  • In this video, we replace this Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series' hard drive with a solid state drive (SSD) and re-install Windows and Dell drivers.
    Note that the screws under the keyboard must be re-installed before re-installing the keyboard. We forgot to do that in the video and had to go back and fix it. Oops.

      I’m glad you liked the video! If I remember correctly, it depends on the factory configuration. If it has the NVMe slot, that SSD should work. Otherwise, you’re stuck with 2.5” SSDs. Good luck with the upgrade!

      If your new SSD is equal to or greater than the capacity of the old hard drive, you can use something like Clonezilla to clone the drive. Otherwise, you can just re-install or see if there is another tool to copy the data.

    • @G6TechnologyServices
      @G6TechnologyServices  4 роки тому

      Thanks! That could happen for a few reasons. Make sure you are using the official Microsoft media creation tool to create the install USB flash drive. www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
      If the drive still isn't being recognized, make sure that external USB drives are included in the startup order or use the temporary boot menu to select the USB drive. You can also try using a different flash drive and a different USB port on the computer. In some cases, you may have to toggle between legacy and UEFI mode or disable secure boot temporarily. I would save those as a last resort and make sure to set them back how they were after you are finished.

    • @G6TechnologyServices
      @G6TechnologyServices  4 роки тому +1

      The Windows boot drive is always C. If you replace the hard drive with an SSD, you will only have C, except if you have a CD/DVD drive, then you should have D as well. If you remove the CD/DVD drive and install the old hard drive in its place using an adapter similar to this one [ amzn.to/32FSCjx ] then that will usually be D. If the old hard drive has multiple partitions, like a recovery partition or something, you could have more letters, like E and F. Hope that answers your question.

    • @G6TechnologyServices
      @G6TechnologyServices  4 роки тому

      I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Dell uses 9.5mm drives. If you go to dell.com/support and put on your Service Tag, you can go to the Manuals and Documents section and look for the Specifications PDF. That will tell you which size optical drive the laptop came with. If you can't find it, give me the complete model number, like Inspiron 15-3558, and I'll try to find out for you.

    Great video man, Just wanna ask if we can use the old HDD as a regular drive with SDD in place of Optical drive? Please make a video on this too for the same Inspiron 15 3000 model. Thanks

    • @G6TechnologyServices
      @G6TechnologyServices  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, you can do that. You will need a drive caddy like this one [ amzn.to/2LaPoja ]. It is recommended to put the SSD in the HDD location and put the HDD in the optical drive bay since the optical drive usually connects at a slower speed. If you need to do it the other way with the SSD in the optical drive bay, it will still work, but you won't get the best speed from the SSD. I don't have that computer anymore since the upgrade was for a customer. Next time I get one in, I will make a video about it since this seems to be a popular request.

    I have dell Inspiron 15 3000 laptop. I installed the ssd as you did but unable to move os from HDD to SSD. How can I move my OS to SSD without losing data and activation?

    • @G6TechnologyServices
      @G6TechnologyServices  3 роки тому

      If you have Windows 10, it should still be activated if you are only replacing the storage. You could re-install a fresh copy of Windows 10 if you had Windows 10 previously and it should remain activated. If you want to retain your data and settings, the best option is a cloning tool like Clonezilla. There are others out there as well. Most cloning tools require the destination (new) drive to be equal to or larger than the source (old) drive.

    I have nothing in the cd-rom slot, how can I replace the cd-rom with an ssd disk, thanks

    • @G6TechnologyServices
      @G6TechnologyServices  3 роки тому

      If the laptop did not ship from the factory with an optical (CD/DVD) drive, it may not be possible. You would have to check to see if the connector is on the motherboard and then get the appropriate adapter cable. Replacing the optical drive with an SSD is only necessary if you want to have two SSDs or HDDs in the computer. The recommended method is to replace the existing HDD with an SSD, then install the old HDD in the optical bay if you need two drives. That gives the SSD the faster connection since most laptop optical drive connections are not SATA III.

    Hi Phillip, first of all I really like to thank you for making detail video for upgrading SSD, as it will help me in memory upgrade. I recently ordered a 4GB DDR3L RAM and this video will help me.
    I have DELL inspiron core i3 3558 laptop with 1 TB and 4GB memory. I recenlty reset my windows 10 by using factory reset settings with builtin windows option. I like this feature of DELL as you told also.
    I have few questions if you like to reply. I would also like to mention here that i have read all comments and it helps me about my few queries and you have multiple replied to all queries with calm response :)
    1. I am upgrading my laptop with existing 4GB memory with additional 4GB (makes 8GB) for working especially for Matlab 2020 .As i feel very helpless to run this program and wait so long time. so this memory upgarde of 4Gb worth it for software like Matlab?
    2. If i upgarde with SSD atleast 500GB as you have told my machine works more faster for running these programs?
    3. If I like to add SSD with my existing 1TB how it is possible to keep both HD and SSD and then run my softwares from SSD?
    4. I am also planning to install dual operating system (Ubuntu v16 or higher) for ROS programming. so what you suggest more memory (or 8GB enough), install SSD alone or parallel or something else.
    I know my queries are a bit long here. Pls answer them and thank you for all your support.

    • @G6TechnologyServices
      @G6TechnologyServices  4 роки тому +2

      I'm glad you liked the video, thanks for watching!
      Generally, upgrading the RAM and replacing the hard drive with an SSD result in the best performance. I looked up the requirements for MATLAB R2020a (if that's the product you are using), and they do recommend 8 GB of RAM and an SSD. I would definitely suggest installing the SSD and at least 8 GB of RAM since that will increase overall performance quite a bit.
      Apparently the 3558 comes in two versions, one with a CD/DVD drive and one without. If yours has the CD/DVD drive and you don't need it, you can use a caddy like this one amzn.to/3aLPsNy that replaces your CD/DVD drive to install your old hard drive. The SSD should be installed where the hard drive was and not in the optical bay caddy for best performance. If your laptop does not have the CD/DVD drive option, there is no way to retain the old hard drive internally. They do make external adapters like this one amzn.to/3aJGhNf that let you turn the hard drive into an external drive you can plug in via USB.
      If you want to run Linux, I would recommend using a virtualization program, like VMware Player, which you can download for free for non-commercial use here: www.vmware.com/products/workstation-player/workstation-player-evaluation.html . Just click the download link in the blue box where it says "Try Workstation 15.5 Player for Windows". When you install it, there is a screen asking for a license, but there is an option to select the free non-commercial license. With virtualization, you can run Linux inside Windows, so you can use both at the same time. RAM is important when working like that since there are essentially two computers running at the same time. If you are going to be working only in Linux and won't have much going on in Windows, the 8GB of RAM should be fine. If you are going to be running a heavy workload in Windows and Linux at the same time, you may want to increase the amount of RAM you plan to install to support the workload. The laptop specs show a maximum configuration of 8 GB of RAM, but it often works with a higher amount anyway. Just be aware that it isn't officially supported.
      I hope I've answered everything for you. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    • @G6TechnologyServices

      If Windows 10 is currently activated on the computer, when you re-install Windows on the SSD, it should automatically activate using the digital license associated with the computer, so there is no need to use a product key. Microsoft Office will need to be re-activated once installed. If you have an Office 365 subscription or linked your one-time license to a Microsoft account, all you need to do is log in with your Microsoft account to activate Office. If you have purchased a standalone copy of Microsoft Office that has not been linked to a Microsoft account, you will need to locate the product key.

You can also clone your old drive to the new one if the new one is larger or the same size as the original drive.

    • @G6TechnologyServices
      @G6TechnologyServices  3 роки тому

      The capacity doesn’t impact performance. Get whatever capacity is appropriate for you. If you’re using more than 300 GB on your existing 1 TB hard drive, I would go for the 1 TB SSD. If you’re only using a small amount of that 1 TB hard drive, like 100-200 GB, the 500 GB would be more cost effective.

    I have hdd in main drive, now I've purchased ssd and caddy.
    Planning to put ssd into main drive and hdd into optical bay.
    So installing windows is same as installing windows in new drive right??
    And, if I reset the c drive of my hdd, it will just completely become an storage drive only right??

    • @G6TechnologyServices

      Yes, you can install Windows on the new SSD the same as any drive. Just select the unformatted SSD during setup and it will install there. The Windows installer will automatically create any required partitions during installation. You don't need to format or partition the SSD ahead of time. If you install Windows on the SSD, it won't touch the HDD and it will be left as it is. If your current HDD has Windows on it already and you install Windows on the new SSD, you will be able to boot from either drive. If you don't need any of the current data from the HDD, just format it and create a single simple partition for data storage. Hope that helps.

      It depends on what you are looking for. If you are just doing basic tasks, like browsing the web and composing text documents, upgrading to an SSD will improve overall performance when booting up the computer or launching applications. RAM is important as well. If you have less than 4 GB, it may still seem slow. We usually recommend 8 GB at a minimum. If you are trying to do more resource-intensive tasks, like gaming, 3D modeling, or video editing, you would be better off looking for a computer with a more powerful processor and GPU. I hope this is helpful.

      It is always good to exercise due care and caution when working on a computer. There are always things that can go wrong and cause harm to the computer, but, if you follow the directions carefully and take your time, it shouldn't be too difficult. The most likely thing to happen is to break plastic clips when prying the case apart. If one or two break, it isn't a big deal. Just go slowly and watch the video or research if you aren't sure.

      Windows 10 will still activate if you don’t use the Dell recovery image. The Dell recovery image is just a convenience because it includes all needed drivers and software from Dell. You do not have to upgrade the RAM. You can upgrade only the HDD to SSD and it will work. I usually recommend at least 8 GB of RAM for power users. 4 GB might be fine if you don't have many applications and browser tabs open or use resource-heavy applications. You can always upgrade to SSD and see how it performs and then if it is still a little slow, upgrade the RAM later. It might be more convenient to do them at the same time, though. If you don't mind opening the case twice, you can wait and do the RAM later.

If your laptop has a CD/DVD drive that you don't need, you can remove the CD/DVD drive and install a drive caddy like this [ amzn.to/3o4zDs4 ] where you can install your old HDD. Hi there. I upgraded the RAM of my Dell Inspiron 3567 i5, 7th Gen laptop from 4gb to 8gb (2x 4gb RAM). The RAM speeds differ, one is 2400 and the other is 2133. Will the 2400 downclock to 2133 speed? Also the one is a 1Rx8 and the other is 1Rx16, is this an issue or will it be compatible? The reason I am asking is because my laptop is running extremely slow, the disk usage is always 100% and memory around 45%. Is the RAM an issue or is my HDD an issue? Will getting an SSD help or will changing the RAM help, or both?

    • @G6TechnologyServices
      @G6TechnologyServices  2 роки тому

      Yes, generally higher speed RAM will run at a lower speed if the system can't support the higher speed. RAM modules don't have to be the same capacity. The manual usually specifies the largest capacity module per slot and the overall maximum capacity across all slots. If you are experiencing very slow performance with the disk at 100%, it would be the HDD, not the RAM. Replacing the HDD with an SSD will make a big improvement. You can always upgrade the RAM later if you want to try to get even more performance out of it. If you're not using more than 45% of the RAM, there isn't any need to add more. If you find it always over 80% or so, then it might be good to consider increasing it.

    • @G6TechnologyServices
      @G6TechnologyServices  4 роки тому

      I would say nothing smaller than 250 GB, but it really depends on how you use the computer. A good way to see what size SSD might be good is to look at the size of your current hard drive and compare that to the current usage. If you have a 500 GB hard drive that is almost full, maybe upgrade to a 1 TB SSD. Conversely, if you have a 1 TB hard drive with barely 100 GB used, a 250 GB or 500 GB SSD might be more economical. In any case, they all perform the same, it is just up to you to decide how much space you need and how much money you want to spend.

      It usually speeds up the computer quite a bit. If you have a quad core Pentium and 4 GB of RAM, I would say to go for it! Maybe increase the RAM to 8 GB while you're in there. If it is only a dual core CPU, the SSD will still help, but I find that with Windows 10, dual core CPUs spend a lot of time at 90-100% usage, so it will still be a bit slow.

      Technically, you can probably open the program, but it won't perform very well. According to the AutoCAD system requirements ( knowledge.autodesk.com/search-result/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/System-requirements-for-AutoCAD-2019-including-Specialized-Toolsets.html ), they recommend a 4 GB discrete GPU. The 3000 series only has integrated graphics. 3D modeling programs and video games rely heavily on the GPU, so having only integrated graphics or a low-spec GPU will negatively affect performance, possibly to the point where it is unusable. You can try it and see if it is acceptable for your needs. Upgrading the 3000 series with an SSD won't improve 3D performance. Something from this list will perform much better: www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/sc/laptops?appliedRefinements=6149,6157,6143,6151,12522,12521,12520,6094 and this particular model looks like the cheapest option with a good GPU and comes with an SSD installed already: www.dell.com/en-us/shop/gaming-and-games/dell-g7-17-gaming-laptop/spd/g-series-17-7790-laptop/gn7790dmqts. It is definitely not the easiest laptop to work on, but if you get a copy of the manual from the Dell support site, follow the directions carefully, and take your time, it should be fine. Make sure to use plastic pry tools to avoid scratching the computer. You'll also need to either fresh install Windows on the new SSD or clone the old hard drive to it. If your new SSD is the same size or larger than the old hard drive, that process is easy with cloning tools. If you want to fresh install Windows, make sure to prepare the install media ahead of time if you don't have access to another working computer. If you still feel uncomfortable doing it, try contacting a local computer shop and ask for a price quote. It usually isn't too expensive. If you're in the US, you can also mail it to us and we can do it, but it is probably cheaper to get a local shop to do it because of the two-way shipping costs. Good luck!

      Just to make sure I understand, you want to replace the optical (CD/DVD) drive with an adapter so you can have your old hard drive in the computer at the same time as the new SSD? That should work. I haven't tested it, so I can't guarantee that it will work, but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't. It seems that the optical drives used in laptops are fairly standard, so something like this should work: amzn.to/2WSsxsA. I haven't tested or used that part, it is just a random selection from Amazon.

      It looks like that laptop supports a 2.5" SATA SSD like this one: amzn.to/37b4V9w .
      Autodesk recommends 8-32 GB of RAM as well as other recommended specs which you can find on their website here: knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/System-requirements-for-Autodesk-Revit-2020-products.html . You can start with the RAM if you have less than 8 GB currently, but 3D modeling software relies heavily on the GPU, so the integrated graphics on the laptop might not allow for the best performance even with upgrades.

      Hi, the Inspiron 15-3567 only takes 2.5" SATA drives, not M.2 drives. You could take the hard drive out, install the SSD where the hard drive used to be, and then use an adapter like this amzn.to/3aVyKfo to re-install the old hard drive if you don't need the optical drive. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching the video!

      Here's the service manual [ topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/inspiron-15-3567-laptop_service-manual_en-us.pdf ]. The procedure is similar to what is shown in the video. Look at page 41.
      The spec sheet [ topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/inspiron-15-3567-laptop_reference-guide_en-us.pdf ] says the system uses 2133 MHz DDR4 SODIMM memory. If the system currently has a single 4 GB module, just add another one like this [ amzn.to/2I18UNO ] to give you 8 GB. If it has 2 2GB modules, you can replace both of them with 4 GB modules or a single 8 GB module, which would give you room to add another 8 GB if you wanted to upgrade to 16 GB in the future.

      I'm glad you liked the video. We usually recommend Samsung SSDs. The Samsung 870 EVO is the current generation. Here's a link to the 2 TB version. You can choose a lower capacity drive if you want. Make sure to prepare a Windows 10 install USB drive before replacing the drive. amzn.to/3CP9Nj2

    A normal 2.5" SSD will fit a laptop?

    • @G6TechnologyServices
      @G6TechnologyServices  Рік тому

      Yes, depending on the laptop. A lot of newer laptops don't support 2.5" drives to save space. Some laptops support both 2.5" and M.2. Some will have physical positions for both, but may only have the connections for one, depending on which option was ordered. You'd have to check the manual or open it up and look to be sure.

      Yes, if it is currently running on a 2.5” HDD, then a 2.5” SSD will work. Make sure you create a bootable install USB drive for Windows or whatever OS you want before changing it out if you don’t have access to another working computer.

      @@G6TechnologyServices Thanks for the help, I'm totally unfamiliar with working on laptops, but I've built a couple desktops. I knew a 3.5" HDD wasn't in the laptop, so I wasn't sure if laptops had special SSD form factors too. Great video, doesn't look too difficult!

      If your laptop has a CD/DVD drive, you can use an adapter bracket like this one amzn.to/3coJgvv to install the old hard drive in the optical bay if you don't need the CD/DVD drive. Make sure to put the SSD in the hard drive bay and the old hard drive in the optical bay since the speed of the optical bay is usually slower than the hard drive bay.

    was the speed difference worth it?

    • @G6TechnologyServices
      @G6TechnologyServices  5 років тому +1

      It is usually worth it, but it depends on the computer. We usually only recommend doing an SSD upgrade if the computer is relatively new, has a decent CPU, and enough RAM. The best results usually come from computers with a nice quad-core (or better) CPU, but not enough RAM and a regular hard drive. We upgrade the RAM to 4-8 GB and replace the hard drive with an SSD and the computer is easily 2-3 times faster in all areas. If the CPU is on the lower end or you have less than 4 GB of RAM installed and don't plan to upgrade it, there may still be a difference, but not as noticeable since there will be other factors limiting the performance.

      Generally, yes, they can all take an SSD. I would need the exact model number to look up the spec sheet to see what form factor (2.5" or M.2) you would be able to install. It would be something like Inspiron 15-3542. The 3542, for example, only takes 2.5" SATA SSDs, while other models can take an M.2 SSD.

      If you're having performance issues with a game (low FPS, freezing, etc.), it is most likely GPU or CPU related. Upgrading to an SSD probably won't make much difference except for initial loading time and loading new scenes or assets during the game where it has to read from the disk.
