Grateful Dead -We Bid You Goodnight - Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir,Phil Lesh,Brent Mydland, Mickey Hart & Bill Kreutzman - Alpine Valley Music Theater in 1989.
Never missed The Alpine Valley shows living in Milwaukee, and was blessed to see The last show in Chicago.Tried seeing them as much as I could I will never forget the shows I was able to make it :) Even got a miracle for New years once.I miss those days so bad it tears my heart apart still sometimes.I miss The others at shows that became my family. My love to all my Brothers and Sisters that are not physically in my life now,but will forever be in my soul. Peace to all our Brothers and Sisters!!!
We hitched from Madrid NM to this venue. Outran a tornado in Nebraska with a flatbed trucker. The rains followed us. It rained for days. My wool kept me safe and warm. Thankful for such freedoms of my youth!
From what i've heard this is an old folk/gospel tune that was sung a lot at funerals... So with that in mind, Jerry, Lay down dear brother, lay down and take your rest, won't you lay your head upon your saviours breast. We love you, oh but jesus loves you the best, and we bid you good night, goodnight, goodnight. Thank you Jerry, for everything... No matter how much time passes, No our love will Not Fade Away. Forever Grateful
I miss Jerry like I miss being 7 years old again. His light shone so bright upon us all and those that were lucky to be there are blessed. I still feel his light and other times I can barely see, but I certainly can say, "What A Long Strange Trip It's Been" and Jerry is truly missed.
Me too , I was walking out and heard them go into the first verse and turned in disbelief. A brother walked up to me and said the last time they did it was the closing of Winterland. Special night, special show
I remeber just dropping to my knees on that muddy Alpine lawn when they busted this out - not in prayer of course - I was in shock b/c knew they hadn't played it for about 15 years or so. They sang it beautifully. What a magical night. Anyone got a time machine? I need to get back there.
A is for alpine, that wonderful venue, b is for the beast at the back of the drum kits--scare all of us who'd not be good. I remember right well. Walkin in east Troy just like uncle John. I love u oh but Jerry lugs u best. Bid u good show, good night, all right.
It was the first "Goodnight"in 11 years. As I "spilled out into the parking lot", some guy came running up to me and pals saying, "When was the last time they did "Goodnight?" We were so out there from the awesomeness of the show - and from psychotropic substances - that were like, "Who knows?!?!?" and the guy says, "Oh man, I gotta find some real 'Heads". Great moment!
The rain, the black ruddy carpark--the magic, muddy weekend. Like to find a ride like that once more--like to take it just one more time again. Might as well.
I ALSO have sung this to my two sons since the second one was in the womb....every night for several years...my son is NOW 11 years old has been asking for this to be sung to him...he's growing and regressing, one step ahead a few back. He was so surprised to hear someone other than me sing this - funny kid. 1991 Boston was a good Bid You.
@Dashandfriends this is a wake song from the bahamas that goes back many years before the dead. they learned their version from a recording of joseph spence. also i miss brent :( everything after brent was trash imho.
@Dash&friends "This is their only religous song" I humbly/respectfully (really, no snark) disagree. Can't speak 4 any1 but me, but I find "Ripple" totally religious, a perfect hymn/psalm/prayer. I've heard (who knows if rly tru; open 2 correction if any1 knows bettr) that Jerry didn't like 2 play it at shows bcs he felt it holy, sacred, not 2 b sung lightly. And of course "Samson & Delilah" got 2 GD by way of Rev. Gary Davis (tho he didn't write it). And "Estimated Prophet"?? C'mon now!
@whillop Probably not....but I loved it. I hit all the Alpine Shows, including the Stevie Ray show where his helicopter hit a new ski hill they were building. Can't remember if this was the year where they did 5 shows in a row.....might have been earlier in the late 1980's.
@ifthedrugfits That's poignant and sad, yet awesome at the same time. Think I'll have the same done at my passing......either that or get myself stuffed and put in a Lazy Boy with a beer in one hand and a pipe in the other, then lowered into my hole.
I too was there that night. Every time I pop in Downhill form Here or listen to my recordings of these shows, I gell "i WAS THERE!..." I don't care who if anyone is there, it just needs yelling.
@looselucy115 my dad always sang it to me when i was like five and now i only get to see him like 6 times a year : ( but i still love this song and listen to it every time i go to bed
@Rasseroo and why on Earth would you not like Jesus at all? I would jump off a bridge for Jerry, though it certainly is easier loving Jesus for Jerry, or better yet Jesus.
i first discovered incredible string band than the dead, and when i heard this for the first time a giant smile was drawed on my face. two of my favorite bands, so far themselves, had a point of connection and this song always makes me smile and happy. (go listen: "a very cellular song - incredible string band")
Jesus loves YOU the best. Thank you for Jerry, Brent and this song. I love you Jesus. reveal

Got here because my dad past away on saturday.
I don't listen to the dead, but this will be playing at his funeral.
I'm sorry for your loss. They say time heals all wounds. But, when it comes to losing a father or mother, the loss is only lessened by it.
has it really been 18 years without Jerry? I miss the music and i miss the smile when he got it just right.
I miss Jerry like I miss being 7 years old again. His light shone so bright upon us all and those that were lucky to be there are blessed. I still feel his light and other times I can barely see, but I certainly can say, "What A Long Strange Trip It's Been" and Jerry is truly missed.
Once in a while, in the strangest of places 🙏🕉
I was at this show. What a magical moment in a magical night. Thank you all, and I missy you Jerry.

We are there right now. Sharing our memories and crying while listening to this harmony

I remember being there that night, and how excited i was to hear them play this.
Brent and Pigpen were probably the best, keith was great too but.... he brought donna with him so i'm not quite sure i can forgive him for that
This is the first song my son Dean would sing back to me....in 2 year old english.... then Barney ruined everything.
I ALSO have sung this to my two sons since the second one was in the womb....every night for several years...my son is NOW 11 years old has been asking for this to be sung to him...he's growing and regressing, one step ahead a few back. ive sang this song to my 2 year old every night since she was born, and now she always asks for me to play it on the computer haha
15 thumbs down really - i bid you good night
THIS WOULD BE GREAT BACKGROUND MUSIC TO A HIT SCENE IN A MOVIE.
How can you not love the dead. The music is just full of love
so beautiful and meaningful sung so soulfully... truly feeling it today
i was at this show !!!! one of the best at alpine by the dead. this was a very moving closer. it was quite the nght after this show.
mighty fine song....mighty fine thoughts too.
@Dashandfriends this is a wake song from the bahamas that goes back many years before the dead. they learned their version from a recording of joseph spence. also i miss brent :( everything after brent was trash imho.
I was here and it was amazing...I'll never forget this show...Monday night Closer...
Loved Alpine Valley and those were hot shows... spent the end of the show sliding down the hill a few times lol
I miss you Jerry and Brent.
God bless Jerry!!!

Wow! I love this tune & This is 1 of the finest versions I've found on here! Thanks for sharing, @Kuipo42!
@looselucy115 my dad always sang it to me when i was like five and now i only get to see him like 6 times a year : ( but i still love this song and listen to it every time i go to bed

______
Ahhh,Makes me proud to be one of Jerry's kids :)
I've known this from the Live Dead album since the 1970s, and it was good. But this version is so much more. Really sweet.
I love you JER , but Jesus loves you the best
And we bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
Rest in peace my honey!
Amen...............!
@ccdeweese iduuno man... people really love Jerry, like a lot
I forgot what a great show that was. I was 4th row Jerry. 145 shows and Alpine was always the best (Deer Creek close 2nd).
note for the 3 people who "disliked it". DON"T WATCH THINGS THAT YOU WON"T LIKE AND MAKE IT EASIER FOR EVERYONE!!!
OR, they'd break into a KICKIN' "Mighty Quinn" that was it, u went for that ride, and didn't care where it took u
Alpine and Deer creek are great...If your not in Philly !! I'm partial to Saratoga but that's my home town...
and then Billy and Mickey got on their drums and dummed the crowd out the door. what a show this was!
In my opinion, I like the fillmore west song 1969. It is much slower, and really puts you to sleep.
'B' for the beast at the ending of the wood , he eat all the children that would not be good ...
@wtube502 not trash but not as good, Pigpen was a huge part of what got me into the dead.
my friend was at htis concert and sid they hadnt played this song for at least 10 years
Wow! Jerry best guitar player AND singer ever!
Myland looked a little coked out...
BIG UPS TO 242 BAHAMAS and one of the greatest Bahamian guitarists Joseph Spence (Original Artist)
Maybe the speed is the same, but the tone is different. Both are great though.
well ccedeweese....you are more than likely correct.....but I will try any way
One of the best all time period!!!....
i post this almost every night, on FB when i log off for the night.
Not true, ccdeweese. I don't love Jesus at all, but I do love Jerry.
Does anyone know if this is from a video one can find or purchase?
@looselucy115
My hippie friends call this phenomenon "Phamily."

@musicshake Same here!!! Loved the whole show! Did you see him with Band of Joy?
The Dixie Hummingbirds also do a lovely version of this song.
i first discovered incredible string band than the dead, and when i heard this for the first time a giant smile was drawed on my face. two of my favorite bands, so far themselves, had a point of connection and this song always makes me smile and happy. they did Jonny b good too that night
nobody loves Jerry as much as Jesus
how much slower would you like it?
Goodnight Brothers! I bid You...
RIP brother
They would take us out there for a few hours, then, when everyone was ready to explode they'd bring us back with this song.
Just like this :-)
Hearing this song is always so bitter sweet. Its so beautiful but alas the show is over - always a sad moment. Great video!
@looselucy115

I was there for this night as well & it was a great 3 nights, even the rain could not kill the spirit.
20 years ago but still gives me the chills. This was a great show and I'm glad I can watch this and recapture a little bit of the past! Thanks!!
Remins me of all those that have laid down their lives for freedom, righteousness and friends.
4 people dont like Jesus.
r.i.p. jerry goodnight
Just beautiful.... Jerry's singing was so soulful. And I'm not normally a gospel fan. From Mike, David's dad
goodnight everybody!
I was there too, yehu, and I just got goosebumps watching right now!!
Unforgettable! Blessed to have been present!
