Happy 4th of July everyone! Hope you all had a safe and relaxing holiday with your friends or family! Development started about 10 years ago when they started the Architecture of Luxury platform. A new platform is very expensive and is amortized over a number of years and vehicles. But Rolls Royce only sells 6,000 vehicles a year, so each has to carry some portion of the platform cost. Also while they use the i7 powertrain, they also have to adapt it to their goals. For example, they attenuate the acceleration from rest for occupant comfort which BMW doesn't do. They also do a lot of sound testing with respect to noise levels and frequency of the noise they allow to enter the cabin. iDrive had to be re-skinned. And they also order expensive components like the metal switch gear, leather, and wood paneling in small quantities which doesn't allow for bulk discounts. All of that leads to an expensive final product for the consumer. The i7 is probably 80% of the car for 20% of the cost. But that last 20% of the car is meaningul for RR buyers and the extra 80% cost is not.
I didn't think it was the replacement for the Wraith. I thought it was the Phantom coupe it was replacing. I think there are going to be more models coming, including the small suv Rolls.
