This felt like a very satisfying ending to see Phos fade into nothingness, fully content. It feels like the most satisfying way to end every single character by praying them away to nothingness and the Earth being destroyed like the impurities of humanity had its run wisping about on Earth and influencing the characters and it had to say goodbye. May the new life thrive in a new pure land! A very satisfying ending of a manga I must say. Ichikawa did such a great job! I’ve no idea how she managed to pull off great elements of the story for so long, how to keep the manga’s unique charm of glistering and shimmering vibes of a world we were introduced to.

after all the betrayal and heartbreak, i don’t think there’s a better way for phos to have gone out than by someone finally, finally trying to save them. before the rocks and brother, every single person phos ever knew betrayed and abandoned them. the weight of that… but in the end, phos got to go out knowing there were those that really cared for them, who were willing to risk themselves among the molten magma to save them. i really don’t think it could have happened a better way. rest in peace, phos.
GOODDDD I still can't get over this chapter. The fact that each phase is dedicated to a page and a desire is so nice to see, and I wish Phos saw the land that he helped bring them to. But it's nice to see he's finally at peace and content... And seeing him smile again after so long is extremely nice to see.
It is so weird that such an impactful series is just ending right now. I have so many questions about so many characters and to know that they'll never get their answers is a weird feeling. I am looking forward to next month!!

Ive got into HnK relatively late (last year) so im not really as shook by the nearing end as many others who followed its progression for many years, but i can confidently say it had great influence on me. Yeah this ongoing struggle is tough and pretty taxing I wonder what sort of experience some who has never heard of Ichikawa’s raffle for the PS5 will think of the story removed from that context in the future.
I'm sad and happy about the ending, showing everything that Phos' has been thru and felt to then leave Happy. This Story definitely changed me a little and i reeeally like it. And Oh yeah the art is Amazing with a unique style that feels super light on the eyes and mind.

This is prob my fav chp. in the entire series. It's like it put together everythin the series has been in 1 fell swoop & added the last touch to complete it. Obv can't speak for her but considerin I don't beleive she once bout the series or characters directly only mentionin mainly stuff like food or games She must've been the moat gleeful person there lol. Phos goin into nothingness is somethin that strongly resonates personally & I hope she really was satisfied in the end. She really did it.
Hahaha yeah Ichikawa really puts the most heart wrenching stuff and then her author comments are random but I think that dichotomy is the whole point of it all. Be happy no matter what life throws at you!

Phos was kinda like a dog you get put down you've grown up with them your whole life but you don't want them to suffer anymore so you give them a simple death rather than a long one
this was always a buddhist journey, so for happiness to be attained from nothingness -- and truly from finally ceasing to exist after millenia -- is very apt. the desire and striving for longer life, or continued life, nay, everlasting life, is a very weird concept for anyone practising this way of life
Mhm probably why Ichikawa made these gems immortal as a concept since it’s something that most humans are afraid of death. That wish being represented in this light shows that even with endless time won’t make life happy unless the individual does something about it in the moment.
I made a post on the HnK reddit too, but I liked the discussions/retrospectives going in the comments here so I wanted to kinda give my thoughts if that was alright! So I was first introduced to the anime before reading the manga, and I discovered right when Phos had begun their attack on the Earth Gems. And… YEAH. I won’t lie, it really really really took me by surprise when I saw the story go down that direction. It honestly took me a few rereads to really grasp that the story even went that direction, it just was entirely unexpected when going into it from the anime. Before I continue on, the statements I am going to make are not a critique on the story-I think that everything was written brilliantly, and the symbolism and foreshadowing that was done in this series is honestly some of the best in manga period. This is solely my personal purely emotional response to the story, and maybe also trying to understanding it by posting about it here and seeing what others think. I can’t help but feel…conflicted? Artistically, critically, and analytically, I fully can acknowledge and accept that this series was just absolutely flawless-hardly any cracks in sight. But yet, something in the back of my brain always worms its way through whenever I read the latest chapter or think on the series. I…for a lack of any words…did anyone when the moon arc start feel…? I don’t know how to word it other than feel disappointed in the direction the story went. I’m not even sure if disappointed is even the right word. I suppose the main thing that eats me up constantly is that I almost wish the series went on longer with its “status quo” before entering the moon arc. Even then, I’m not even sure if that’s what is bothering me. All I know is that despite how much I completely see how incredible this story is, for whatever reason I also feel incredibly disappointed in that direction. Did I want to see more? Did I feel that I didn’t get to know the gems enough? Did I feel I didn’t get to know PHOS well enough before their transformation? I genuinely have no idea, and it’s honestly kinda driving me crazy because I SO BADLY want to know what the hell is my personal gripe with how the story went and will inevitably end. I really want to know if I’m the only one that felt this way, that’s partly why I’m making this post here now. I shall take your pitchforks and torches now.
There are definitely times were I felt all of these things that you were feeling. The series really picks up a completely different direction after Phos' fixation on the Lunarians which ends up becoming the main focus as the anime comes to a conclusion. This might be why that is more jarring as the Director didn't really want to go into that avenue heavily when only 12 episodes were greenlit. To put it into context, by the time the anime was airing we were getting into chapter 47-51ish where the story was putting Phos up to the Moon, which is another pretty pivotal moment in the series. I honestly would've liked more of the status quo in the latter parts of the series as we didn't really get enough time to breathe during the 10,000 years or what not as I think there was plenty of time for those small moment early on building up our cast of lustrous. Granted Ichikawa puts a lot of this information in the artbooks that are released with the limited edition fo the volumes so although it's not part of the main story, those character dynamics and other lore that you crave can be found there.
I think finding true happiness correlates with being able to detach yourself from your worldly desires as well as your past and future. not that I'm able to do that all the time, but more often than not I just live in the here and now with nothing so important that it could stop me from enjoying the now. tbf the way I am is a little unfair. not experiencing any form of attraction makes it way easier for me to not get attached in the first place.
Yeah and that’s completely fine. That is what Buddhism preaches to be able to dissociate because this world is full of suffering and pain. It might seem really taxing from an observer looking in but that’s the beauty of it. Happiness shouldn’t require excessive effort.
What a story, I can't wait to see it all come to the end that it deserves. Ichikawa crafted a beautiful narrative that is so different from anything i've seen.

Phos deserved so much, it was so heart breaking watching them get jaded and manipulated because she wanted to be helpful and to know the truth
