    Little did they know it would be axed 16 years later. It was a shame how the show lost its way in its last couple of years.

    They mentioned Corrie being on for 25 years and they hoped to stagger to that length, but unfortunately they only made it to 21 years 😢. I wish they'd release it ALL on dvd. I loved Brookie back in the day, my favourite soap

      Sounds good to me! Gotta be more to television these days than just reality crap. They could update the family setup for todays climate , new storylines, new characters???? Only thing is though, the original set has now gone. It was sold off a few years ago. So channel ( whichever could still be channel 4???) Would have to build a new set. Would it be identical or an updated version as todays new build homes now look different to designs back in the 80s. Still a great idea though mate! 👍I'm all for it.

    Thanks for posting this. Very interesting and lovely to see Jim Wiggins and Doreen Sloane (Paul and Annabelle Collins) as themselves - they rarely (if ever) seemed to give interviews during their time in Brookside. However, I think this is from 1988 rather than 1987 - Annabelle's affair with Brian was in 1988, and the Grants' house is boarded up - the Grants moved out of Number 5 in1988.

    I think the success behind Brookside; it was about working class families in the suburbs of Liverpool climbing out of poverty and living on a new build estate, but at the same time, dealing with the social and economic pressures during the rise of Thatcher's boom era and into the 90's modern technology age. That's probably why most of us working class people could relate to this program. Also, Liverpool was emerging as a trendy and vibrant city with new industrial developments, offices, homes and nightlife. Liverpool Football Club dominated the 80's. This city was the place to be. Not to mention, the talented and unique personalities, such as Ricky Tomlinson (Bobby Grant), Michael Starke (Sinbad), Dean Sullivan (Jimmy Corkhill). Bill Dean (Harry Cross), John Burgess (David Crosbie) and Paul Usher (Barry Grant). The show had plenty of Liverpool humour, snarky one liners and banter. Like with most great shows, everything has a beginning and end (a shelf life). It reached its limit around 2003 and it was the right time to pull the plug. Most of their golden actors had moved on and the show looked exhausted and out of ideas. Then it became a one man band show about Barry Grant's criminal activities. I would say the same about Corrie, East Enders and Emmerdale, they are way past their sell by date and have lost their romance and magic. They should've been axed years ago. They're dragging them out on legacy, reputation and keeping their loyal audience going with very low ratings.

      Another thing that set Brookside apart from most other soaps with the exception of Take the High Road which was also mostly filmed on location is the fact that it was filmed on a real close.

    • @MichaelHoare-vr7mo
      @MichaelHoare-vr7mo 10 місяців тому

      Yes,I also agree with you on Corrie and Eastenders they are running out of good storylines with humour mixed into them,they are starting to become preachy ,boring and humourless may be the time has come to pull the plug on them too.

    it started off so well people used to talk about the programme in the pubs like they did about East enders but sadly ran out of ideas by the late 1990s and they were doomed to failure

    I actually believe it was axed because of over ambition, and not keeping the soap simple,it's popular image was reality and down to earth roaress, when drug dealers started moving in and helicopters started dropping out the sky, it was losing its appeal , especially with the night club and, and all that flashy stuff, I personally don't think it was Brookside anymore by the nauties, but hey, I could be wrong.

      There was an over reliance on Lindsay Corkhill as time progressed. The show fell into the gangsters and guns trap. It's a very cheap way of thrilling an audience, which ultimately doesn't deliver quality in the long term. But the real decline set in with the arrival of the Musgrove's and the Shadwick's. It's not that the actors weren't good, and not entirely that the writing was bad either. The issue was that the show suddenly became dominated by new characters who were not adequately established, with storylines too strong. The Nicky Shadwick rape story seemed to go on forever. It was hard to care about it, because you really didn't know the characters well enough. Simultaneously, the parade went through a heavy and implausible makeover which made it an unfamiliar setting overnight, and saw the introduction of yet more new faces such as a yuppie doctor and some other such similar personalities. By 1999, the show entered a terminal faze of flip-flopping between very mundane goings-on and over the top action to try and pep it up. By the end it got ridiculous. I think Channel 4 should have given it a chance to recover, but I can see why they axed it. It did look like it had driven itself into a cul-de-sac, ironically.

    • @johnmscott4556
      @johnmscott4556 5 років тому +1

      Maybe,in future, just keep things simple, everyday life, means exactly that, that's what I believe keeps the British public interested in soaps.

    • @scotthawthorne3760
      @scotthawthorne3760 2 роки тому

      @@97channel totaly agree mate. The minute writers start heading down the guns, drugs and gangsters road, is the time to switch off. That's why the likes of eastenders is on its dying knees. Dont know anyone at work or whatever that watches it anymore. Sure writers could come up with other stuff surely???? Come on all you broadcasting groups. Someone give Brookie a second life!

    • @97channel
      @97channel 2 роки тому

      @@scotthawthorne3760 @Scott Hawthorne Thing is with EastEnders, it's been given a golden ticket lifeline, with the overspend on the new set coming in at something like £90million. The BBC cannot axe it right now, though its performance dictates that it probably should go, and surely not even within the next ten years. Whereas Brookside declined for around five years before it got axed, it'll be around 2032 before the BBC can realistically even consider axing EastEnders. And ITV are about to punish them hard, by permanently putting Emmerdale directly up against it. Guarantee that it'll be the BBC who flinch, and reschedule EastEnders to try and pull it out of a ratings crisis.

  • @CyberSlammer2024
    @CyberSlammer2024 Рік тому +1

    I think the problem with Brookside is it went to four times a week and was trying to compete with all the other soaps and it just burnt itself out rather than keep me to being real life and political. It was absolutely brilliant from 1984 until the late 90s and then indeed lost its way.

    • @MichaelHoare-vr7mo
      @MichaelHoare-vr7mo 10 місяців тому

      Yes, Brookside's golden era was from late 80's to early 00's then of course it went downhill and was axed late in 2003.
