The real video, which you're not seeing much of here, was banned in America and pretty much killed their career over there. It was because they dressed in drag, but the video was inspired by, and a tribute to, the legendary English soap opera, Coronation Street. Hope you see the proper video sometime, Joel - it's a real hoot. And you won't ever see Roger Taylor - the drummer - in quite the same light again!
PS - Brian May, the guitarist, is to be knighted in the New Year. Sir Brian May - how about that?!

This is the video that caused a lot of American radio & video channels to turn against Queen. Apparently, middle America didn’t get the coronation street joke and just didn’t like them being in drag. It’s a shame so many people are quick to judge without knowing what they’re actually judging. Thanks for the reaction Joel, brilliant. Hope you, your family and friends have a great New Year’s Eve and much love for a successful 2023 from the UK 🇬🇧 🤩

The “weird” part of the video (full official video is well worth watching!) was based on the ballet of “L’apres-midi d’un faun” by Debussy, I believe as interpreted by Nijinsky in a famous performance.

    • @gaza1881
      @gaza1881 Рік тому +1

I believe Nijinsky actually performed the premier performance. "Famous" is probably not apt, infamous would be a better description, ending in a 'riot' in the theatre. Wikipedia says "Faune, considered one of the first modern ballets, caused controversy because of its sexually suggestive final scene". The story goes that at the end of the performance Diaghilev rebuked Nijinsky 'what were you thinking, you have just masturbated in front of all of Paris's elite?' to which Nijinsky replied 'It was not me, it was the faune.'

      Hi Martyn,
Jim was my best friend for almost twenty years and I miss him every single day.
I remember wonderful nights out at Club 180 (formerly the Copa) in Earl’s Court, propping up the bar in the corner at Freddie’s favourite spot, then the Bouncers letting us escape via the side exit near the end of the night just like Freddie would - it used to make me chuckle that he’d either have Terry with him or waiting outside to speed him home in the car - a mere 2 minutes walk away! And why not? 🥰 Rock stars don’t do stairs, so why bother walking? 😋 It wouldn’t surprise me if Jim introduced you and I at some point I’m sure.
I remember phoning Jim the night before he died - and although he was unable to speak, one of his Sisters kindly held the phone to his ear so I could tell him the loving words I needed to say.
Since 2010, January has remained an extremely difficult month to navigate for me - I’ve not marked (let alone celebrated) new year’s for over 12 years now as 3 weeks later my Father would die from lung cancer too. Our families were very close. A few years later I’d lose my Sister in between those dates to add to the emotional and mental stress.
Phoebe and I remain in regular touch and I like to think we lean-in on each other when needed. Just like close friendships, *Chosen Family* is a blessing.
While I am truly grateful for the many years I had with him, it still doesn’t negate how desperately I still miss Jim
Love to you and yours Martyn.

Just thought I would let you know that Brian May has just been announced as receiving a Knighthood in the New Year's Honours List, for his work regarding music and wildlife, so he is now SIR BRIAN MAY.

The video that killed their career in the US, though not in the rest of the World. America's 'sensibilities' (prejudices) were offended, lol. They rebuilt their US fanbase after Live Aid though.

Great reaction! This was one of the many tunes that separated Queen from the rest. If you want to check something even more surprising, take a look at the Millionaire Waltz. It's a brilliant mix between ballroom waltz and hard rock, with a sprinkle of Marlene Dietrich in the mix. Happy New Year!!

Freddie was once engaged to a lovely lady called Mary Austen (he actually left his house and a lot of his wealth to her in his Will) but told her he was bisexual in the 1970s although he NEVER publicly 'came out' as preferring men. This song (written by bassist John Deacon who by this time was working with other bands as well as Queen and also wanted to be better known for his songwriting and not just a bass player so was probably writing about his own frustrations) is now seen as Freddie's unspoken reveal to the world about his sexuality (although it was drummer Roger Taylor who suggested they dressed in drag as a parody of the UK's longest soap opera Coronation Street). The latter half of the video version was performed with the Royal Ballet in reference to a musical composition by Debussy and a choreography by Nijinsky for the Russian Ballet about a young faun (half-human and half-goat Greek mythological creature) first awareness of sexuality. The original ballet was slammed by audience and critics - and this video received similar reactions in Middle America: although elsewhere it was well received, became a hit, and is now largely regarded as an anthem of the fight against oppression.

Joel, I`m in my 70`s now, but went to concerts back in the 1970`s, you should watch Pink floyds `PULSE', and Genesis `live in Rome' for a HUGE audience, brilliant concert with amazing lighting.

watch Highlander and listen to the album "Its a kind of magic" (queen did this sound track for the film) you may or may not have listened to at least 1 or 2 of these songs but there are some crackers and they fit in the film wondefully. after that watch Flash (AAAA aaaaaa) ((sorry can never help myself ☺)) as that too has a Queen sound track of some classic bangers these are a MUST for Queen fans (and excellent introductions for those that are not 😉)

You can’t beat Queen, at our Pantomime wrap up parties we always played this and all stood in a row miming either air guitar or sweeping up (the beginning of the video) walked across the room, turned and went back the other way, repeating until the end. I have spent probably twenty years doing that.
