I have never before heard this topic discussed. Thank you Matt and Fr. Pine. Let me tell you, this is a huge relief. I don't actually participate in most of the devotions people try to press on me, but I end up feeling pointlessly guilty and looked down upon. I think your discussion here will free me from that. There are three devotions which I know can settle me and make me attentive to the Lord's presence. From now on, I intend to do those more consistently. Again, thank you.
This helped me as a convert. When I initially came in, I wanted every single novena for every saint, I wanted as many different devotions as I could get. It was wearing me out though and I wasn’t feeling connected with any. We pretty much stick to the Rosary and the Divine Mercy chaplet. The saints I include in all my prayers to try to cultivate a sense of friendship with are BVM, St. Joseph, St. Paul, St. Padre Pio, and St. Michael. Anyway, once I realized simplifying things and that sometimes “less is more,” it made things better.
Personally, I make sure to pray the Breviary (Liturgy of the Hours) daily. Although very common it is very unheard of for some reason however, I highly recommend it aside from the Holy Rosary. God bless!🙏💖
Thank you for sharing your experience. I was baptized catholic, but did not practice my faith for long time. I have been back now for a couple of years and feel the same way you do. Sticking to basics that work for every season of your life is the best.
My favorite devotions are to the Sacred Heart and the Divine Mercy (did you know there's a pretty fierce rivalry between some proponents of these devotions?!?). I'm very glad you addressed this topic. I have family members who insist that to be a proper Catholic, I must attempt to practice every devotion out there, and I have felt very overwhelmed. The same people insist I practice various devotions that are directly linked to indulgences... and my thinking is, good prayer is good prayer full stop- and I'd rather accidentally gather these indulgences, rather than tick them off a list.
My gang: Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mary Undoer of Knots, Divine Mercy, St. Joseph, the guardian angels and archangels, the rosary, St John Paul II, and Blessed Laura Vicuña
L C Ringo wel I'm glad you asked. She was a South American girl who had a story much like St. Maria Goretti. I invite you to search her on google. She is near and dear to me because she is an additional patron of abuse victims, and I like her for other reasons as well.
There have been times when I am in front of the Blessed Sacrament, and I have been so distraught that I could not pray the rosary or could not read the Bible. My priest told me that when that happens, my tears ARE my prayer. Sometimes I want to meet with God on my terms, but that's not how it works!
The only requirements (from a Latin perspective): 1. Go to Sunday/Holy Day of Obligation Mass 2. Engage in the sacraments 3. Read the bible with some regularity Everything else should be done to taste. I'm personally a Divine Office and Rosary everyday person in addition to the requirements.
That part about not being able to do everything, but only the one thing you are supposed to do reminded me of something C.S. Lewis said about people growing more different from each other the closer to God they are. God's plans for every individual are so different from each other, it doesn't matter what others are called to, what matters is how you pick up your cross.
To the founders of this channel, thank you so much for making this incredible education source. And for having no fear for speaking the truth..bless you all.
there was a time that that I tried to do so many. I was overwhelmed! I love my daily rosary, My St. Faustina readings, Mass naturally and scripture readings. Like Marcella, it is relief to view this video. Some days we all need to know that we are doing ok.
Can't express how helpful this talk and fr. Gregory's talks in general are for scroupulous people. This made me so relieved. Thank you and God bless you!
Thank you so much for this, so freeing, i felt I had to do the rosary daily, say this Chaplet, that Chaplet and have no time for sitting in Gods presence, which is what i really feel i should do daily
This is a very necessary subject to address. It's interesting how recently we were discussing this topic with our catholic friends and didn't manage to make any conclusions and now I came across this video. It's refreshing to listen to Fr. Pine. God bless!
I really found the explanation on the goal of time spent during a holy hour very helpful. I would love a more detailed discussion with examples of how the goal of the text is mediation, goal of meditation is prayer, goal of prayer contemplation etc. I have re listened to this many times and would appreciate having it explained again. I found this so helpful! The explanation on the different devotions according to ones disposition so reassuring.. truely one of the best videos I’ve watched abs I watch daily! I learnt so much about sacraments, graces, saints, indulgence, devotions. All the things you think about when you are intentionally trying to grow in faith. Thank you . I also love the comment’ about allowing diversity not expecting conformity. Such an encouraging show. Fr has a great gift of making the faith known and loved. Thank you both!!
Thank you! I needed to hear this. Lately I have so many devotions being recommended to me through youtube and I felt guilty not doing them or like it's a loss because of the graces I won't be able to receive. Quality over quantity is the key and asking God first to lead me to what I should do.
I found out quickly after converting that I had to pick, but I think God shows us some that are suitable. Mine are divine mercy because I need it, and I wear a brown scapular and a miraculous medal. I also did the first Fridays once but I feel the sacred heart and divine mercy are basically two sides of the same coin, so I went with divine mercy.
My depressive days ceased when me and my grandmother began the rosary 3 months after quarantine began. My secular readings became more consistent, I got more empowerment for working out, my conscience found its voice so much so that sometimes I'm mysteriously compelled to open a certain place in the Bible, and I do exercise Á Kempis' words now in isolation. Behin with one and it will make all the difference. Blessed be the Orani Virgin of the Holy Rosary.
I loved Fr. Pine common sense and wisdom, which is something I am currently asking the Holy Spirit to bless me with. I am also learning about proverbs to get more enlightenment. Definitely am an F.O.M.O (Fear of missing out) type of person and the catholic church has a wealth of devotions, that can sometimes be overwhelming. Thank you for sharing your views both Matt and Fr. Pine.
I'm a new convert. Ar first, i was really averse to the Rosary for two reasons: 1) Everyone does it. 2) I wasn't quite comfortable with prayers to Mary out numbering all the other prayers. Now, I love the Rosary! I've decised that I'll stick with the Rosary and go to adoration and let that be enough for now.
I like to acknowledge my own special litany of favourite saints in thanksgiving for their influence in my life, but my go to devotions are the rosary and the chaplet of mercy.

Brilliant how they incorporate the SCARCITY of our attention and cognitive bandwidth. The most ideal description of TRADEOFFS and value garnered by specific courses of action. This could very easily be an economics tutorial. This is the best way to put a very authoritative nail in the coffin of UTOPIANISM
I found the amount of private devotions overwhelming- especially when they were presented by some as necessary. I've been Catholic for 10 years now, and my primary devotions currently are to the Holy Family, St Bernard writings, and praying at a little prayer corner of Byzantine festal icons that I've set up in my home.
There are times I feel overwhelmed with having too many devotions. To simplify my Prayer Life, what are the most important essentials to narrow down to?
Hey, I'm two years late to this comment, but for me, first comes Bible reading or lectio divina; then the classics like the Liturgy of the Hours (at least, Lauds and Vespers everyday if possible), the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Rosary. I put reading first, because we need to learn our Scriptures.
I always pray the Corona of Our Lady of Consolation and a devotee of St. Dismas, St. Augustine of Hippo, St. Camillus de Lellis, the Guardian Angels and the Sto. Niño.
@3:10 Well some of us have good reason to despair, if he hasn't revealed or indicated anything to us. Sometimes I think I was lead to the Church as some cosmic joke, but I know that can't be true, because I'm not that important.
He said depending on the circumstance it may be better to have 30 minutes of meditation than go to mass. Is this not a sin? I always thought missing mass intentionally was a mortal sin
This is my hot take, bear with me: it's not so much that you choose a devotion or a number of them, much as THEY choose you for a reason. When in doubt, keep it as simple as you can. The LOTH is a no-brainer. After that, be attentive to what the Holy Spirit may hint at you.
How can Holy Mass be substituted with 30 minutes of meditation? I thought Holy Mass & Holy Communion (worthily) was the 'source and summit' of our faith. Please help me understand this...
I keep a Meticulous Medal on my person I keep a Rosary in my handbag so I never go out without one. I do not like seeing a Rosary around the neck, that was promoted when a priest told us it disrespected the rosary.
Yes there are too many devotions, not only too many, but too many needless ones. Christ Jesus is all we need, all that matters, the rest is nothing but noise. Matthew 27:51 [51] And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. This is why Jesus says; John 14:13-14 [13] Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. [14] If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. John 15:7-9 [7] If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. [8] By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. [9] As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. John 16:23-24 [23] In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. [24] Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
Great video! I have a question though. When it comes to praying the Rosary, our Lady told us to do it in all/many of her apparitions. Isn't it the case that all faithful Catholics should be praying the Rosary everyday and not just an option?
Eucharistic Adoration is really a public devotion, so aside from that, among (private) devotions the Rosary has objective pride of place. There has not been a canonised Catholic Saint that I'm aware of, since the Rosary has become universalised, that has not prayed it. The enduring "hype" from the faithful concerning it is unparalleled, plus the the approved apparitions etc. Still, the Church does not bind one in the domain of private prayer. It remains a freedom proper to all the Christian faithful. The Church only legislates for Public Worship. Still, the word "should" can be said regarding the praying of the Rosary, however, one ought to understand clearly what the nature of this "should" is - i.e. a "should" of serious recommendation based on x, y, z, within the Church's life and experience, and the testimony of Her Saints; not based on what is mandated by the Church and is morally binding. Hence fervour in encouraging others to pray the Rosary should be tempered by discretion and Wisdom. Objectively the Rosary is up there. It is universally encouraged and not praying it will objectively be less beneficial than not. But subjectively someone COULD be doing just as well in the spiritual life without it. (Note: "COULD," it is possible). But if despite knowing its value one resists praying the Rosary for unreasonable reasons, in such a case it could serve as an act of resistance to the prompting of the Spirit, and thus grace itself. Hence in such a context not praying the Rosary could hinder one's spiritual life. In brief: I recommend all to pray the Rosary. But I do not judge Catholics who don't, and don't pressure them. I encourage, elicit, explain, and pray that they might.
Great chat. / Even though the clip didn't discuss it, I only want to mention about Our Lady and St. Joseph because of possible misunderstanding. Devotion to both is objectively universal. By virtue of the Order of the Hypostatic Union, consisting of Mary and Joseph in union with Jesus, devotion to Mary and Joseph is intrinsic to Christian devotion. There are many ways such devotion/s can take form (many!). The actual devotion to these Saints is unique among other Saints. Our Lady first, to whom hyperdulia is due; and St. Joseph, the Universal Patron of the Church, second, to whom proto-dulia (first-veneration) is due. Dulia is proper to the other Saints. That's why one can stress the universality of devotion to Mary and Joseph as central to Catholic spirituality - it's for everyone, and everyone objectively should have such devotion. However, one ought to respect subjectivity, "seasons" in people's lives, where each person is at - some aren't ready or disposed to Marian, nevermind Josephine devotion. This is where wisdom is needed. Jesus doesn't force people to take-in His Mother, nor to befriend His Virginal Appointed Father, Joseph. He wants us to know them desperately. But Christ's meek and gentle approach is a guide to us too.
I doubt anyone will read this but, just gotta say. He didn't mention not even one scripture (from God's Word), in his talk about devotions. I am a Protestant and it is so strange to me to see a Christian not use scripture almost exclusively. And that just seems to be universal Catholic practice. As a follower of Jesus Christ I could never subscribe to a religion that so roundly ignores God's Word. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God... In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. John 1:1-2, 4-5 It's the Word, the Word, the Word. And not human reason.
At 5:14, he says Scripture is a "good, holy, sanctifying, privileged" devotion. God's Word/Revelation is not only found in the Bible - there is the unwritten or spoken Word, also known as Sacred Tradition. Sacred Tradition - which came from God - existed even BEFORE Sacred Scripture did. That's the reason Catholics don't exclusively use Scripture. We acknowledge other sources of God's Revelation. We do not ignore God's Word - not in the slightest. If you're able, go to a Catholic Mass - during the week, or on Sunday - and you will hear lots of Scripture. Just make sure you don't receive the Eucharist, which is literally the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ - you must be Catholic, and in a state of grace in order to receive Him in the Eucharist. EDIT: or if you can't make it to Mass, there are plenty of Masses you can view online. Here's one: ua-cam.com/video/k7kXfAMlETI/v-deo.html
Dear Fr. Gregory Pine, I love listening to your wisdom, but I think your analogy with praying the Rosary was poorly thought out because praying the Rosary is known to be rather helpful in avoiding the sort of mistake you have used in your analogy. I have heard people say that praying the Rosary helps them get better organised. I have personally noticed that since I began praying the Rosary daily and most often on the Train, that I have never missed my train stop. It’s unbelievable. I miss my stop when reading an interesting story on Metro newspaper or a book, but I never miss my stop even when I’ve my eyes closed and completely lost in the Holy Rosary.
@@hellebartelsen8208 Amen, Helle. And if a Protestant wishes to disparage devotions he'll have to do away with his devotion to Bible reading, daily prayer, etc. Since he rightly doesn't wish to do that he should agree that devotions can be good and ought to be directed towards Christ.
@@pintswithaquinas Would Bible reading be considered a devotion? Like if I were to do a devotion to St. Daniel, I can read the Book of Daniel and ask him to pray for me and be my friend?
Give the Church a break. Are there more not worthless shows on Netflix and other places than devotions on the Church? Does the devil not have many more ways to tempt and to destroy souls than the Church has devotions? And what harm are those brothers and sisters doing to you by recommending a particular devotion which they practice? Why do you become uncomfortable and upset? Does not Satan insists even harder in making you sin in order to drag you into the fires of Hell? Why are you so ungrateful to those who offer you something good? Be grateful them to God that your brothers and sisters try to make you practice a devotion to help you come closer to God and save your souls, despite your ingratitude towards them and towards God.
I think the problem is somewhat like being offered tasty food when you are full - "Yes, grandma, your cooking is lovely. No, grandma, I don't want thirds."
@@petardraganov3716 Absolutely right. Some people never prayed the LOTH before, yet the moment they learn you don't particularly pray the rosary they look at you as if you had just kicked a puppy!
Yup. Catholics tend not to have time or interest in the only devotion they should have. To Jesus Christ the Savior, Son of the Living God, the Messiah, the only object of our worship.
Intercessory prayers are instructed by St. Paul in 1 TIMOTHY 2:1. What does EPHESIANS 6:18 says? MAKING SUPPLICATION FOR ALL THE SAINTS ! Mary is not just a saint, she is the Ark of the New Covenant, The NT Gebirah, Daughter of Zion and the woman of revelation that is why we pray for her protection and intercession. SUPPLICATION (DEFINITION) - The action of asking or begging for something earnestly or humbly. EPHESIANS 6:18 Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, LUKE 1:28 HAIL FULL OF GRACE ROMANS 16:6 Salute Mary, who hath laboured much among you. Saints and angels in heaven interceding for us in REVELATION 4, 5, 6, 8. "Mediator" is Christ alone in one sense. As intercessors all members are " mediators". according to Catholicism and Scripture: 1- The Church is the body of Christ 2- There is only one body of Christ, not one on earth and another one in heaven. 3- Death does not separate the members of the body. 4- Christians are bound by the Law of Christ to love and pray for one another.

my toxic trait is praying to the lesser known saints because I know the famous ones are busy. I just see long lines in my head.
St. Ansgar
Devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi and Blessed Karl of Austria!
How could there ever be too many devotions?
There's not enough.😊
Do few things but do them well 🙂
Do the devotions lead to Jesus Christ?
I think that’s the idea, if done with that intention and done out of love.
I had this question too, except I am aware of a certain caveat, which is that the Church does not bind the faithful to belief in apparitions.
That's why I'm a bit curious and concern. Also because this is a recommendation to all faithful (generic) and a means to fight today's evil.
I don't enjoy praying the Rosary. I have started again recently. What I will do is to ask Jesus & my Angel to let me know if this is what He wants.
Yes, too many devotions. I just stick to the rosary & the novena to OLPH.
John 1:1-2, 4-5
It's the Word, the Word, the Word.
Why would scripture need to be used almost exclusively?
There is not enough
Please stop interrupting your interviewee, it's very distracting.
7:17 Leave it to Matt to bring sex into it.😂🤣
I was actually shocked at 4:27. Why would Cosmo deserve a slot in this conversation?! And Father Pine’s reaction at 4:31… ㅠㅜ
People should stop worrying about devotions if they don't attend Latin Mass (or any of the ancient liturgies). Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi.
2:50 - this whole section explains Protestant spirituality perfectly. I’m shocked to hear it from a Catholic!
Elaborate, please?
What?! 😂
Probably just stick to one devotion, which is to Christ?
Every devotion is essentially directed towards Christ. Otherwise you're doing it wrong.
@@hellebartelsen8208 Let's hope so
@@pintswithaquinas Would Bible reading be considered a devotion? Like if I were to do a devotion to St. Daniel, I can read the Book of Daniel and ask him to pray for me and be my friend?
I also love how he says that the Scriptures are the one reliable source for devotion.
Next: too many religious orders?? I think so
Yup. Catholics tend not to have time or interest in the only devotion they should have. To Jesus Christ the Savior, Son of the Living God, the Messiah, the only object of our worship.
We literally eat His Body and drink His Blood. I'd call that interest.
To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
LUKE 1:28 HAIL FULL OF GRACE
ROMANS 16:6 Salute Mary, who hath laboured much among you.
Saints and angels in heaven interceding for us in REVELATION 4, 5, 6, 8.
"Mediator" is Christ alone in one sense. As intercessors all members are " mediators". according to Catholicism and Scripture:
1- The Church is the body of Christ
2- There is only one body of Christ, not one on earth and another one in heaven.
3- Death does not separate the members of the body.
4- Christians are bound by the Law of Christ to love and pray for one another.
The Divine Mercy chaplet is a devotion literally about asking the Father to have mercy on the world for the sake of Christ’s passion.
Saint worship is worship of the dead. Jesus said" follow me", not follow saints.
are you serious dude?
Excellent!
