Obviously if you’re boating in waters where you’re far from shore or there could be a long while before anyone reaches you, being much more prepared is essential.
I fish a very tall grass and shallow secluded area100 miles from home alone most times. So calling for help won't help me. Tools I carry. Flashlight, Leatherman, screw bits and handle, spark plug tool, pliers, air horn, patch putty, small wrench & socket set, mosquito spray, rags, cup and a sponge. If motor fails and I can't making it back to open water so I can troll back to vehicle I'm spending the night and try again day break. I must really love fishing because it's happened twice so far when I first started going out there.
My list other than the required safety stuff: spark plugs, fuses, multi tool pliers, screw driver with changeable tips, pull rope for the engine,sockets to fit engine cover to get to manual start, extra drain plug, two electric bilge pumps,one manual pump, 7 bailers, air horn, electric siren,clay putty to patch a hole or crack. If I don't need it, it is just stored somewhere under a deck on in my livewell, but if you are stranded out there, too late to get it.
I always have my Leatherman Wave (similar idea to your Swiss Army Knife), but I also have a stainless steel crescent wrench a couple spare cotter pins and some spare plugs that fit my through hulls. The plugs are there in case I need to plug a through hull to prevent sinking. The cotter pins are there incase I drop one while clearing line from around my prop shaft on my main motor or the trolling motor. The crescent wrench is there so I can pull the prop off to get to the line wrapped around the prop shaft. I also have a charging cable for my phone. All in all, pretty minimal tools. Everything else I carry is required personal safety stuff like a small first aid kit, fire extinguisher, paddle, life jackets and throwable floatation. The one thing I'm adding to my tool kit this next summer is a small pair of wire cutters. I got a hook stuck in me last year when a fish suddenly thrashed and a wire cutter would have ben really handy for removing the hook. Not sure if that's a boat tool or a personal safety item, but it's going on the boat.
Upgrade the Swiss army knife for a Leatherman or similar multi tool. Can't tell you how many times mine has gotten me out of a jam on the water. I never leave home without it.
Another great video ! Finally got me a fishing boat and I’m thinking multi tool and maybe a small adjustable wrench. This is something I try to carry in every truck I have ever owned and that is bungy cords. I know that’s not a tool but those things have saved me several times 😂
Great video mate.Yes you can never really carry everything you may need but most breakdowns are caused by in order Fuel,electrical,mechanical issues. I am covered for all those things failing on my boat and have the skills and parts necessary to fix both fuel and electrical issues.Mechanical issues it depends....I have spare impellor, plugs,prop,bearings,rotor etc. I'm pretty well covered.I have cell phone,knives,etc too. I have never broken down in decades of boating out on the water as I do all my own preventative maintenance on everything not just my boat but cars etc too. Keep up the great work.
@@kaseyc5078 Yes, have twice.Once on a mates boat and another time helping a stranger.It's not hard.Once was done breaching the boat and the other time we retrieved boat and did it in car park and kept fishing. 🤣
I like to run a small boat and I make sure to have the ability to remove the prop on both the motor and trolling motor and extra shear pins for each then of course a few other small tools to deal with other minor potentials.
Most boaters in my area have a smaller auxillary engine to get home in emergency.I often come home on the 9.9 to lengthen time on the water and to keep engine in good running order.I do think you are crazy because you are a boater, as am I !!! CHEERS from Westcoast Vancouver Island

I’d replace that swiss army knife for something with pliers, those are always useful. Also, I’d have a lanyard on it so you don’t drop it in the water while cutting that rope stuck in your propeller. A serrated blade is preferable in my opinion.
I should add that I only take my boat on a small electric only lake, so I'm only running a trolling motor. If I had a gas motor I would likely bring more tools.
Good ideas. Try using an Army ammo box. Handy, waterproof, easily storable, easy to find. Another great tool, not that yours isn't a good one, but I would suggest using a Leatherman. I keep a few different tools. A budget socket set from Harbor Freight thas several sockets in a puck, handy. Another is a multi-bit screwdriver, pliers, needle-nose, etc. Good video
Part of my edc is a Leatherman, which in my mind is better then Swiss army because I always need another pair of pliers lol and a bit of extra duct tape on my paddle about it besides what’s in my tackle box but I’m pretty new to this oh and got a milk crate 👍

I carry more tools than anyone. Jump box, screw drivers, starting fluid, wire strippers, socket wrenches, heck at one point I had a new starter on the boat just in case. Rather be safe than sorry
So basically my take away , dont be a dumbass.. do the maintenance prior to going on the water ... or dont go on the water . yup pretty much how it goes. If i didnt trust a boat enough to feel like i required a large tool box at all times. i would just get a new boat

A friend of mine cleaned the carburetor with a leatherman multi tool and some fish hooks on the water. Epic

Yeah sometimes we bring along one of those little cell phone rechargers when we're going on longer boat rides.
P.M. is the best. I carry a Swiss army knife daily. I keep tools on board and glad I do has helped me on a few occasions along with helping others.

I carry a leatherman multi tool- it has pliers which is a definite upgrade from Swiss Army knife but just as compact.

Just a few tools, one being a multi tool which is a few tools.
I say the tools if your motor would breakdown
But often there's parts needed when we breakdown and trying to plan for all of the possibilities can be daunting.
