We found it easier to start with a packaged battle deck (they are pretty cheap compared to other options) and add cards either from our collection or buy individual cards to modify the decks. Having a strong base to start with is important, especially for players who are new.
This is such a good video. Educational, an unboxing and then a practical exercise! This is a great video for us just joining the hobby and wanting to actually play the cards!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! The deck building aspect definitely didn't go the way I hoped it would, but it's been fun exploring deck options with limited cards!
Just started today and im honestly super excited!! Edit: forgot to say, thanks so much for the video, played TCGs before but i treat every game as a new experience so this is a godsend
I for sure agree that getting an etb is the way to go when it comes to starting to play the actual game. Plus you’ll never know what you are going to pull from the packs.
Fun video! I got into pokemon mostly to play. And my helpful tip for anyone starting is to buy bulk from other collectors. They even have a lot of rares in theres too
I started buy packs recently for nostalgias sake, looking for Scyther. I got him and now I want to give the tcg a try. It’s a bit overwhelming, but there’s a charm to what you did and I started sorting the packs I have purchased (14, not including a few Japanese packs) and now I’m thinking about getting a trainer box just to round it out. Thanks for this video!
Starting out is the hardest part man. Keep on building up your collection, and look online for some basic decks. The Pokemon TCG live app is also a great space to learn rules, build decks, and practice against different opponents!
A very helpful video for those who already knows the basic rules for a match (which are easy to find online on the Pokémon TCG website)! Eager to see the updated version you talked about in the comments 🙂 (Love that Bruins poster! Im an habs fan, but being an hockey fan is a win in my book anyway 😉)
There was a time where I'd mock a Habs fan, but they're a likeable team with a seemingly bright future. It's always fun finding a hockey fan in the Pokemon space!
@ thats fair, the rivalry between the Habs and the Bruins is legendary! At least we can agree to the hate the Leafs together. Also, Bergeron is one of my favorite hockey player, such a class act! I checked out your other content, instant sub my guy! Keep it up :)
I'm not sure what you mean by series. If you're referring to each set (like Paldea Evolved or Obsidian Flames) then yes, you can absolutely build decks using cards from various sets! If you mean different generations of cards, (scarlet and violet, sword and shield, sun and moon) then it varies. If you wanted to participate in official tournaments, you can only use cards in the current format (f, g, h) which you can only find in the most recent generations of cards. Hope this helps!
Just went to my first pokemon event at my local shop! Surging sparks prerelease was a lot of fun! Coming from yugioh it is a lot different but I’m enjoying learning this new tcg
I'm jealous! I won't be making it to a pre release for the new set. I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh since I was a kid, but from what I remember, the games are pretty different. Have fun playing Pokemon!
Me and a friend got into PTCG, and bought ourselves a deck each, for Christmas. Is the safest/cheapest option now, to buy a booster pack or two every few months (since we don't know any store that sells singles) or save money and go for the bigger boxes? No, we don't need the accessories, we can build our own boxes, and the dice are included in the battle decks, themselves. Edit: No, we don't have a collection to pull cards from, we started a few weeks ago out of boredom.
Without a store nearby, TCGplayer is a safe option for buying singles online. Otherwise, the best path forward depends on your budget. Also, collection boxes are a great option for getting some of those EX cards (Ogrepon, Ursaluna, Raging bolt, Charizard as promos, and still being able to add pieces as you go from the packs!
i recently bought lost origin build and battle deck because i loved the idea of the lost zone but non of the cards did anything with the lost zone, if you would be able to help build it would be amazing
I love lost zone decks. Honestly, I would consider using TCGplayer to order sets of cards like comfey, colress's experiment, mirage gate, cramorant, etc... They're all pretty cheap cards, and Lost Origin isn't so easy to find sometimes for cheap, so buying the cards is definitely the most efficient way to build the deck!
I'd love to see more products like what they do with Build and Battle, where they just give you a base and then you gotta do the rest. I guess that's just the game in general, lol
Build and battle decks aren't a bad way to build up a decent base for a deck! Just figuring out where to take the deck from that stage would be a challenge, especially for beginners with limited cars choices!
It's still a mystery to me. I bought the box in person from a local game store, so I doubt it. I also think people are more likely to reseal $500+ products instead of $40 boxes that are easy to find!
@@BadLuckBrettTCG that’s true, also thank you greatly for the video after playing legend of Arceous and watching the new Pokémon series. I’m currently inspired to start playing Pokémon cards again, but not sure how to start. So glad to see your video about building Pokémon decks.
So I bought a silver tempest elite trainer box as u suggest here. I would like to know what could be a good second purchase. I'm honestly kinda lost how to proceed here
It depends! Silver Tempest pairs well with other Sword and Shield sets like Lost Origin or Crown Zenith, or just more Silver Tempest. Scarlet and Violet base would help with useful trainer cards you won't find in those sets. It also depends on what you're looking for, and what you like/want to play with!
@@BadLuckBrettTCG tbh I didnt expect this to be so confusing (at least for me lol) Im looking to just have casual fun for now with some homies and collect cool cards I pull out on the sides Sorry bout these noobish questions but if u could suggest me one specific product to buy (Ive seen some call with "builds" ready to play? ) what would it be?
@@joz9540 battle decks are a great place to start with learning the game and deck structure. If you're looking to rip packs and use your cards to build decks, the scarlet and violet era is more likely to set you up with relevant cards and powerful pokemon. Paldean Fates and anything newer are good sets to build a playable collection.
I've been collecting Pokemon cards for about 3 years, mainly for the art work. It might be fun too play. But, like you said, there is really know information on how too for beginners. No offense, but this video doesn't help. You need to start with the basic, first. I really don't get what you're saying .
No offense taken, and I get your perspective. I use general terms to simplify my explanations, but I could have elaborated more on what better examples are and why they work. For what it's worth, I am working on an upgraded version of this video where I work out some of the kinks I've discovered since publishing this video!
Best way to learn to play is to download and play the game… Pokémon tcg live… it’s mobile… other than that battle academy has I think 3 premade decks.. 2 of which are numbered for a step by step play of the game.. just read the directions.. but honestly the monile game has it all

If I remember correctly isn't there a rule about if a card has a printing that's in rotation you can use any printing of that card?
