Hi Jane! Great ideas with the open acrylics. I've also mixed regular fluid acrylics with open acrylic mediums, which extend the drying time, but not to the extent of using straight open paints.......
If you would still like to know "Open" is the brand name of a line of Golden paints that are manufactured to take a longer time to dry -- lots of people prefer painting with oils because they stay wet longer and that allows for them to be 'played' with -- acrylic paint has had a reputation for drying too quickly for the kind of 'play' lots of artists want to do so Golden designed these paints so people who want more 'open' time can use the convenience of acrylics instead of oil paint.
