I've been missing our chats about one of my favorite gaming series - Dark Souls. Ranking the Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring bosses is always a blast - today I'd like to narrow the microscope on the Souls Series boss movesets, specifically highlighting the worst boss attacks. I'll include bossses such as Malenia from Elden Ring, Bed of Chaos from Dark Souls, and Guardian Ape from Sekiro.

Absoultely not. This is worse than RSL.
Take away Malenia’s lifesteal and she’d be one of my top 5 ER bosses instantly. Still think the final boss is harder though.
I would absolutely buy that
Ironically enough, i believe Godskinned Nobel is worse, at least, and this is with extensive training to actually record a lets play for Elden Ring, Water Fowl is just a case of everyone using darksouls instict of dodge away, instead of dodging through it.
Its dodge through once, turn dodge through again, repeat a third time with a second roll to evade the burst... Her grab though is stupid
Are you going to play the Elden Ring DLC @Democracy?
Was honestly surprised Micolash’s A Call Beyond wasn’t mentioned. Was easily the bane of my existence in Bloodborne
All you need to do is clap, walk forward and to the left, and tell Miko what a good little boy he is.
I was wondering if this would make the list. Despised it. Mainly because I know I completely suck at dodging it. Ive seen others do it. But it wrecks me every single time.
Also, i'm surprised ludwig's charge attack that can oneshot you if you are not at like 35HP stat and being full health and the ebrietas charge as well, idk how to Dodge that one to this day, i though they would share the spot with oceiros ( though oceiros is the worst contender, is literally insta charge attack, if we count other soulslikes, then fuoco is also a big ofender with this type of attacks )
Micolash is bed of chaos tier
@@asdfghjkllkjhgfdsa8725Other that his Call Beyond, he's always felt mostly annoying to me. Luckily, his second phase can still be cheesed easily with poison knives. Though I never like excusing a boss because it can be cheesed.
I’ll never understand why they decided the single longest multi-hit move in the game should go on the character who already heals for every hit she lands. Then again, if your health is always zero after getting hit by it, I suppose it doesn’t matter how much health she gets back, does it?
I think Melania was the one boss where they made her hard for being hard’s sake. She is still just about fair but she definitely feels deliberately buffed to be way harder than every other boss.
After understanding Malenia more with time, the heal on hit is seriously the least of your worries with her. It's psychological warfare at best. Her grab heals her more than waterfowl, and the lunging thrusts also heal a lot, so it's not like that's the problem move with heal on hit. You were probably doomed anyway if she heals that much, tbh
The way that posture damage immunity that waterfowl has when it's coming off a lunging thrust stitches that immunity to the recovery of the thrust, punishing you without you even realizing it when you go in to hit her after said thrust. It's pretty obnoxious lmao
it isnt always zero, you can still dodge out of it, so you dont get hit by all of them. just takes a lot of training.
The heal on hit is negligible. Makes the fight last slightly longer. @@user-pn4px5lr8w
That's what happens when you design a boss for an entirely different game. People memed about her being a Sekiro boss in a souls game, and she literally was. She was a scrapped Lady Tomoe boss for Sekiro repackaged for Elden Ring
I feel like DeModcracy made this top 10 as an excuse just to rant about the waterfowl dance one more time😂.
Edit: I don't blame him, I also think it's bullshit.
it's still valid criticism at least. in a way he was kind of a pioneer for elden ring criticism before others
@tyhjyys8883 Oh, don't get me wrong, I definitely don't blame him. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed that segment of the video very much.
Thats why I'm watching the video 😂. Im still butt-hurt
@@austin0_bandit05 Same bro🙏
Oh definitely😂 too be fair tho it’s a stupid move in an otherwise incredible fight
Yeah, we all knew Waterfowl Dance would be #1. But one thing worth noting about Waterfowl Dance that I didn't see mentioned; her ability to Waterfowl out of stagger. Sure, there's reasonable ways to avoid Waterfowl... but when she springs up into the air just as a heavy R2 or a jump attack lands often leaves you without enough time to mount a proper evasion when you're locked into the attack animation and she's already in the air.
The fact that the close range evasion strat for Waterfowl has no precedent also speaks for itself. Circling around her while she's in the air only to dodge in the opposite direction at the very last second is an absurd ask that the average player isn't likely to figure out without looking it up.
That is one of the reasons why she is the worst designed humanoid boss by From Software.
As somebody with loads of experience she can’t actually do this. She can start it up a fraction of a second before your attack lands and then hyper armour through it. You have to be sure you can hit her before she does anything or she will often just kill you doing this.
It's been mentioned multiple times in the comment section already, but there's a better, easier way to dodge Waterfowl Dance. When Malenia starts up WD, you run away and jump right as the first flurry is about to reach you, then roll through the second and third flurry as usual. This method is easy to execute and works very consistently as long as you don't overcommit.
@@carlschrappen9712this is by far tye best method but if you're too close or if you are in the middle of an attack animation, you don't have time to run away from the first dash. That's why the close range strat was found but it is ridiculousoy difficult to pull off without proper training
@@carlschrappen9712 Gotcha, it only works if you don't attack her with anything heavier than your bare fists. I'll keep that in mind.
The worst part about Waterfowl Dance is that even if you dodge it perfectly and go in to punish, she just dodges away, disregarding your skill
Thats more of a 50/50 chance
There are bosses in no from games with similar moves and nobody complains.
@@danieladamczyk4024 Which ones? No FromSoftware bosses before Elden Ring had such absurdly long attack combos with input reading. Maybe a few bosses from DS3's DLCs come close but it's still nothing compared to all the properties of Waterfowl Dance.
@@kaschey6145 First real boss of Kena Bridge of spirits have similar one.
You’re either dodging away from her too many times before trying to punish, or you’re just walking up to her after she finishes the last flurry. She has about 2-3 seconds of endlag from Waterfowl, enough time for a heavy R2 or a quick spell cast to punish. And if you’re still just not able to figure out how to move fast enough for that, just use Night Comet, she won’t dodge it.
After days stuck on Malenia, I respec'd my character around Mogh's spear's weapon art, which can kill her in less time than it takes for her to wind up a waterfowl. I wondered if I had maybe cheated myself out of a satisfying victory until I realised that the thrill of gitting gud was nothing compared to the hilarity of imagining Malenia slamming down her controller going "UGH it's not fair, I would totally have her if it wasn't for that one bullshit move she does"
I will keep than in mind whenever I cheese a boss from now on. That's a glorious mental image.
Don't worry about it anyway. Taking her down with more "balanced" equipment is not satisfying anyway. She's one of the cheesiest bosses in the series alongside Bed of chaos and Ancient dragon so taking her down the hard way isn't worth it. It just feels like you wasted your time
The skill issue is real
@@falcoon_f_zero9450how would you know that ? 😂
@@saucesriracha3763 Cause I did every major boss in the first playthrough solo using pretty regular halberds by just learning their moves. And beating Malenia left me with the same feeling as beating Bed of Chaos or something. "thank god, that's over. There was nothing fun about that"
A good boss doesn't leave a feeling like that. Not worth doing it honourably. Be as cheesy as the boss and bombrush her with all the most op weapons and summons. The fight's still going to be unsatisfying but at least you didn't waste your time.
Ocieros’s charge attack better be on here, it is evil. I tried a soul lvl 1 and he was horrible
Edit: I am vindicated
I could never beat him on sl1 because of this attack. Appears out of nowhere and one-shots you no matter what.
@@zigsynx5364there is armor and ring combos to prevent oneshots. Additionally you can block. If you dont want to block you can preroll after punishes. Dont want to do that? Just stay behind him. Hell you can kill him before he even gets a chance to charge with a +8 DSA. There are lots of ways to deal with the move.
@@BBQcheese agreed, idk what they were smoking when they gave him 0 windup frames but I want some
The super slidr of doom
@@zhortey He’s a rushed boss generally. That’s apparent in his boring and erratic moveset.
He’s the bed of chaos of DS3. At least ancient wyvern and tree are bad in a inoffensive way.
However, Oceirus is just frustrating.
Oceiros’s charge would probably be my number 1. That attack has basically no telegraph.
Probably why I just prefer to get him stuck on the roots each time now…
An honorable mention imo should be God Devouring Serpent's move where it slams the ground and causes a massive cone attack. The damage varies wildly, the dodge window always feels wonky, and it can make a pretty easy boss feel like a slot machine.
I genuinly always bring a shield when facing rykard because of this attack, it can straight up one shot you even if you have 40 vigor and dodging it is almost impossible.
I actually did a pure magic run recently and that attack was leaving me melding. I finally figured out the way to avoid it is just staying near him, since he won't do it if you're close to him
Raptor of the mists was essential for my LVL 1 kill. He one shot me otherwise
That's because you're not meant to dodge through it, just run sideways to evade it.
I don't understand how you guys have such a hard time with Rykard, he's beyond the easiest boss even without his gimmick weapon, I didn't even use it the first time around because I thought since it was a base weapon no upgrades it was a nerf to my +10 weapon.
What makes me especially mad about Waterfoul is that it could easily be fixed by simply making the first flurry work like the second and third, where you can simply roll through it without taking any damage if you do it right. It would still be a scary attack that can easily one shot you if you're not careful, but at least now a regular player can learn to dodge it without having to look up a tutorial on youtube that requires some speedrun level series of inputs to pull off.
I've also seen some ideas where the Waterfowl animation is changed to where instead of Malenia jumping straight up, catching you off guard 90% of the time, have her do a backstep a good distance away, THEN jump and start the Waterfowl.
This way, it's still a dangerous attack, but that backstep gives you a couple more nanoseconds to react properly
@@boshwa20 And also some extra distance to get away. That'd be fine, yeah
@@boshwa20and for getting even more distance/avoid more damage in the first flurry, jumping is better than dodging
The first one is the whole move, the second 2 are a formality.
You dont have to look up a guide for waterfowl. You can learn how to dodge it through play alone.
If you cant dodge it then block it.
I learned how to dodge it on my first playthrough without looking anything up. You can’t try the same thing over and over again and expect different results.
Imo one of the biggest bs attacks of Elden Ring is Rykard's ground lift
Like, the attack is actually so difficult to dodge, that if Rykard wasn't such an easy fight people would absolutely be flipping off about that attack more.
Which move is this again? Can you be more specific?
@@JMoore-vo7ii The one where the snake digs it's head on the ground and then it explodes.
@@cutcutado word, fuck that shit
Just run left or right of the attack
Waterfowl dance: sweating profusely
Sir Alonne deserves at least an honorable mention here. The fact his thrust attack makes his entire body become a hitbox and forces the player into the animation if he gets hit is just delightful agony.
I can't count the amount of times I rolled slightly off tempo to his left (and yes I'm aware the attack is easier to dodge on the right since he doesn't put his left body parts forward), got scratched by his shoulder and teleported through convoluted space into his blade.
It also doesn't help that this absolute jank of an attack is also a damage buff for the boss if it lands.
Yeah was hoping to see this one and surprised it's not on the list!
Attacks I don’t like are ones that are delayed or are independent of whatever the boss is doing, which can sometimes hit you outside of your view or causing you to roll INTO it while your dealing with the main target
I hate margit so much because this shit, it was a terrible first impression of elden ring because that piece of shit
I'm pretty decent at dodging Waterfowl Dance now, but I won't pretend I still don't hear "I am Milenia, Blade of Miquella" in my nightmares
Thank you for calling out Oceiros here. When I say I can’t stand this boss people don’t get what I’m talking about but your footage perfectly encapsulates the problem. Most of the moveset is fine, even good, but the charge is just unbelievably big and stupid. At least Malenia gives you a chance to reconsider your life choices before waterfowl hits, Oceiros just splatters you like a Halo warthog going zero to mach one in a physically unreactable amount of time
Didn't realize how BS that charge was until my SL1 run.
Had to give up on fighting him naked and put on best armor I could and sheild to just not randomly die all the time xD
What bothers me the most is that Waterfawl Dance is unpunishable. Even if you manage to survive you can't hit Malenia safely after that
You can if you roll into it.
@@JohnDoe-kn7ex Not reliable neither
She'll dodge away, it's a mechanic they gave a few bosses in this game, the black knife assassin's and Radagon are notorious for this and let's not talk about the Elden Beast. This enemy AI in this game are already pretty bad and inconsistent (you can literally just run circles around them sometimes or they one shot you with their strongest move from the start others) but couple the AI with warerfowl and regen on hit, and you have a really terribly balanced boss that people trick themselves into claiming is near perfect. You can enjoy her fight but she feels like a secret boss meant for ng+ 5
@@tomasmv8072 its completely consistent, just requires correct timing.
@@tomasmv8072 you can hit her with a ranged attack while she's still attacking.
That Guardian Ape grab is far from being ridiculously difficult to evade, all you need to do is sprint backwards and jump.
The swipe grab is pretty easy once you recognize it, but the jump grab is entirely bs.
I’d say his doodoo throws tracking is far worse
The worst for me is when Mergo's Wet Nurse makes the arena go dark and clones herself. It's not hard to avoid (once you know the trick is just to sprint around the arena), but it goes on SO DAMN LONG and the fact that you can't counter it and are stuck just running around like a putz for the 15 seconds it lasts is extremely annoying.
I find it funny that the Godskin Noble also has a really shitty attack being the like 8 frame startup attack of his noble presence belly bump lmao
It’s genuinely incredible how Waterfowl Dance takes Malenia from being an S tier boss to a B/C tier boss
It is S-tier, if S stands for Sadism.
It's so sad man because she has an absolutely fantastic kit that's super rewarding to learn. But they just HAD to make waterfowl a ridiculous move. I don't think there's a single other example in any other boss kit where I've had to look up how to dodge a move just to have a CHANCE of surviving it. If I was keeping track of what moves I've died to, I'm willing to bet that 80% of them were to waterfowl. Such a shame that they overtuned that one move
that and the lifesteal, give her more life sure, but that shit was unfair
She sucks even if you take that away from her, waterfowl is just the one move that exposes her terrible design. Easily the worst humanoid boss.
@@botondkunos1774 Idk man, as much as I HATE her for waterfowl, the rest of her kit makes for such an exhilarating fight that would've been absolutely amazing without such an overpowered move. But ofc to each their own! There's completely legitimate reasons to hate her outside of waterfowl.
The godskin noble roll is actually pretty easy to avoid if you see it coming first. Just hold right and sprint slightly diagonally, then play ring around the rosey. The sudden rolls are just a bug
You got an example of this? Would love to see how it works. Issue with the move for me is how glitchy it is - sometimes it skips frames and all sorts.
I appreciate that you still acknowledge how great the rest of Malenia’s moveset is besides Waterfowl Dance. She easily has one of the most complex and fluid movesets of any boss in the Souls Series (up there with Isshin the Sword Saint in my opinion). The back and forth chess match of trying to stagger her and learning which of her attacks can or can’t be interrupted/punished is truly exhilarating. It is a shame that insanely busted abilities like Waterfowl Dance, the Scarlet Clone attack, and her healing ability put off so many first time players from taking the time to learn her fight.
From my experience there are consistent ways you can dodge Waterfowl Dance and the Scarlet clone attack but I agree that they are not intuitive to perform and there aren’t many ways to learn how to dodge them blind without lots of trial and error or looking up a guide. She is still one of my favourite bosses in the series but I can understand why a lot of people find her too frustrating to learn.
I don’t know if people will agree with me, but I think Maliketh’s moveset in phase 2 is up there as one of the best as well.
@@QDY358-nn1qj I agree and I don’t think Maliketh is nearly as hard as a lot of people say he is either. I fought him on a solo strength build and was able to beat him quite quickly.
@@jameslough6329 He’s pretty difficult for me. I think he is a bit build dependent tho as I’d imagine that strength builds destroy his already pretty low health pool.
Waterfowl is great to. Get good.
@@asdfghjkllkjhgfdsa8725 I don’t think he was saying that waterfowl was bad, he was just acknowledging the fact that thedemodcracy didn’t apply his hatred for waterfowl to the fight as a whole.
never felt like malenia was hard for good reasons
the healing mechanic is cool, but healing from hitting blocked hits is weird, and having 1 gimmick move that can delete you doesn't really mean the fight is difficult
Worst part is that albinauric pots, the pot thats main gimmick is stopping heals, doesnt work for her
That's where it goes from
Challenging
To
Bullsh*t
Agreed. Vampiric hits can be cool for bosses, but i feel they should only be on well avoidable attacks, otherwise the boss fight becomes super tedious.
Or a cool twist would be like the more they heal, the less damage they deal, or the slower they get or something.
Malenia is supposed to be the ultimate superboss of all Fromsoft games, so I think the healing on hits is valid, as it demands perfecting her instead of blocking.
That said, as someone who has basically memorized all of her attacks at this point, the first wave of waterfowl still feels incredibly inconsistent. I know what triggers it, I know when she can/can't use it, but if she decides to use it when you're up-close, it's awful
@@Gatchu137 the issue is also she heals on blocked hits, coupled with waterfowl. It even extends to collision with an entity, so she can waterfowl a phantom/summon during their death animation to gain about 30% of her hp back on waterfowl.
Waterfowl just interacts poorly with her main gimmick. I'm a fan of malenia outside of that move and the shadow clone bullshit.
loved the list, im a tad surprised you didnt mention dancer of the boreal valley's pre-nerf grab, that would reach across time space and invincibility frames to grab you, practically turning her hand into a black hole. otherwise in the charge attack section gravetender wolf should be in there it gets caught on the pillars in the arena and then effectively blinks on top of you for full damage.
“Pre-nerf” speaks for itself. Not worth talking about
also its telegraphed enough that you just walk away, doesn't really require a dodge roll. It does suck though. There are very few fromsoft command grabs that don't feel cheap.
@@twoshu8940 I mean sure, but it would be fun to mention in a list like this as some fun trivia relating to the topic.
I think most people forget about the Wolf's attack simply because it's a very easy and forgettable boss fight in general. Even when it happens, this boss has so little HP, it doesn't take much to rush them down.
Oh my god, I knew I recognized those deaths to Oceiros, I see it in your sources, it's from my video! Thanks for including it, it really illustrates how bs that insta charge is, makes SL1 runs awful. Great video btw!
Waterfowl is so fun to dodge when you get it tho. Every time I fight Melania and perfectly dodge it it’s a huge dopamine boost.
Facts dude I like dodging it a lot too.
Dude you described EXACTLY how I felt the first time I fought Malenia, the exact experience I had put to words.
I eventually just gave up trying to dodge it and got a barricade shield to tank it.
Bloodhound Step and Vow of the Indomitable are good alternatives, if you don't want her to heal.
As someone who didn't give up, and can now dodge it pretty well, I'll tell you that it's honestly not an attack worth learning/respecting.
@@Gatchu137 Yeah one of my friends went with Bloodhound step. Was really interesting to see people figure out different ways to deal with it when the game was new.
@srburp to be honest I used mimic tear and ran bleed build with scimitars or would use rivers as it's ash orlf war would stun reliably but I'd get quite lucky woth bleed procs canceling waterfowl
Agree with the top one malenia is such a fun and engaging fight without that move but then a good run just ends with that one attack. Sometimes I can dodge with bloodhound step but other times it just gets me every time
Ok, be honest: who else knew right away that Waterfowl Dance was a shoo-in for the number one spot?
To be fair, Malenia was in the thumbnail
The funny thing is, I didn’t find any attacks to be straight up bad or unfair *other* than Waterfowl Dance.
I'd say on this list, the godskin noble roll was just badly designed. I get they wanted to make ornstein and smough the sequel, but have the attack last for so long and be able to hit multiple times was just dumb. By the time you recover from the first hits, there's a good chance you're in a corner with him already rolling on top of you.
Just a badly designed move.
@@mattm7798yea they really should've just made it like a straight line dash attack and maybe have him do it a couple times in a row
@@JohnDavis-zv6ygor put it in a much more reasonable arena
I am missing God Devouring Serpent's floor attack on this list.
It's not that bad
I’d just like to say that these last few months have been a delight, you’re the reason I got into dark souls and I love that you’ve been posting so much. I really hope to see more amazing content from you in the future and it’s really cool to see you talk about the souls games again, as well as watch you do all these new boss rankings.
One thing about the ancient dragon; you don’t need to run for the tail. Just run the complete opposite direction and you’ll be fine more consistently. It’s still an annoying and terrible attack, but you don’t need to keep micro adjusting to the tail using this technique.
As for an attack I despise, I’m surprised you never brought up Lawrence shitting his lava everywhere. For a unique phase 2, everything about it is awful and not fun to fight. I finally get behind him and manage to get some space for an attack, only to immediately have to scramble away because of his lava spillage. It’s a “get off me” attack, but it’s the worst one for me becuase in addition to being very damaging, it also stays on the ground for far too long, so if you’re not careful (or just plain unlucky) you will have multiple puddles to have to dodge around, all the while this screaming fire beast is still flailing at you. Unforgivable
This is how you dodge waterfowl
1 Run away when she is going to do the first part and jump when she is closing in
2 Roll towards her to dodge the second part
3 Run to the left or right to lure the direction of the last part and then run in the opposite direction
The first part is the only hard one here
Everyone knows how to dodge waterfowl dance now. It is basically common knowledge. This would have been helpful mid 2022.
Can you do a guide on how to touch grass?
All of that is risky and pointless to do. Even if you have a 95% chance of success you can still screw up 5% of the time and take damage. The best thing to do is simply throw daggers from far away once she's at 75% health to bait out the attack, then actually fight her for awhile. Bait it out again after about another 30 seconds. Boring, and dumb, and precisely the reason it's bad design.
@@I-ONLY-BUILD-MECHS-AND-DUSTERS it is not risky at all. The reason you see it as risky is the fact that most people fight malenia more aggressively than other bosses because of her low poise. With the right balance of aggression and passiveness, you can see the instant she flies for the WFD and begin running away. No need for you to play in such a boring way. Handle her like any other boss, don't attack until you are convinced it is right and back off after attacking for a while.
1 Run away when she is going to do the first part
2 Get caught because she chose to do it when you were in melee range
3 Die
Demod needed to vent after the Godskin Noble rolled him like cookie dough. All jokes aside, thanks for the souls upload, a perfect Christmas gift

It's not that bad
yes it is, its littrally undodgeable. the only way the no-hit runners found to avoid damage is to interupt the beast via stagger@@debater452
I'm actually genuinely shocked Ornsteins charge is on here. Its certainly janky, but without that attack there simply wouldnt be a safe way to get them split up enough for you to attack Ornstein safely. My entire SL1 no pyromancy no shields playthrough relied on that specific attack.
also surprised by that entry, it's the best window for hitting ornstein
Well the problem isn't the concept of the attack but the excecution. Obviously Ornstein should have a charge attack, it's just that his particular charge attack is very janky in an unfair way.
I don't particularly think it belongs on the list, because even the jank charges ARE fairly avoidable due to his speed, even if they feel cheaty. I think he had it here mostly because it's just quite, iconic I guess? Infamous maybe?
@@jacobnorris8256tbh my main issue with that attack is that the draw distance for the charge animation is really fucking weird
I will see him initiate a charge on the other side if the room, 2 seconds later he stops and starts walking then he suddenly teleports several meters twoards me still charging
Honestly, Waterfowl should be like Moon Presence AoE, stupidly discustingly op and unfair, but at least the recovery is crazy long to compensate, instead she starts to murder you 0,01sec after finishing her attack
DeModcracy sir, where that random Castle Sol knight, the guy who was playing DMC while we were in Eden Ring
4 kings purple wave that follows you to infinity better be on here
A couple of attacks I'd want to mention from each game that I've played.
DS1: Gwyn's "Fast Slash" and the Capra Demon's two-handed horizontal slash. Gwyn's "Fast Slash" is really annoying and feels like a precursor to some of Fromsoft's later boss design of them having a super fast move that they can bust out after the end of combos or just randomly in the middle of a fight. On Gwyn himself it isn't too bad since he's generally a pushover, but I feel it's noteworthy since it's sort of the first of it's kind. Capra Demon's two-handed slash is similarly not too bad on it's own, but it has DS2 levels of awkward tracking in it right before the swing. When you fight the enemy Capra Demons in the Demon Ruins it's a lot easier to get a feel for this move's awkward tracking, but in the boss fight? Haha, no. You're not gonna get the feel for that move until he's killed you with it several times thanks to the dogs and cramped space.
DS2: Everyone's mentioned Sir Alonne's piercing grab. I'm gonna mention Sir Alonne's piercing grab. The video *should* have mentioned Sir Alonne's piercing grab. Making jokes about Sir Alonne's piercing grab is like making jokes about Marth's grab in Smash Bros Melee. It's just one of those universal gags that Dark Souls fans loves to make. And just like Marth's infamous grab, it's easy to forget just how busted the move's hitbox is until you're reminded of it in-person.
DS3: Champion Gundyr's left hook is a really awesome attack in concept and I love that one of the most aggressive bosses in Dark Souls period is totally willing to just take a swing at you, but he also *loves* to pepper it into the middle of combos and lunges which can get really annoying. It isn't so much that it's a particularly hard move to dodge, it's just that he can use it so often and he attacks so frequently that if you get caught lacking in any way he's going to clip you on the chin. I would have more issues with this move if it guaranteed the follow-up kick but it doesn't so as it is I settle for calling it charmingly stupid. There's also High Lord Wolnir's "stank" in that it's incredibly vague where the hitboxes for it around his body actually are and that if his RNG is particularly shitty he'll leave you with no opportunities to attack his arms and flood the screen with it.
Oh, one last honorable mention are the Demon Prince's Fire Orbs. You know, that shit that makes you hate going through the Demon Ruins in Smoldering Lake? How about that sprinkled into a boss fight with an incredibly aggressive, meteor chucking psycho demon? Yuck.
Bloodborne: I've never been ok with the giant snake summons of the Shadows of Yharnam. I otherwise love this boss fight but on the rare occasion I accidentally kill one of them too fast, having to deal with this move all fight is just a real big pace-breaker.
Gwyn's fast slash is definitely not just a "precusor to later boss design". Even in all of Fromsoft's games, moves as fast or faster than the fast slash are EXTREMELY rare. The series certainly has more faster attacks as you go on, but the fast slash is WAY beyond even that. It's to a point where it's literally physically unreactable for many people - as far as I could calculate the animation from the absolute subtlest hand movement until you get hit is straight up 0.38 seconds. Which including input lag (amplified by fromsoft's god awful "dodge on release" controls), is absolutely within a level where I imagine several some players literally cannot react to it no matter how much they train.
Very rarely are attacks ever this fast in fromsoft games, this isn't some sort of later game design philosophy, it's just Gwyn being a rushed and fairly badly designed fight.
@@jacobnorris8256 I didn't want to accidentally oversell how broken the Fast Slash appears to be because I myself am not very confident in how true this is. I appreciate this elaboration though because honestly I would rather low-ball something than oversell it. Plus I'm still validated by my choice to have it on a list like this.
Admittedly when I think of moves like Gwyn's Fast Slash I can only vaguely point at Elden Ring in this regard, but I also wasn't too sure if I had forgotten anything in DS3 or Bloodborne that might have slipped my mind. But you're probably right. Gwyn's Fast Slash is uniquely fucked up in pure speed and I get the feeling it only flies under the radar because of how easy he is as a boss in general.
Wow I just watched some of your old videos and then you upload an amazing new video!
I love your other videos too, but hearing about you diving back into Souls makes me very excited!
My personal number one is Sir Alonne's thrust/grab attack. I will never forget blatantly dodging out of the way just to watch my character scoot back to be skewered as though I stood there and let it happen.
Edit: Should've known I'd draw the ire of DS2 apologists; generic rebuttals and all.
Should have leveled ADP more smh my head
Youre messing up his shiny floors.
That's Dark Souls II grabs being dogshit, not this attack in particular
That's an animation, skill and adp issue not an issue with the hitbox. Ds2 grabs just look weird when you get caught in your roll.
The animation looks weird but Sir Alonne's grab hitboxes actually work perfectly. This ones a skill issue or maybe an ADP issue.
The only real required to fix Waterfowl dance is the time it takes to spool up. If she starts at close range, you're pretty much a goner. So, a longer charge to allow a feasible retreat would be enough. If that's too much though, just decrease the damage of each independent hit so that it can fully one shot you at close range and is more forgiving in general.
or use light roll - problem solved.

Another lovely DeMod list to enjoy my afternoon. Love it
There's a lot of attacks that are way worse designed than some of the ones on this list. For example rykard has an aoe in phase 1 which is completely and utterly undodgeable, jumping, rolling and even blocking doesn't work
I feel 80% of these sucky attacks could be pulled from Elden Ring if he didn't add the other games for variety
Manus from DS1 has two that are incredibly similar, they're literally the same animation, but on one of them, his hand goes up and he attacks immediately. But sometimes that hand goes up and you start to spam dodge, but then he ridiculously WAITS and then attacks. That was horrible for me.
What’s crazy is, Waterfowl isn’t even Malenia’s worst move imo. The clone move in her Goddess of Rot phase is just some bs
the yellow indicator on the ad is very appreciated
aldriches arrow rain are easily #1 for me. the way he spam them and how much stamina you need in your build to not take damage is crazy. especially when he can mix in other attacks in the second phase. maybe not the most difficult to evade but the worst and most unfair attack for me. hate fighting that dude on repeat playthrough
I'm surprised kalameets head swipe wasn't on this list. It has such an unintuitive dodge and the hitbox jank is enough to make the BoC look like a masterpiece of boss design
That goose neck gives me nightmares. It’s so fun how you perfectly time your roll but the collision box pushes you along until your s expire and you still get hit

Midir's laser would be #2 for me. I can get behind the rest of the fight, but that laser is almost a deciding factor of if I will win or lose that fight. It's so hard to predict where exactly it will go. And if it hits you and your health isn't absolutely insane, it's almost always a one-shot.
It's scary, but it follows the same pattern every time.
Waterfowl isnt worse than godskin roll. Waterfowl is hard to dodge, sure, but IS dodgeable, and can be endured with Vow of the indominable or a shield if you’re completely hopeless. Rollout is buggy and arena dependent to avoid, the roll timing is too short for a normal person and the constantly active hitbox means it can sometimes just instakill you.
Nice video as always, cheers
I went on a Demodcracy binge and right as it was about to end he released a new vid. W channel
To me the waterfowl dance feels completely out of place in ER. It's like they wanted to add a parry system similar to Sekiro and for whatever reason scraped it and called it a day. With parry mods on PC Malenia is kind of a joke!
sucks cus melania might be my favourite boss in the series if only waterfowl didn't exist
Malenia's Waterfowl Dance is a Sekiro move in a Souls game. Yeah eventually I learned to dodge it but the absence of the deflection mechanic made it atrocious.
TIL that my Netflix subscription gets me access to games, thanks for the heads up!
And great list and video, as always.
I'm of the firm belief that Malenia's healing is a non-issue (and Malenia has more larger issues), as it becomes more and more irrelevant the more skilled you become at fighting her. Waterflow dance would be a fine attack if it wasn't for the fact you can't through the first flurry. You can roll through the rest of the flurries, but probably the most important part of the attack can't be. It forces you to play a certain way to basically run away after every attack or two just so you don't get caught out by the first flurry. It's really frustrating if you don't have freezing pots on you and makes you fear an attack that has a long windup due to the distance she can cover. Unless you pre-run, you're not escaping that attack.
You can i frame the first attack.
The main issue is that it still heals on block.
For most players, this is a non-issue, but it makes her abnormally punishing to shield builds
@@aprinnyonbreak1290 Just don’t block ALL her attacks. Most of the attacks she does outside a small few doesn’t even give her that much. You can block her, you’re just not allowed to wait while doing nothing to get free damage on the Super boss. Also even if you’re saying it’s unfair for that, so? Oh boho one play style is a little hard. That doesn’t make it BS. By that logic anything that you can’t bleed, has his magic/holy resist or frost is BS as well. Brother it’s an RPG, not every build will thrive 100% through the game.
@@simonealcazar816
The problem is build requirements.
A boss being immune to bleed is a relatively small deal, because there's other stuff you can do off the same build. Other statuses you can roll with, or other things you can do off of the same stat spread.
Building to use shields requires a relatively specific stat spread that doesn't really translate well to much else.
There are relatively few hard playstyle shut downs throughout Soulsborne, and most of them are looked at sourly.
Because it is rarely World of Strength builds that face this, often nobody cares, but the loudest screeching is usually when it is enemies that are just immune/abnormally resistant to physical damage. There's not many of those, but the few that exist are among the most hated enemies in the series.
How would the reception of the ultimate challenge boss be if they were just immune to weapon damage? Nope, sorry, your Strength/Dex build is just unusable here, you must be a caster to participate in this fight. Boohoo, you can't expect one playstyle to work through every part of the game, pick up a staff or buy enough firebombs every attempt.
How would that go over?
The only reason Milanea gets a semblance of a pass is because weirdos hate shields.
@@aprinnyonbreak1290 First of all. I said you can fight with a shield, you can’t expect to play the patience game of the wait and poke. YOU just don’t want adjust the way how you use the shield. That’s the point. I bring up those stats because they lower your overall damage for status effects. Entities immune or highly resistant makes you significantly LESS DAMAGE. For example Rennala has 70% magic resistance, making pretty much 80% spells tickle her. Does that make unfair? No. You just have to adjust what you’re doing.
It’s one thing if you just couldn’t block at all, Godfrey Phase two is 70% grab attacks and shockwave you can’t guard. Is he BS? No. She doesn’t stop you from shielding. Heck you can block on her most dangerous moves. What you can’t do is just mindless block and expect to just win. Not for her. That’s the challenge, risk and reward, I know that’s alien for you shield users. I’m sorry she ask you adjust how to use your shield and pushes out of your comfort zone. That’s not bad game design. Sorry.
Not a great example for comparing Melee and shields. Shield is an alternative source of defense not a main mechanic. Attacking an enemy with physical damage is the main source because 80% of the games source of dmg is physical damage. That’s not invalidating a playstyle that’s just LITERALLY MAKING THE UNPLAYABLE.
Imo worst boss attack (and worst boss too) has to be gideon's triple rings of light.
It is extremely hard to dodge, and he can just spam it multiple times leaving you with no way to avoid the damage at all
Gideon's strongest attack is his mouth. It last so long even after you beat him, it keeps going.
Bro you can like one shot Gideon in so many ways its not even funny. I'm still honestly baffled as to how people die to him in all of my playthroughs even my blind first one he was dead b4 he ended his speech.

Great list. Surprised input reading didn't get its own category
Personally, waterfowl isn't my #1. There are consistent, doable responses to it, whereas rollout is just complete buggy BS where the only response is to cheese the environment.
Knowing your past with the Twin Princes, I'm very surprised Lorian's teleport isn't on here.
For me, I would've added Midir's laser. That thing was the end of so many otherwise good runs.
Maybe unpopular opinion, but Lorian's teleport isn't hard at all. It's really just visual. It's still an attack, just roll as if it was a normal swing of his sword and you'll be fine. In fact the lock on stays during his teleport if he's just moving around you. If he teleports above you though it lets go, in which case you know to react to that now.
While waterfowl is rough, I wouldn’t put it at #1. For me, stuff like Oceiros charge and Godskin Noble roll are way worse because they just feel unfair. Maybe it was because I played elden ring a bit late and incorporated some online advice into my build (high vigor etc) but while waterfowl caused me some trouble, it never felt like a run ended on malenia. Dodging all of it is hard sure, but you can dodge like 80% of it pretty consistently, even from point blank range with a decent amount of precision. Compared to something like oceiros yolo charge with 0 startup frames, it just doesn’t feel nearly as frustrating.
So nobody is going to talk about ebrietas charge attack the boss took me over 300 attempts on bl4 just because of that attack it litteraly took more attempts than orphan of kos and Laurence
Hearing Tales of Berseria and Catherine music in a DeMod video makes my heart so happy.
Malenia slash attack number 1 for sure
I'm surprised Elden Beast made it through this video scot-free. I thought SURELY Elden Stars would be #2 after Waterfowl Dance!
It was heavily nerfed it's not that bad
Probably falls into the "get off me" attacks.
The las 4 bosses of this game legitimately ruin it for me. They're so bad. The player character is so slow and clunky for what they did with those bosses.
@@MrMetalhorse What are you talking about. The final bosses are most Amaizing
My personal problem with Melania boils down to 1 phrase: "Kitchen sink"
She has so much going for her it's kinda crazy. High damage (60 vigor with the roly-poly armor and I'm still being 3 to 5 shot depending on the attacks), high speed, a gimmick (lifesteal), giant AOE (phase 2 blossom but tbf, this is fairly easy to dodge and a good opportunity to punish), a status effect, delayed combos, and a very difficult to avoid attack that utilizes all of the previous stated mechanics that is very likely to kill you and is guarantied to happen at least once in the fight. She even has traces of a mob boss in her kit.
Now, it's true that all the bosses have some of these things, but no other boss has ALL of these things. Honestly, I'd like her a hell of a lot more if they either remover her healing or made waterfowl more avoidable. Not necessarily by increasing the dodge window, but maybe make it interruptible with a well timed parry or powerful attack, which would truly feel like you've out-skilled her imo. Just some way to fight back instead of the seeming "dodge, die, or luck out" feel it currently has. (worth noting, this is the first I've seen the ice pot thing, gonna try that from now on so this last bit may be moot)
One thing about waterfowl dance that made the fight easier for me is respecting it as a “revenge” move. She will use it at 70%, and then she’ll use it again on a “cooldown”, but only if you go to town on her low poise. If I’m not hyper-aggressive I’m always ready for it, as the worst part of dealing with it is the first barrage; the others can be easily avoided.
I won’t say it makes for a more interesting fight immediately, but the mind game behind it can be quite fun. I don’t mind it as a completely optional, extremely hidden endgame superboss that doesn’t even gatekeep anything besides a weapon, a spell, a weak version of Bloodborne rally that requires a precious consumable to activate and an item to cancel an ending. It’s meant to be this occult ultimate challenge for the ones who want it.
I died to Malenia almost 250 times during my first playthrough (tried to do summonless, but caved when I got her to basically dead and then lost). That said, I still can't hate her attacks. The swordsman boss fights have always been my favorite, feeling like a dance almost when you get the moves down. Helped a dozen or so others clear their kill before going NG+ I was so into the fight even.
id recommend to use light roll, been banging my head against the wall with my usual medium roll build and as soon as i switched to light roll everything became so much easier. You can just spam dodge back to avoid waterfowl even from close distance, her quick triple slice attack doesnt clip you anymore on last hit if you dodge back as well, just everything is easier that way.
Cringe. Get a few hobbies kid.
@@jarlwhiterun7478 lmao what's actually cringe is your comment 😂

There's only 2 reasons I don't mind Waterfowl Dance anymore: #1 I learned it's EXACT trigger conditions (start using ranged attacks when she's at 2/3 HP and you can consistently bait it out at long range, after which there's a soft timer that you can kind of get the feeling for before she uses it again). And #2 I always bring a brass shield to that fight so that if I screw up I have 100% physical block and at the very least won't take any damage from it.
“You couldn’t live with your own failure, and where did that bring you, back to me.”
-waterfowl dance to demodcracy
Even though I can NOW dodge waterfowl, I cant deny it's a move that was overdeveloped.
All they needed to do was have her hang in the air for half a second longer and that would have been all the difference.
The split second timing is way too tight considering from software likes to use a buffer/delay based input style.
You can out range waterfowl dance's first flurry by sprinting and jumping away rather than sprinting and rolling. The jump consistently carries you out of range if you time it right, even if you're right next to her when she starts it.
Its still just an unintuitive attack though, and even when you can consistently avoid it I dont think it adds much to the fight. Its not that fun to dodge compared to something like her clone move.
"It's not that fun to dodge compared to something like her clone move."? In what way is the attack that mostly isn't even on your screen more fun to deal with than Waterfowl dance?
Some people have said that's due to the move being a leftover from sekiro. Not sure how true that is but I feel it would fit the deflection system well
Dodging every clone one by one is insanely satisfying. If you try to roll spam you fail, but the game has been trying to teach you that multiple times already @@trutyatces8699

IDK weirdly enough it only took me like 12 attempts to understand waterfowl dance (didn't use the close range rotation method only figured that one out on my secound platthrough by goofing around), but she does it at certain points of health mostly 2 sometimes 3 times on first phase depending on how much dps you can output and she really changes movement and aggression when she wants to do it, and as far as dodging the actaul move I just idk figured it out by trial an error a couple of times.
Miyazaki actually apologized for the bed of chaos in a radio interview in japan. Said they had little to no time to finish the boss fight and had to settled for the bed of chaos we know. He apologized cause he agreed with the criticism that the boss was truly unfair cause the player’s skill and level has no effect on how the fight will go.
I know it feels random to defend elana, let alone the 10th choice, but I feel her summons were designed to be tackled in seperate way. Killing the skeletons isn't hard because of there low hp, if you try to attack elana while there out they get in the way, but if you kill them in the one or two hits it takes, you can wail on one of the slowest and easiest bosses until her next summon. if she summons velstadt, its pretty easy to lock off and just dodge around both of their attacks since they both have slow wind ups, then solely hit her till she dies. U should treat velstadt more like a closer version of the pilgrim butterflies, something attacking you but not something you should be mainly focusing on. also stick close to her most of the fight. It disables most of her moveset and triggers her slower moves.
I felt exactly the same. In this fight, velstadt is an obstacle, not a target. It's like calling the Looking Glass Knight a bad boss because you keep aiming for his shield.
Plus when she summons the skeletons, just keep one of them alive. It won't stop her from summoning again, but it does delay the time before she can do so again. So puts the odds in your favor to a boss that is otherwise barely a boss if not for those summons. Summing Val is like the only thing that makes her hard :p
Even though he's my favorite FS boss, I was fully expecting to see Ludwig's "jump" to be included. Even when I do everything right and/or the same as all other times it seems its a 50/50 to survive no matter what. Drives me crazy.
all you have to do is run in a straight line and you'll avoid the jump 100% of the time
@cynicalgold9992 this is not true, sometimes when you run he'll land a little in front which makes running not viable 100% of the time
idk I just learned the time when he jumps down and when to roll so it only took me like 3 attempts to consistently dodge it
Turn the camera so that you are facing your character and start walking in the direction of the stairs so you have an ample "runway" while walking. You will see blood drops falling from the ceiling tracking your movements. Once they stop, roll in the direction of the stairs, no running required
For me the attacks i hate the most are the rage/berserk and delayed/wind up attacks from bosses. Like rage/berserk from Manus Father of the Abyss or Laurence, the First Vicar's crawling stomps in phase 2. I don't know why but when facing them i forget how many attacks they do when they do that or timing duration. Especially if they combo into stuff like that. As for wind ups it depends on the delay but some bosses have very deceptive wind ups that even now i still get hit by them. It's mostly those 2 kind of attacks in any souls or souls like game that screw me up the most.
Sir Alonnes thrust attack that powers him up is horrendous. The dodge timing is so weird and if you get hit once the fights pretty much over.
Fun fact: The Malenia which we all fight in Elden Ring today is ALREADY the nerfed variant. In patch 1.0, she was a LOT worse:

I love the velstadt summon. I think it's still a very balanced and fun addition to the fight, I usually just leave him alone and keep focus on Elana. It's nowhere near as bad as other ganks with no breathing room.
Have we fought the same boss? There’s a reason why people quit when skeletons aren’t summoned.
Velstadt does not compliment Elana at all in terms of balance and just forces you to either focus on him or dance around him. It’s not like he’s weak either, he comes packed with a ton of hp that it may as well be him.
Might be wrong on this one, but I’m fairly certain he can be summoned twice
@@Clarity_Control Elana can summon him as many time as her ai feels like, very funny
@@Clarity_ControlI think Velstadt is redeemed in one aspect and that is he's not very aggressive. Elana has slow attack intervals as well, so its very rare for the two of them to actually be swinging their strongest attacks at the same time.
I do still have issues with him though. It's really stupid that Velstadt has his full moveset which means he can end up buffing himself and flooding the screen with *more* projectiles, but I find if you avoid him it's a better idea than taking him on. Even if Elana's slow attack speed makes that a very enticing idea.
The worst attack a boss can have is the one who inflicted emotional Damage after the fight is won. for example defeating quelaag just to find out she was only protecting her innocent blind sister. The game was made 2011 and I still didn't recover from that hit.

It's really amazing because The Demon Princes just nailed duo fights as perfect as possible. Then you get the questionable ER boss designs.
I recall my first Malenia attempts. Took me a while, but I learned her entire kit to the point where I could consistently fight her without getting hit.
All the way until Waterfowl Dance.
All of my attempts I would spend trying to dodge that attack, and sometimes I'd be successful in dodging some of the hits and surviving. But, the health she regained meant that she'd do it again and far less telegraphed than when she'd first do it (she would always do it around half health in my time playing, made it easy to full sprint away from her and roll through the second and last sections), and that would spell the end of me. I learned her kit with each fight, but with each attempt to learn her hardest attack sending me straight back to the grace, my motivation to defeat her spiraled straight to the pits.
I'm glad I beat her at least once, because I never want to do it again, even knowing that I can stun her out of it with a Freezing pot (which only seemed to work a single time in my time fighting her? Dunno if it was a bug or not). In the end, fuck Waterfowl Dance.
Waterfowl is the biggest offender because there really isn't an intuitive way to deal with it that feels natural
The waterfowl dance would be a pretty normal attack in a KH or DMC game but becomes a ball busting unfair attack on the souls style of combat is a pretty funny thing
I dont mind waterfowl in phase one because you do get a 6th sense when you fight her enough and you just sort of know when she going to do it. You can then bait it from range and dodge it pretty easily and it will always be a while before she does it again. In phase 2 though it just feels like she will do it randomly and it rujns the whole fight.
It has a cooldown in both phases unless youre using projectiles
No it doesn't, she can use waterfowl back to back you can look up footage of this happening to people in VODs
Also her wings make the second phase waterfowl even more of a visual mess than the first phase one. It easy to lose sight of what she's even doing
Cool list. I always felt that the four kings grab attack was kinda BS, especially on SL1.
