It's comforting to see that after Tractor Mike gets too old to do this, I can still learn stuff from Tractor Reagan.

Just sayin, Mike is a patient and very thorough teacher so that made it easier for her to learn how to drive it. Too bad not everyone gets that level of instruction.

I also have 3 daughters, all grown and on their own. Not a single one of them inherited my love for tractors, mowing or other machinery. Good on Reagan for being willing to learn and congratulations on her degree.

I had doubts when she yawned and checked her watch during the intro, but maybe she had heard these Dad stories a few times too many growing up. Good job.

If I were to answer the, "what is the biggest difference between a an HST and gear tractor" - would be that with an HST, if you let go of the pedals, you stop. If you do that on a gear, you keep going. - Excellent training methods. 👏

    • @enbrewer

And the opposite! I went from a gear tractor to a HST and, when nearing a wire fence, hit the clutch! Needless to say, I didn't stop and instead took out the fence.

@enbrewer Yup, EVERY one is a learning curve. In my 50+ years of tractors, I have only had, straight up 4 speed Geared (many with no syncro) - Well this spring I bought a 12/12 Power Shuttle - Exactly what I've always wanted, but 4 speeds, and 3 ranges, a clutch, and a power reverser, it has taken a few minutes to become proficient. But I love it. Best of both worlds. Forward/reverse like an HST, but constant gear for field work.

Nice job teaching, Mike. As a former educator, I can say it is important to let the student learn "on the job" rather than you showing how it is done.. Learning time is shorter, and learning is better! Nice job, Reagan! Cheers!

That was almost the perfect tractor to learn on, only that Massey shift pattern kept it from being absolutely perfect!! Watching Reagan reminded me of my daughter, at the time that she learned manual transmission shifting, I never dreamed that it would lead to her getting a CDL and driving Semi, or Sport bikes, or now Harley's!!!! They really can do it if they put their mind to it!!

Great video Mike. I taught both my daughters how to drive a stick shift. It's special when they want to learn what dad does. I learned to drive a stick shift on a '55 Buick with the starter button under the gas pedal. I've never forgotten the time when I stalled it on a hill and wished I had 3 feet!

Congrats to the recent graduate! With your attitude you should go far. I learned to drive a '63 VW bug, and, yes, they are much easier. I love my Kubota gear-drive MX4700, though.

So to teach the new stick driver apply the parking break first, then the new driver won't roll away when they push in the clutch during a moment of panic. 😀 Good video thanks

Well done to Reagan - and Mike you're a patient teacher! It always amazes me how our cousins in the US are so mistified by the concept of driving stick! Oh well....

A gear drive tractor is “a real tractor”. I and my old Ford 1920 like that statement!

I learned to drive stick in a 1978 Chevy truck. It had the tightest clutch that I've ever had the misfortune of using. I guess it was because of the little straight six motor. Three on the tree and ease off that tight clutch. Once I had driven it a few times it wasn't too bad unless I was taking off going uphill.

My poor Dad got to teach me AND my brother to drive- standard- at the same time.
Numerous grey hairs resulted im sure!
I already knew how to drive a tractor, we had a Farmall A, and an automatic sedan around the property.

I still have two manual transmission cars and a tractor. I'm only 40 but the people under 30 don't know how to drive them. It's an experience. Where at I'm Missouri are you located? I live in Jefferson county and we have a place in Wayne county north of Piedmont.

I have an L 2501. I live on a hilly property. I find myself riding the brake pedal a lot while the tractor is pulling. Think I may be wearing the brakes out.

My transmission is a high and low and has 4 low and 4 high. It has a shift on the left which is a low high and reverse selector. Don’t think I can shift while moving not sure. It is the L 2501.

I had a Ford 3000 with a manual transmission but it had to be in a gear you wanted. I was selling the tractor and the first guy came to drive it and I told him you cannot shift it on a roll. So what does he do going down the road he tries shifting gears and he grinds the gears. So i yell at him and it's like who cares, well I do. The next guy i tell him and he understands and he ends up buying it. So he buys the tractor and the rear blade and I had a cultivar, well he loads up everything on this little trailer. The tongue is almost touching the ground, so I mention to him leave some of it here and come back and get the rest of it. No he doesn't do that! I thought good luck with you. His chains were dragging the ground. Not good!

I was driving a Fergie 20 at 8 years old. clutch and pedal brakes . Got my road vehicle license 12 days after my 15 birthday in NZ. these new tractors have me baffled. they have cabs, aircon, sat navs and steer by themselves. The skill of driving by the sea of your pants has gone into obscurity. A big mistake in my mind
