  • BRITISH RAILWAYS IN THE 1980's
    MARCH STATION on 10/07/1987
Continuing with my archive of video recording between the years of 1986 to 2001 This clip is of March in Cambridgeshire, taken on 10/07/1987. I hope the video takes you back to this period with fond memories. Feel free to comment, good or bad, all comments are read and greatly appreciated, but it is not always possible to answer each individually. Sit back and enjoy this latest production remembering all those now long gone Locomotive classes and other types of traction. Many thanks for all subscriptions and all of those viewers who have kindly shown an interest in my material.

Brilliant stuff. This was 11 years after my Dad left the railway (fireman and second man at March) and a year after we moved from March to Peterborough. Loved going round the depot and yard with him. Any more from March?

I use to love a cdr to MR and get the platform 5 books and covers to in different colours, then a slow walk to MR and get the board from the helpful foreman and then go out and view all the stuff. Such a friendly depot.

When you see the tractive effort (as well as think about the logistics effort) of using a Class 31 to haul 7 cars then you can so see why Class 158s etc. etc. became so attractive to the railways even then.
Amazing footage though, March is a lovely station I have to say these days.
PS. 11:26 - wonder where all those Ford Sierra's are now?!

The Norwich to Brummie came about from the loss of freight and parcel business from the rail strikes of 1972. The railway suddenly had a lot of unused locomotives. Why don't the railway unions and their members ever learn
