The Drummer's Toolbox:
We’ve just launched the biggest, most comprehensive book of drumming styles out there - The Drummer’s Toolbox - which gives you an in-depth look at 101 different styles on the drums.
For a sneak peek of what’s inside this ultimate style guide, here are five types of drumming you’ve probably never heard before:
1. Flat tire shuffle
Also known as ‘the back shuffle’ or ‘upbeat shuffle’, you’ll accent the third note of every triplet grouping. Keep steady quarter notes on the bass drum and add a standard blues shuffle ride pattern over top. Add in the hi-hat foot on two and four.
To hear it in context, check out:
“Every Day I Have the Blues” - B.B. King
“Back at the Chicken Shack” - Jimmy Smith
2. Zouk
This style originated in early 1980s on the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. It fuses elements of calypso, biguine, and other West African music into one unique style. Most of these songs use drum machines, so when playing on a kit, we’re emulating electronic drums heard in the recordings. You’ll play a four-on-the-floor bass drum pattern, a standard Afro-Caribbean cross stick pattern (think calypso), and a syncopated 16th note hi-hat pattern.
To hear it in context, check out:

3. Afoxê
This Afro-Brazilian style is based on a style that developed out of ancient traditions of the Yoruba people of West Africa. The cymbal pattern, based on 16th notes and 8th notes, comes from a ceremonial rhythm called ijexá. It was traditionally played on agogô bells or two cowbells at different pitches. If you don’t have these, you can play the pattern on the ride cymbal between the bell and the bow. Add a cross stick with steady quarter notes - synced to the hi-hat foot - and add in the bass drum on 2+ and 4+.
4. Poinciana
This rhythm was originally played by Vernel Fournier on a 1950s arrangement of the song Poinciana. Vernel did it open-handed (left hand on a ride, right hand on the snare), turned the snares off, and used a felt mallet. You’ll play the ride with your left hand on beats 2 and 4, and have your left foot in unison. Play the bass drum on beats 1 and 3 in the first bar, and beats 1, 3, and 4 in the second bar. Add in your right hand on the snare drum and play the last quarter note on the floor tom.
To hear it in context, check out:
“March of the Sad Ones” - Gilad Hekselman
“Poinciana” - Ahmad Jamal
5. Go-go
Developed in the late ’60s/early ’70s in Washington DC, Go-go merges elements of soul, funk, and hip hop. The 16th notes on the hi-hat are swung (you can think of them as 16th note triplets). Once you get the bass and snare drum pattern, you’ll be able to figure out pretty much any Go-go groove.

0:59 Flat Tire Shuffle
3:53 Zouk
6:37 Afoxe
10:47 Poinciana
14:43 Go-Go
Grew up on all these and I'm almost 50 where I'm from not only have we heard of these grooves but we've evolved them into hybrid styles.
Especially Zouk has been out since the 70s or before hand. Great vid though
I watched this video again and then I knew them all

Modern solutions...
Flat tire is just blast beats for jazz people
This is great you guys! I love applying these less common grooves to more modern music. Thanks!
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed this one. 👍
@@DrumeoOfficial Jeff lesson on schedule?! That would be great!
Glad you dig!
Hi Jeff, I love your sound & groove!! Greetings Jost
Jost Nickel Thanks Jost!!
The Rhythm you called Zouk is known in Haiti as Kompa. It appears in most of the tradicional music of that Country. I know it because I play in a Haitian band.
Listen to:
Mozayik, Jacques Schuarz-Bart, Jowee Omicil, System band and Zenglen.
Those are Haitian bands and artists. ✌️
Kompa and Zouk are not exactly the same rythm and groove. Besides Kompa is played on a crash cymbal, and there is not the « tibwa » clave like in Zouk. But Kompa influenced a lot Zouk .
Thanks!
And it's re common rythm in reggaeton
I can pick these up and play them but I there's no way I can break them down and explain it to someone else. I just think it's so great that we have people out there who can actually break it down and explain it to others.
Man I'm still waiting for the Larnell Lewis video. Anybody knows when it's gonna be out? I missed it live.
Our live lessons usually go out about a month after they are filmed. We mix/master the audio and put on the finishing touches for youtube. Stay tuned. 🙂
Drumeo Oh god. I shouldn’t have fallen asleep. :(((
Drumeo I was wondering the same thing! Thanks for letting me know
Drumeo When will the George Spanky McCurdy video drop? I saw on his IG awhile ago he was in the studio
@@RockRabbitGaming It's up! Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/HYooD58N0Lg/v-deo.html
Flat tire shuffle is in The Beatles Old Brown Shoe
The drum sound on this video is my favorite of all the drumeo videos. Cool kit, cool snare.
i feel like i'm the only one who dislikes the snare sound in this.
It's out of tune and sounds too boxy.
Everything else sounds great
@@WhirlwindStudio not a drummer really, though I fool around on a kit once in while, primarily a guitarist for the last 20 years. But I agree, I dont enjoy the snare sound. Might and probably does sound good in a mix, but solo I don't personally care for it. It's not bad but I didn't think to myself that that's a killer snare tone.
Wow! That Flat Tire Shuffle is what Ringo plays on Old Brown Shoe!
first one is the groove from manic depression
Right
man started the video immediately going into the pornhub theme
@@EpicRetardFilmsJMS I never listen to the pornhub ads
Yup, just add the tom fills.
I was thinking Dylan "Rainy Day Women" (everybody must get stoned!)
Thank you so much for this!!! My 11year old son is learning & we really appreciate your videos.
thank you drumeo for helping me learn new stuff. since last year i have been traveling twice a year to Guadeloupe and Martinique and i had no idea of this style of music. i have discovered zouk machine and they are awesome. i think they sing in guadeloupean creole. the people of Martinique and Guadeloupe are the nicest i have ever met and i have traveled pretty much everywhere. the carnival in Martinique is incredible.
Hey thanks for sharing Erik, cheers. 🙂
Great lesson, thanks!!!
Amazing rhythms!!! Thanks!
That kit sounds so dope.
I love people that can properly execute swift touches
Live at the Pershing Lounge is the Album with Vernell's version of Poinciana with Ahmad Jamal trio. Really great recording.
This young man really worked hard on this book. Great job!
Your bass drum sound massaged my brain. It was quite pleasant.
Poinciana is a classic ahmad jamal track. For hip hop fans check out the song new hip hop by binary star in which they sample jamals song
Great achievement man! Congrats from the belly of the Americas!
The closest thing I have to a drum kit is my car steering wheel ... but I am still subscribed and loving this channel!!
He is awesome what a nice guy and what a great lesson thank you Brandon
This is awesome
Great video.. ...loved it
Great info
I may have to snag that book!
Thanks for putting gogo on the map but you forgot about the Junkyard Band...
Hopefully you’ll also bring some GoGo drummers onto drumeo.
so cool. thanks
I’m so glad I purchased the book on Amazon.Theres so much info packed into this huge book and it’s just amazing for me as drummer.Especially Metal drumming and I’m actually engaging with each genre that I learn.Thank you.
Thanks for picking up a copy! So glad you're enjoying it! :)
Kudos on the zouk drumming. Well done
Very interesting video. Thanks to you 👍
Anyone interested in GoGo should check out Paul "Buggy" Edwards. He's the master of the genre. The GoGo style goes a lot deeper than what's presented here.
Yup there's a whole lot of hi hat accents and it's slower and the bass drum is funky damn funky.
The Zouk excerpt reminds me of the song "Wilmot" by _Sabres of Paradise_
Anyone else feel #3 The Afoxe with the + of 4 as the 1?
Cool groove, definitely has some afrobeat applications.
Great.. thanks 🥁🔥🙏
Please make a video on the groove that you played at the beginning of this video
Dear lord those 30th anniversary Agops are incredible
Agop is the real deal!!
They sure are yummy ain’t they? Dark, washy, complex, easy on the eyes, and just a great ride. Hey... sounds like a girl I dated in college. Wonder what she’s up to.
Ayeeeee go go is a standard here in the DMV (DC, MD, VA). The mention was awesome. Although I gotta say, the hihat is typically slightly opened in go go.
That back shuffle beat can be heard on The Beatles “Old Brown Shoe”
Also...you play this “go-go” rhythm in DC and see what happens lol
I played it on the lunch table for a decade of my childhood. The warning is real.
You can also play zouk by playing the beat on the cymbal, choking it. It's more difficult but sounds great. BTW, Kassav is the same as the Beatles in Martinique and Guadeloupe.
Nice I've played these but didnt have a name for them
Finally a video that presents a relatively accurate account of where the mentioned rhythms Originated, ...Africa, via N.America... Which is where 99% of the🥁 rhythms used in All types of contemporary music played on the modern drum set come from⁉️💯 All the examples offered have a very distinct common denominator.
Interesting! Turns out I played the Flat tire shuffle and Zouk without realizing, lol!
Anybody in France knows about Zouk, I thought it would be the same for you brothers
Exact :)
begzog It’s also really similar to Reggaetón from Puerto Rico
and what is incredible is how he interpreted it musically
That Flat Tire needs a little sumpin’ on it... Jerry Adolphe nailed it in a previous Drumeo vid (iirc it was “Essential Shuffle Grooves”?) It has to have a loping feel, to imitate the flat tire. Jerry even throws in the middle note of the triplet as a ghost note so you REALLY feel it - boo-doo-ba-BOP-a-da. “Extra greasy, eh” as Jerry might say! Playing it too straight doesn’t work, it just becomes a kinda busy shuffle.
Now to wrap my head around applying this to my bands music. Grindcore. I actually have an idea for the Afoxê one.
Latin Jazz Grind ;)
@@damianodicerbo5706 Afro Brazilian grindcore.
There’s one you missed which I’m really good at. It’s called “Messing Up” 👍
Thank You
Cool ...... thank's !
amazing
Daniiloff - Thank you!
Zouk is what came out when i tried drumming for the first time and can't get my limbs coordinated.
Good ,Marvelous
Who ain't ever heard of GOGO??? Lol. The official music genre of Washington DC! There's also different variations of the gogo beat - the Pocket, the Socket, and my personal favorite, the Bounce Beat 💯
No one from outside the DMV knows Go Go. Even a lot of the new people living here don’t know it. I heard a drummer by Metro Center the other day playing good Go Go beat, and a couple of people were standing around asking “what the hell is he doing?”
@@binkymagnus Lol I guess they couldn't handle the funk! We'll know when people catch on to Gogo, when Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift start putting out Gogo singles xD
Gogo I didn't know that was an actual thing I just thaught I was doing it as a freestyle
Thank you for the great video!
One thing I have to say is that “back at the chicken shack” is being played very differently than what you play here, the “and”s are being played on the HH and a snare only on 2.
It sound totally different than the bb king song you mentioned, which has an almost straight eight feeling to it and a fast tempo.
You're correct! There are a few different ways to play that groove, and my hope was that drummers would go listen to those recordings and hear some variations of the groove! :)
If you guys don't mind, let me suggest an Afoxé/Ijexá song - Andar com Fé from Gilberto Gil. Fits well with the pattern suggested. More traditionally then I suggest see videos from Filhos de Gandhy (there are videos from the Carnival time in Brazil with them) - that's their traditional rhythm. You can also check this brazilian drummer Tito Oliveira. Cheers!
Hi Brandon, excelente lesson... Could you teach us Mission Impossible in 5/4, from the original series? Thanks!
You should mention the great drummers of gogo music like , ricky wellman , juju house and so on, also you should get Thomas Bellon the drummer for Kassav on drumeo , to play zouk and kompa and show you how its really played.
Add a double on the left hand from the first exp.and voila...Manic Depression by Mitch Mitchell.
#1 aka Three Legged Dog or Shoes In The Dryer. Those are a couple of slang terms for a backwards shuffle that may be called out on the bandstand by the music director/band leader. Most commonly found in retro blues numbers.
Zouk is used in Future Sound by David Garibaldi
What is the name of the first style, the one you started the video with? It sounds like a particular pocket groove style.
Seems my music listening habits have fortunately enlightened me
Try searching for a drummer called Riquelme. He plays Forró, another style you probably never heard.
The first style is basically the entire Flogging Molly's 'Swagger' album
Zouk is pretty popular in east and central africa.
What is the Make or Brand of your Drums I don't recognize this make they sound great
Ijexa is one of afro braziliam style. That's it. Great. Drumeo. congratulations!
what size is that bass drum? it's so small and still sounds massive!!
Elio Banzer - 18”x14”!
Hi ! Just to ask, do you know when The Drummer's Toolbox will be available for sale in printed format in Europe (I'm from France, and the shipping fees are two times more expensive than the book !) ?
Also, great video, as always !
CoeurCaban - Hey! Right now it’s only available on Drumeo (free shipping if you order it in a bundle) and Amazon. It’s also available on Kindle and iBooks if you’re looking for a digital version!
uhmm....isnt GO-GO the equivalent of Smoke on the Water on guitar or am i missing something?
Smoke on the water is on guitar?
Everything here is fundamental, simple building blocks.
No, although you are correct in terms of how it usually sounds hearing novices try to play them, the actual difficulty of the underlying parts is significantly different. When you hear intermediates play each of them you can see this clearly. There are very few good demonstrations of Go Go that feel good on UA-cam.
Go-go has to swing more than that, and there are a lot of flourishes that go into the groove, particularly with an accompanying congo / half-congo drummer.
Thanks...good jop...
You can hear zouk on Phish's "Bouncing Around the Room"
The flat tyre shuffle - isn't that played on The Kinks - All Of My Friends Were There?
Howdy! the "ijexa" is pronounced with a sibilant "zhuh" sound for the "j." It sounds like "EE-zhuh-Shah," at least according to the Cariocas I have met. (Also, TRILHOS URBANOS by Caetano Veloso would be a good song to check out (mind you there's no drum set on it) Thanks. Also, check out Joey "Coco" Diaz talking about Afoxe cults from Cuba. Wacky and interesting!
Where did the swung 16ths on the hat go while demonstrating the go go style? Only to show the "feel" in the beginning? I would like to have heard that all together. If my kit wasn't in storage I'd be tinkerin' that right now!
could you tell me the model name of the crash cymbal on the left, sounds amazing
xabier puerta - Istanbul Agop 21” Turk Jazz Ride
That's the tastiest cross stick sound I heard in years
Zouk - Bouncing around the room by Phish?
yes!
Second one sounds exactly like Mozambique just with cross stick and on the hi hat instead of the ride
first one is some real cyriak stuff
I've heard at least 3 of these styles; especially Poinciana and Go-Go.
Anyone whose listened to late '80s/early '90s R&B had heard some Go-Go incorporated into certain songs. Of course those in DC are surrounded by the subgenre.
First one is a greasy Texas shuffle a la SRV's Pride and joy
Very cool! Saved this video to my lessons list.👍
TD12KX - Awesome!
You can find #2 in Michael Jackson's "They don't really care about us"
Good stuffs! It should be easy for those of you who really like drumming
Will the book be available in Argentina?
Francisco Paviglianiti - Yes! It’s available on Drumeo.com :)
Flat-tire shuffle is very similar to Cruel Swing by Jawbox
Amazing! You should have a drum off with Carter from dave matthews!
i'have never heaard ZOUK & GO-GO .... unbelievable
Once you've really delved into Gogo check out Rare Essence and the groove actually gets fairly slow but the bass drum pattern explodes where you almost play a full swung triplet before beat 2 and then la lee on the bass b4 beat 4 on the snare.
God so interessant 🙏🏾 can you Tell us the name of the kit, sounds 🔝😜👍🏾
IMHO the "Poinciana" pattern is a variation of the New Orleans "Big Four".
Bouncin Round the Room by Phish has that Zouk beat
Thank you oh almigthy algorithm for showing me this amazing video.
Every drum video on UA-cam begins with drummer on the same groove.
Greatings! The 3rd is not afoxé, is Ijexá. Afoxé is the name of the group (or party) that plays Ijexá.
