@@brandi0005you stole words from me. Yes this is one of the worst deaths on the show. I feel the ending of this season could have been a great end to the show.
I actually really love this episode. I like how spooky Dean got while interrogating Sam and I don’t mind Charlie’s death, it adds more for me then it takes away. 🤷🏻♀️ also, Cas with his “my ride’s here.” 😂
I know a lot of people get upset or angry at the deaths in Supernatural. Because SPN is so good at making characters you quickly come to love (and no, I don’t join that group of female fans that scream, “they kill any strong female!” They kill everybody, people. It’s what they do. 😜). Personally, I think most of the deaths help the overall story (not Bobby’s). If important people don’t die, you stop taking the threat of death seriously. It is hammered home over and over and OVER that hunters meet messy ends. Prove it. Make us feel the danger. And let us see the horrible emotional fall out so that we can grieve with the boys. Key point there (that you made): the show is about Sam and Dean. Flat out. Beautifully written characters like Bobby, Cass, Crowley, or Charlie flesh out the world and make the stories better. But the story is Sam and Dean.
Blame the person who was showrunner back then. The writers didn't want Charlie knocked off. Jared & Jensen argued against it too, but the D.I.C. (Dumbass In Charge) had to have his way. I remember reading about a funny incident that took place at a con. Someone in the crowd asked the panel why was Charlie killed off. Jared, Jensen, and other Spn alumni turned in unism towards Dumbass.
I'm not a huge Charlie fan, so I actually think this is one of her better episodes. I wasn't rooting for her to die or anything but I just think it was well-written, with circumstances leading to her death and Sam and Dean being too late to save her.
I know Felicia Day irl a little through her fan base. She asked me to cohost a podcast with her that we did together for 8 shows a couple years ago. Even with that it took me years to even discuss this episode with her. First, because I really didn't want to break out crying while trying to talk with her about it. Second, Felicia us such a sweet person that I didn't want to bring up anything that was that traumatic with one of her characters. We did eventually have a nice chat, but I admit its still hard for me to watch this episode.
The Supernatural writers have a way to make you get comfortable with everyone feeling safe, and then they hit you with one of these episodes. The main and supporting characters often make it out of "certain death" situations so often that we start to think that they'll be just fine when faced with some random threat - and then they don't.
apparently the writer who "invented" Charlie was supposed to write this episode but he refused to kill Charlie, so Robert Singer gave the script to some other writer, because they wanted more drama between the boys and wanted Charlie to be the catalyser
Knowing what happens in this episode and seeing the length of the video, I knew you'd have a lot of feelings about it. A lot of people have voiced their strong opinions about the end of this episode so I wasn't surprised...
I'm mainly hate the Steins because of their over the top Georgia plantation accents. They're supposed to be from Shreveport, which is basically texaslol and I grew up in the deep south of Louisiana and we don't even sound like that down there
I hated that they killed charlie and the way they did it , but watching this with you again I realized what they were trying to do , they were mirroring what dean did in season 9 and how he sort of gotten kevin killed , and how sam reacted to it , now the roles are reverse and sam acts just like dean did and lo and behold he gets charlie killed!!
I think alot of us who loved Charlie's character were mad that it became, as you said, the catalyst for the rest of the season and what the Character of Dean needs to do. I'm just glad we got to see Sam's IMMEDIATE regret for putting Charlie in danger. Sometimes we don't always see their immediate reactions/guilty faces. Which I think is actually what makes it worse. But yeah. Rowena getting Charlie 100% upon first meeting her.... Does anyone else get the sense that Ruth was trying to portray that Rowena didn't WANT to be right about Charlie's (often times) blind devotion to the brothers in this instance?
I was sad about Charlie’s death JUST because I did love the character herself, but also the writing made me feel like the writers were just like “oh Dean finally has another person he’s able to depend on and trust the loyalty of completely… obviously we have to take them away”.
I've been dreading this episode... I hate that the writers made the choice to kill Charlie.. and I hate that she didn't get an epic fight and a majestic last line or two.. it's disrespectful to Felicia. So much lost potential with the gingers. Aside: bts tidbit.. Ruth and Felicia are the same age..both born in 1979.. couple months apart.. I think Ruth is two months older. Crowley having a conversation with a hamster.. hehehe.
Using Charlie's death to mirror Kevin's just felt so wrong after all the family fluffing and then on top of that - having Crowley/Rowena warn them about their death due to association. Painful to revisit even though I try to understand stakes. Comic Con after this season had Jared, Jensen, Misha and Mark all turning their chairs around to hide leaving Carver shunned in a very clear way.
Why did I ever think I was going to be prepared for this one. In terms of your thoughts and comments being clear and concise, you did infinitely better than I. My thoughts and comments were this: “PAAAAAAAAIIIIIINNNNN!!!!!” …That’s it. As to our dear Charlie: I’m so sorry, Jess.
And this was the episode that I officially checked out of Supernatural... Killing off Charlie was just one step too far for me. she was such a great character and Felica Day played her so well. I did eventually watched the later seasons but I just couldn't find it in my heart to ever forgive the showrunners for this. In my own head cannon she's still back in OZ living her best life with Dorothy.
I think killing off Charlie is completely unnecessary narrative-wise, but if they absolutely had to, couldn’t they have written something stronger than this? It’s very contrived and the reason for her death is “She leaves a secure location because Rowina’s a bit annoying”. I mean, cmon now.
So poorly written. Tell me another time that Sam or Dean cuffed a guy by one hand and left his other arm free. Charlie was so whiny this episode. I would've been okay with killing Charlie off if it had been well done.
Yuup.. this until the finale were some of the toughest episodes to watch live 😢.. Dean has literally said Charlie is a little sister to him and Sam.. you can absolutely guess what Dean is going to do now 🤬😡
Losing Charlie was frustrating, but kind of expeccted (as in, we love her and she is a woman in Supernatural), but losing her like that, off screen, was terrible. She earned an on-sceen death, at least, guys. (I'm looking at you, SPN writers and show runner.)
The worst part is that the only reason given was 'The plot demanded it', when LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE could have driven a wedge between Sam and Dean. I kept watching until the series ended, but this episode came the closest to making me quit.
This episode Jess. This fucking episode. It didn't make me sad, it just pissed me off and if it weren't for the fact the season was at its end I would've dropped the show at this point. There was no reason to kill Charlie off. I started this season's reaction by saying I consider this the worst season, and while I'm not going to say this episode is the reason why it does contribute.
I was fine with Charlie being killed, even thoughit was brutal and felt unnecessary. As you said, we learn to expect it with side characters. I just wish it hadn't been at the hands of such a crap villain, and, honestly, slightly crap writing. There was a window.
This is without a doubt the worst death of any character on television. Worst meaning stupidest decision ever made by writers. Wtf was this? Off-screen, disrespectful, abrupt, dumb, etc. Never ever got over this one.
"I barely know the man" is one of my fave Rowena lines 😂
LoL it's a good line
One of the most devastating deaths in Supernatural.
Uuuuummm there's another at the end of the series too
@@brandi0005you stole words from me. Yes this is one of the worst deaths on the show. I feel the ending of this season could have been a great end to the show.
Was anyone else scared for Sam's life when Dean was interrogating him? Cause that acting and background music had me on edge
The tension in that sense actually gives me hiccups!
I would have been so terrified if that was directed to me. Angry dean is scary lol
Yep there it is. That reaction.

I don't think I've ever agreed more with a single comment. I'm not gonna add anything, because just...this exactly. 😁
THERE WAS A FREAKING WINDOW, which Felicia Day pointed out but the director just said shut up. Everyone was mad about it forever.
Charlies never notice the windows
I'm never gonna forgive The Show for kill Charlie the finale will be absolutely incredible and crazy

The other writers in question being Brad Buckner and Eugenie Ross-Leming, the least popular writers on the show. Supernatural's Dan and Dave
Rowena was right and I wished she was wrong. Charlie's love/loyalty for the Winchester brothers got her killed.
Cas:”Sam this never ends well!”
God that should be the motto of the show 😂
But yeah whoever the brothers keep a secret it always ends badly

That was one of the hardest ones ... as hard as Ellen & Jo.
RIP to one the the GOATS
You always make perfect sense.
Crowley was always right: everyone should run away from Winchesters
I hated that they killed charlie and the way they did it , but watching this with you again I realized what they were trying to do , they were mirroring what dean did in season 9 and how he sort of gotten kevin killed , and how sam reacted to it , now the roles are reverse and sam acts just like dean did and lo and behold he gets charlie killed!!
Oh yes....the next 2 episodes are going to be action packed!!!!

yeah, this one really hurt.
Oh, girl 💔 let me cuddle you. Heartbreaking.
No matter how prepared you are you are never prepared for that scene . How long did it take you to recover before you could record the final thoughts
