Great content, thanks for this video! My gauge was stuck all the way to the right past full. I dropped the tank and replaced the sending unit yesterday but my gauge is still stuck. I'm guessing I should check the fuse next? Maybe test the gauge itself somehow? Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Car is a 68 firebird. Thanks!
Old school auto instrument guy here, NEVER NEVER NEVER, connect any of these thermal gauges directly to ground. They operate on 5 volts NOT 12, at "Full" or "High" the resistance is 10 ohms through to Earth. If you run the gauge directly to Earth, the full 5 volts runs through the heating winding in the gauge and in just a few seconds it's curtains for the gauge. If you perform this test, use a 10 OHM resistor in line from earth to the gauge. NEVER NEVER NEVER connect the gauge directly to earth !
I have a 1980 CJ5 with the fuel gauge and temp gauge inside the speedo cluster. When I turn my key, the gauge reads from below E to at E, and does not go past it. Any suggestions? I know I dropped a new sending unit in there, without checking the calibration. The temp gauge still works. The tank is a poly. Plus I will check the grounding wire on the sending unit.
Could one just take a battery to the back of the car and connect it from there? Or does it have to run to the battery terminal inside the car connected to the ground wire?
I have a 71 Chevelle I pulled the fuel tank and replaced the sending/float unit because the gauge would stick on fuel. I noticed that the stop tabs for fuel and empty were bent off to the side. When I pushed the float all the way up past the fuel tab it would stick there. So when I installed the new sending unit I did not bend the tabs. Now when the tank is full the gauge read between 3/4 and 1/2. Once the fuel gets down between 3/4 and 1/2 then the gauge works. Any ideas on what’s wrong?
I filled up my 1968 mustang the other day it has an after market gauge that worked great but,I think filling it up all the way somehow made the float stuck any suggestions?
What does it mean when gauge reads full and I changed out the fuel sending unit thinking that was the problem. And still have a full reading with a drained tank
When you apply a ground the gauge goes from empty to full, so I would ohm the wire to a ground on the car and see if it moves if it does then the wire is touching a ground somewhere if it’s ok then check your gauge
1977 Camaro. My gas gage always reads over full even when car is off and I understand that it could be grounded somewhere else but how can I check or where can I find where it is grounded at? Thanks
Thanks for your video. I have a 78 ford Thunderbird diamond jubilee, and my car have that problem, it doesn't show any fuel but I know there is some in. Do I can find the gas gauge at the autoparts, do they still have it?
I Have a question. Say if we ran the ground wire from the battery and the gauge did NOT move, what would be issue then? Since it would NOT be the sending unit
@@AutoRepairTips757 okay, want to start by saying thank you so much for the quick reply AND awesome video. To follow that up, how I check for the gauge itself? The fuse part should be easy. But this is my first time around the block so I just need a little direction. Thanks a lot man.

Ok so my fuel gauge only reads full when i turn the key. So does that mean its grounded? If so, do i then unplug the sending unit to see if the fuel guage drops?
I have a 72 Oldsmobile Cutlass and my gas gauge needle is past the Full level all they way to the oil temperature indicator. I have a picture but it won't attach to my message
any idea why my gauge wants to work sometimes and not work? everytime i fill the car its at full then as i start to drive it drops and then goes back up and does whatever it wants. Ill order the parts and replace it but i wish i could understand
..I am puzzled,..so you are applying 12v into that sensor (you call a ground wire) wire, turning the key and you say the guauge should go to full? ..am I to remove the 12v from my ignition prior? I have an brand new made in the USA auto meter fuel gauge, 3 terminals, ground, sensor, and ignition.

Check the wire make sure it’s not short to ground because if it’s ground out somewhere along the way it’ll cause your gauge to read full

Are you running the ground wire from the battery all the way to the tank to test it?
Yes

Yes had this question too
@@dreamingcode Check your local auto parts store they should have a tool to get the gas out safely

Unplug it and run some test to narrow it down

Check fuse, check for a bad wire and check the gauge itself.

No problem, you can check OHMS between the gauge and the wire at the sending unit.

Check the fuse first, if that’s ok then check for power and ground at the cluster
