I love both the New Boston and Goffstown Rail trails and hit them once a month unless it's below freezing. I usually skip the paved section in the middle. Downtown Goffstown has a few nice little restaurants too.
@@manchesterexplorer8519 - I wish there was a way. I park my car at different lots for each trail and drive between them not so much because it's boring for me but I don't trust drivers, so if I can skip a busy road I do. Thanks again for the history as you drive- that's why I watch your videos. That cemetery for the poor farm is always a sad place to pass.
Please never stop doing these videos brother. I moved to Manchester last year from Ohio and haven’t really felt any connection yet. I’m originally from Providence RI, born and raised. I get weirded out when people call Manchester a “City” it’s not really a city, it’s more so a medium sized town. Providence on the other hand feels like a city and got the look to match it. But, these videos are helping me see that there’s more to this place than I thought. Keep doing your magic.
39:03 trip down memory lane, i leased 19 main st and had a used tool store for 2010-2013 in the old florist shop. Goffstows was a great peaceful town. I miss that area
I like the historical pictures added to the video. Gerry is still running transfer station. I'm surprised he didn't see more walkers from the Fairgrounds to Lang station - that is a busy part of the trail for walkers.
Hey man! I ran across this video yesterday and am now subscribed. Super cool. I've lived in Manchester for about 3.5 years and can't wait to get to all your videos. I'm into the same stuff...bikes and exploration. I've done the Goffstown trail a million times but will now add the New Boston leg to it. Let me know if you'd like to get together and ride some time. btw...your video is well done and really enjoyed the narration.
In my mid -teens into my 20s I hunted and fished in New Boston. Nice to refresh my memory. Yes, Keep exploring surrounding towns. While I didn't live in Manchester I spent time there. Dated girls from there and shopped there. Like in Zayres. TH e BIG Mill building north side. Several floors. Tedd's Sport Shop on South Elm. I go way back. But come to Epsom next summer. I'd like to learn more about my town too. My backyard is part of the Blueberry Express Line. There's a story for you. Come check out the Blue Berry Express. Much of the line is still open for travel by bike I think.
@ericorff9994 New Boston is a special area , that's for sure . During the summer when everything is green it feels as if you're in a Lord of the Rings movie.
Appreciate the video. My son and his family live in Merrimack and my wife and I have been wondering about rail trails in the area. We’ll have to check out the New Boston to Manchester. By the way, I’m 68 so you’ve got a lot of riding ahead of you!!
@marklawrence4596 The trick is to not stop pedaling as yes, theres youtubers in their 80's that still pedal....it's the best sport, in my opinion. Great excersize, and it's fun . Tinkering around or building bikes is a hobby as well.
You were wondering how the various built up railbeds were constructed without heavy equipment. The railroad hauled dirt on flatcars loaded by steam shovels from cuts made further back. It was then, unloaded by a plow held with a chain at each end of it, which pushed the dirt off as the train moved forward. The line to New Boston was built to facilitate shipping farm produce to Manchester, but rail traffic was insufficient to support the line. so there was talk of perhaps continuing the line south to connect with the B&M Railroad at Fitchburg, MA, but funds failed to materialize, and the line ended uo under B&M ownership. This made the line to Fitchburg pointless as the B&M already had a connection there, The New Boston was abandoned in 1936 when the great flood of that year did irreparable damage.
Ok this is weird because i also grew up on westside until the age of 14. Then i moved to New Boston btw you biked past my dads house which is 2 houses down from the spring on rt 13 lol. Went to Goffstown high school and moved back to Manch after graduating. Then moved back to New Boston in my 40s and now Florida. Anyways im just saying i dont know how we didnt cross paths basically because i also did barn dances and know locals from the area😆 small world like they say!! P.s. you know the house it always has a big box truck that says MB Maintenance on it😊
Interesting thoughts about the dams. I hope you are right. Been pointing out the carnage on our rivers by the remaining hydro dams. 30 to 50 year old female eels headed out to sea to spawn. Chopped up by the thousands from my life views.
Do you remember the high 5 restraunt on the top 17th floor of the wall street tower on 555 canal st? I went there once back in the early 90's when it was still open. Now it's a big exorbitant penthouse. Manchester really has changed a lot.
@turbopower130 Yes, I recall the High-5. The city has changed a bit. it's going downhill at the momment as the past 30 years hasn't been very positive. Most of the multifamily, residential neighborhoods are lost due to slumlords.
I appreciate the dedication you have towards presenting our area's cool little slice of history. Did they tear down the chicken coops and buildings in that area near the cemetery?
That cafe on the river' 'Northeast cafe' just recently closed and will become ' The Cure' cafe very soon. Your buddy doesn't live in that house on the fairgrounds, I do as the caretaker of the grounds and before me a woman and her dog lived there. A lot of talk about past drinking and such which is a bit odd how many times and the manner it was mentioned in. It's the Hillsborough county youth center not sure he fairgrounds but alot of people do refer to it as such because it's best known for that.
@jamesbeard1837 Sorry , I haven't hung out in New Boston for about 12 years . Thanks for the update on the Cafe and the house that you reside in, but the man in charge of the transfer station did reside there .Also, I dont think theres anything odd about me talking about my past as I wasted a good portion of my life away due to alcohol as I'm not afraid to admit it but I respect your opinion....thanks for watching.
