Fantastic video. I agree, the 11th level Hunter Ranger ability is divine. I only wished I had the discipline to remain a single classed ranger until 11th level. That being said, I in the process of my first ranger build in BG3 since EA. I am attempting this is Honor Mode with the beastmaster subclass. It is both thrilling and depressing that my summons seem to be far more accurate than my character. I truly suspect the laws of probability has been altered in Honor Mode to the point that Halflings might be the default race. Keep up the excellent efforts!! Cheers
Thanks. I do think that before level 11 they do feel lackluster, but once we get to 11 they take off. Halflings really will be a top tier race for honour mode and I'm already regretting not taking one. So many critical misses!
You want to pick up the short swords/daggers in your main/offhand hand that give a crit chance increase, it stacks with the crit chance from the bow. Can also recommend the ring that ass psychic damage when you concentrate on a spell,
I like to use The Graceful Cloth on my archer characters, since they're typically staying away from enemies and don't need the AC so much. That puts them at 20 Dex and frees up a feat, and then they just have free Advantage on all their Dex checks as a bonus.
It’s truly a shame that volley is locked behind lv 11. It’s so late game and making multi-classing with volley in mind pretty limited. I can only think war cleric for 1 level to get that bonus attack for another volley. Just think if we get it at lv 10, enter fighter multiclass I like the resourceless AOE, it’s like you don’t need to think anything lol. Plus that every bit of damage roll you can add your item bonus such as that +2 acid/ light ring, etc.
I feel like it's a great class to respec into at level 11 or 12, but yeah, it really forces you into almost exclusively taking a single class. The war cleric multiclass is a great idea.
I tried this in patch 1 but "war priest strike" (a feature of War domain cleric that allows you do make another weapon attack with your BA) allows you to make another normal attack , so you could make 3 voally attacks in one turn (But with one lvl dip into war cleric you could use war priest strike only 3 times a day )
Such a shame that whirlwind attack has a smaller radius. I still focus on melee as a hunter ranger focusing on whirlwind: enchanted my weapon for extra dmg (lightning), added perma poison dmg, psych dmg when concentrated, extra fire dmg from gloves, acid from ring necro dmg from weapon (melee). My weapon shines like a Christmas tree. I just like to “spin to win” :) As astarion you could let him ascend to gain an extra 1d10 necro dmg per hit.
I like using the sword of chaos, armor of persistance, warding bonds rings from act2 and periapt of wound closures. Just jump amidst everything and start spinning like a beyblade and you just cant die (also dealing massive heaps of damage from great weapon and other items if you wish)
I could not help but think of overcooked meat when I saw you repeatedly roasting the opponents. Keep up the good cooking...er, build guide posts. Have a great day.
Luckily, I don’t have to start over to try new builds haha I ended up starting over again because I could not resist being able to recruit Minthara on a good play through. Having to kill the grove really screwed up my chances with Karlach and I wanted a play through with all my favorite ladies haha so I started over and now I have Minthara, shadowheart, and Karlach all on the same team.
Thanks for the vid! Wouldn’t a sorcerer with 2 fireballs (via quicken) be able to do the same thing? Personally I rather optimize my archers for high single target damage and leave the chaff-clearing to the magic users…
Yeah, they could do, it just depends what you want your characters to do. The upside to doing this with a ranger is that it takes a single consumable, and even without the oil the AoE damage is resourceless and doesn't hurt allies.
Swords bard is more versatile but this ranger uses pretty much 0 resources to be able to do pretty massive and consistent damage. It's almost like being able to throw out 2-6 Fireballs a turn forever (depending on haste/bloodlust potion)
It's already been said, but I think the main upside to hunter rangers is the resourceless AoE damage, it rips through average enemies so quickly. Obviously bards have their own benefits too, but I like the simplicity of the AoE ranged attack, it feels like some sort of shotgun!
Note: The Oil of Combustion *requires fire damage* to start the explosion. Here it is being set off by the Flawed Helldusk Gloves damage.
Thanks for the clarification, I should have made that clear in the video. As always, the best tips are in the comments!
Ahh, the good ol’ days when the Caustic Band was only an uncommon item and costed like 30 gold instead of 1500 gold lol
Yeah, I was shocked in my current run when I got to the myconid colony!!!
That's only in Honour Mode.

Very good points, especially in conjunction with the risky ring.
"Ass psychic damage" 😮
stinky thoughts@@Zyklon_B_still_and_know_God

Minsc as Hunter is great since you get him at lv 12
lol, who?! jk jk he just joins so late i have no reason to favor him over my current members

It should still work I think, but I didn't try it out.

It should work with great weapon master as well, but that reduced range for whirlwind makes it much less useful sadly :(
Using a polearm should give you a bigger range on it.

I never thought ranger would be my favorite class in BG3

Let's see what else I can cook up!
6:46 *trollface "cover youre ~~self~~ weapon in oil"

Fascinating.
This will make great news.
Titan bow with a high strength or Gloves or Potion of hill giant Strength
Does using a polearm boost the AoE from whillwind or its a set distance
Ranger hunter is definitely really good but but beast master is just too cool for me to give up...
how does volley work with the jolt shooter? does every enemy give two lightening charges?
I didn't test it, but I don't see why it wouldn't.
Does the oil stack with the multi arrow? That could be a good substitute.
If you try this, reply and let me know!
I don't know but my random guess is yes
How does this compare with the ranged Swords Bard then I wonder? :)
Swords bard is more versatile but this ranger uses pretty much 0 resources to be able to do pretty massive and consistent damage. It's almost like being able to throw out 2-6 Fireballs a turn forever (depending on haste/bloodlust potion)

He's gret
Did you use cheat to reach lvl 12 at that point in the game? I couldn't even reach lvl 10 when I met Gortash.
No, I just came back out of Baldur's Gate after reaching level 12.
Level 11 is far too late
heavy armor on a ranger? yuck
