Brookside was great, my best friend had all the 1s from 1982-1989, on VHS. I used to love the rows in the Grant household, especially between Bobby, and Barry. Sue Johnston, and Ricky Tomlinson were an awesome double act, and I loved them as Barbara, and Jim Royle, in The Royle Family, too. I miss it, cos Brookside put Liverpool, and its people on the map, and Brookie was like Liverpool's Shameless, legendary. My favourite characters were Jimmy Corkhill, and Sinbad.

Brookside was real I mean there was real character's real houses & real life it touch what was going on in society & never afraid to do taboo subjects that other soaps wouldn't even touch. My two favorite families was The Grants & The Corkhills but above all my favorite character was Barry Grant played by Paul Usher

No matter how well the sets for the other major soaps are constructed, they'll never have the authenticity of Brookside. You can't get any more real than real. The gritty stories often attracted criticism, but I think they were extremely well written and thought provoking. At least before it lost its way with gangs, guns and explosions towards the end. The Corkhill's were certainly one of the show's foremost families, but they ended up exhausting their potential and Jimmy Corkhill was given some ludicrous stories in much later years. I started watching in the early 90's, immediately after the conclusion of the story where Barry Grant killed Sue and Danny. From this point onwards, Barry was given nothing to do. He owned the club and sometimes flitted by but was never given any storyline whatsoever. When Paul Usher returned to the show in the late 90's, following a couple of years away, they did beef up his role but reduced the complexity of his character to a lazy, one dimensional, gangster with a gun. For the earlier part of the decade, he may as well have not even been in it. They did so little with him, that I was almost unaware that the character existed at all. He was just some chap who occasionally spoke to Jimmy. Very occasionally, at that.

I agree the houses were built in the same year between 1981/82 when my parents were in highnam southwest Gloucester so it felt realistic to me as they look very similar my parents still live there too this day 😍
