get the attention. I suppose because they made Berry the most money, but it's sickening.

    Motown was the first black-owned record label created by Berry Gordy. The story started where he signed a lot of local acts like Diana Ross, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Rick James, Commodores, Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Smokey Robinson, Teena Marie, The Jackson 5, The Temptations and many others. Back then, a lot of artists wanna to sign with Berry Gordy, so he didn’t allowed his artists to be songwriters in their own right.

    Diana Ross was NOBODIES FRIEND !! In all honesty Florence and Mary were real friends, Diana was a 3rd wheel. They say before Diana met Mary and Florence she was a loner. I always felt the ending of Florence's career was deeper than her being an alcoholic; because Florence stood her ground and called out the BS and they were mad. The audacity of Berry Gordy to think Florence had to dim her light for Diana Ross. Show business doesn't have to be so cut throat if there wasn't so many snakes. It didn't even stop there, when Florence was making solo music Berry Gordy was sabotaging her by threatening ABC records to shelf her. This man literally wanted to see Florence at her lowest. Diana was aware of everything he was doing and that whats makes her a shady person.
    The problem wasn't Diana wanting to be famous, the issue is how she went about it. Mary stated in her book Diana intentionally plotted to seduce Berry so the Supremes could get special treatment. I also side eye Mary a bit because she was very complacent and wanted fame just as much as Diana did, but she wasn't has bold or ruthless. Mary was defiantly a fence sitter. Berry wasn't dumb, he knew Diana was using him. Probably why I don't feel bad that Berry played Diana in the end. Berry played a lot of his artists , but he made Dina a top priority and a movie star so she couldn't complain.
    Both Berry Gordy and Diana Ross were greedy narcissists; I can bout imagine all the whispering and pillow talking they were doing. Diana was no genuine friend, nobody was asking her to hold Florence's hand. Friendship is about looking out for each other. Diana could have easily had a woman to woman conversation with Florence but instead she deliberately wanted the attention on herself.

      Oh you know Berry and Diana Flo and Mary personally.? No you don't you just regurgitating the same old character assassination bull crap,,,Nothing you wrote is original. Flo destroyed herself and Berry had no leverage over ABC records please. You and the rest are blaming Berry and Diana for other peoples failures. If it wasn't for those two nobody would know who Mary and Flo were and the rest of the Motown acts as well.....put down the hater juice...

    • @Vincent50
      @Vincent50 10 місяців тому

      Well said but some folks don’t want to believe it. Berry Gordy F’d Flo out of everything and her ignorance and wanting to be rid of Motown she didn’t read her release papers only signed them and when her shyster lawyer saw how negligent she was he helped himself to the money Flo got from Motown upon her release. She was broke within a year and half. Also if folks think Berry Gordy didn’t sabotage Flo’s career then they’re freaking crazy. How in the hell they think he was going to watch a former Supreme start her solo career when Motown had a lot of their money in Diana Ross and the Supremes. Threatening calls to Flo as well was going on. Flo was just beginning to talk before she died. Flo wouldn’t play the game and it cost her and her drinking and all did her in. Mary wanted fame just like Diana and did what she was told but also saw how Berry did Flo and she made sure she’d not open her mouth. When Mary started to grow up finally it was too late for her career with the Supremes sunk as money was pumped even more into Diana’s career. Diana Ross was always about herself. People don’t get to the top being nice … well not all of them are mean and ugly. Diana and Berry have stated they wanted it all and they weren’t gonna let their relationship get in the way. They had a plan and Berry saw she was with him every step of the way so he made sure his investment in her and the group paid off. That’s Show Business for u.

They recorded in different studios because Marvin wouldn't stop smoking weed and she was pregnant. Not because they didnt like each other. However he tells that story to make Diana the bad guy? Marvin even admitted he could've handled that better. Marvin showed up at her famous Ceasars Palace concert in 79 and sang with her didnt look like two people that didnt like each other. That Gladys Horton story reeks of BS does anyone believe Diana tried to run down a blind kid!! come on now... It sounds like something distorted or made up out of jealousy (horton) or sell books (Posner)

    Some of this, if not all of sounds like it was true! I'm a singer, who never made it big! I was inspired by Motown, and other singers and record companies! But Motown to my understanding, had a dark side! Berry Gordy, made stars out of people. But to my understanding, he wasn't a nice boss/ supervisor to work under. I wanted to be at Motown! Maybe it's good that I never did! Maybe another record company and supervisor would have. And still may be better for me! Now Motown and berry Gordy did a good thing. They got good music started by black people during the Civl Rights Movement. And they crossed over real good. Nobody tried to stop them. Many white people seemed to like them. Maybe the KKK even like their music. But not their race! Motown made history in music and life. Not just here in the United States, but around the entire world 🌏🌎🌍!

    • @tubester4567
      @tubester4567 9 місяців тому

      No you didnt. This is a massive lie. The first popular music was classical for hundreds of years, like Opera and orchestral music.. Then in the 18th century the orchestras evolved into big band with or without vocalists, which black people appropriated and called Jazz. The Jazz genre focused on improvisation, because most of the black musicians didnt read and write music, and many were illiterate in the early days.
      Various forms of western folk music existed in Europe and the US for hundreds of years, The black blues was derivative of western folk music. So called black music uses the same song structure and time as existing western folk music, Songs constructed in AABA, usually in 4/4 time. This is a very western thing.
      The first black artists were produced and mentored by white record producers and musicians.
      You can listen to the earliest African music from Africa, and their music is completely different. Mostly repetitive drum rythyms, with vocal harmonies, in very odd time formats. Of course Africans had no understanding of chords, or timing, or any theory. They didnt have pianos, brass instruments, or really any instruments except drums.
      Theres nothing out of Africa that comes close to western music. Blues was the black version of existing folk music using very similar song structures, which makes sense given the influence of white record producers who packaged songs in that format to sell to a mostly white audience.

      Beethoven and Amadeus were blak dudes by the way. I am not sure why you brought up Africa, but I agree with you on that part - since we are NOT African, which is why Africans can't do what we do! If we were Africans, there would be tons of African Al Greens, David Ruffins, R. Kelly's, etc.
      Now... Compare that to whyte Americans and British and a few other European artists. Note the similarities in abilities, although we could easily argue that the British do it better because they studied from the source - blak Americans!

      Many of the black Motown artists from the 60's have given interviews over the years about what it was really like to be a part of the Motown Family. Some artists were indeed treated better than others. Check out the interviews of Mary Wilson, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Ashford and Simpson to name a few. They were all part of the Motown family "from the 60s" and the story they tell is that not everybody got along. The business was dog-eat-dog back then.

    I really do not get the Diana hate at all. The SORING FAME of the Supremes.. was absolutely ALL BECAUSE it was Diana Ross that the public fell in love with. Diana had NO CONTROL over that. Her light was just brighter, she had that “IT” factor…, just like Michael was the star of the Jackson five. Mary, Flo, Barry etc… should ALL BE THANKFUL TO DIANA.. because she was the Supremes!!!
    After Diana left, she was not responsible for the careers of the other Supremes .. Diana is not in any way the reason their careers were basically non-existent after Diana’s departure.
    It was because of the Jealousy Mary had for Diana that the 2000 tour did not take place… she said she wanted equal treatment and the whole thing fell apart.. that is not Diana’s fault … the truth is… Mary and Flo had not had any type of successful music career in over 25 years after Diana left the Supremes… but Diana … had been a megastar the whole time .. constantly selling out concerts for decades after her departure… so I’m sorry Mary.., but when it comes to business.., you were not equal… no where remotely equal to what Diana was bringing to the table.
    Also .., it was the girls jealousy and hate for Diana that was the strain on their friendship and relationship. For real… if you had friends always putting you down and hating on you.., you would not want that negativity either.., so I don’t blame Ms. Ross… she always kept it private and classy… and just left the whole situation alone… she did not ABANDON THEM.. she moved on… that is not the same thing!!
    Diana left the group with 10 number one hits, and superstardom… now the remaining members could not capitalize off of that mega exposure… are you all really gone blame Diana for that??
    The Diana hate is really unfair and wrong… those great opportunities.., and the great ride they all had in the Supremes… was because of DIANA ROSS … PERIOD!!!!!

He took young, talented black men and women on tours (theaters) in the South; (Motortown Revues ) because racism and segregation stopped them from appearing in other venues (white). Their tour buses were shot at by racist townspeople; they couldn't get gasoline at certain stations; they don't serve "niggers." And now you are going to tell me Berry Gordy, Jr.'s Motown Records didn't meet its potential? You are going to let a white man (Russian at that) validate our brother Berry's success?
